Chapter 1

1: 1

After we married, my wife moved her whole family into my mansion.

Not long ago her younger brother found himself a girlfriend and wanted to get married.

The girl's side demanded a house bought outright, in full.

And my mother-in-law actually proposed that I hand over my mansion as his wedding home.

I turned her down, gently. She flipped the table on the spot and dumped the entire meal over my head.

"Asking you for a wedding home is me showing you respect. You're the brother-in-law. Forget the house, you should be footing the bride gift too. Or did you think my daughter married you for free?"

My wife's face was full of contempt. Her silence said she agreed with every word.

"My mom had it hard raising the two of us. It's just one mansion. Don't be so petty about it!"

I wiped the mess off my face, said nothing more, and walked straight out.

A week later, her brother called in a moving company, threw out every piece of furniture in the house, and then gave me my orders.

"I'm getting married soon. This secondhand junk looks like bad luck."

"I ordered a whole set of high-end handmade custom furniture. It's arriving any minute. Remember to pay for it!"

I looked down at the secondhand-property sale contract I'd just signed and let out a calm little smile.

"No problem."

········

Just because I refused to transfer the mansion into my brother-in-law's name.

My mother-in-law dumped an entire table of food right in my face.

"All we're asking is that you give this mansion to your brother-in-law. We didn't even hold it against you that the place is secondhand, and you've got the nerve to refuse?"

"My daughter, that I raised through blood and sweat, married you. So what if I ask you to give her brother a house?"

I raised a hand, wiped the mess off my face, and looked at my wife, Vivien Cobb.

She yanked at me hard, annoyed.

"My mom had it hard raising the two of us. Just give the mansion to Miles! His wedding is the most important thing in our family!"

I shook Vivien's hand off and wiped my face again.

"Your mom raised the two of you, not me! Why should I give him a mansion?"

The place was on the older side, sure, but it sat near the heart of downtown, worth over ten million on the market.

Seeing me refuse, my mother-in-law flew into a rage and slapped me across the face, several times.

"Duke Vance, you ungrateful little snake. When I married my daughter off to you, I only took nine hundred ninety-nine thousand in bride gift. What's wrong with asking you for one mansion now? Call it me making up the difference on my daughter's bride gift!"

Her brother lounged there with one leg crossed over the other, looking me up and down like it was all a joke.

"Come on, you're being way too petty. Our family already handed my sister over to you. Giving me one mansion is the least you can do! Me being willing to take your secondhand place is me doing you a favor!"

I watched them stand there, the whole family so righteous about it, and laughed coldly inside.

They wanted to take a ten-million-dollar house off my hands, and have me feel like it was a gift they were bestowing on me?

I turned to Vivien.

"Vivien, is this what you think too?"

She shot me a look of pure disdain.

"Miles finally found himself a girlfriend, and all she's asking for is a house. Just give it to my brother! We're all one family. Why do you have to be so petty about everything!"

Hearing that answer, I didn't say another word. I turned and walked out.

A wife who wouldn't stand by her own home, who only wanted to bleed me dry to prop up the family she came from, there was no reason to keep her either.

Seeing me about to leave, my mother-in-law grabbed the water glass off the table and hurled it at me.

"We haven't even settled this and you think you can walk off?"

"You dare walk out today, and I promise you, tomorrow I'll have my daughter divorce you. Try me?"

My steps never faltered. I kept walking, straight ahead.

Out of the house, I went directly to the real estate agency at the entrance of the complex.

"I want to sell the mansion under my name."

"The price is negotiable, but the buyer has to take every piece of furniture inside as part of the deal!"

Once we'd worked through all the details, I made a trip to a law firm and had all my assets inventoried and notarized.

By the time I'd finished with everything and got home, it was already night.

Before I even reached the door, my mother-in-law's voice carried out, brimming with confidence.

"Don't you worry, son. That Vance boy won't last past tomorrow. He'll come crawling back and sign the house over to you like a good little dog."

Then she turned on Vivien, disgusted.

"Useless. Can't even keep a husband in line. You're married to him now, and your own brother's getting married. Him putting up a house as the brother-in-law, isn't that just how it should be?"

"I've already told all our relatives and friends. If we don't have that house in seven days, where does that leave my face?"

Miles kicked at Vivien too, sour about it.

"Right. You can't even manage one man. What good are you?"

"Her family's asking for a million in bride gift plus a hundred grams of gold. Tomorrow you have Duke transfer all of it to me!"

Vivien looked at Miles, a little uncertain.

"He's already giving you the house. Isn't a million-dollar bride gift on top of that a bit much?"

My mother-in-law's eyes went wide, the loose flesh on her face trembling with them.

"What's wrong with a million? Like they say, a brother-in-law is half a son. Even if we had Miles inherit every last bit of his property, that'd only be right!"

"Besides, once Miles is married, he can settle in and help out at Duke's company, share the load. Down the road, with Miles managing things for him, he won't have to work himself so hard!"

"He's got no father, no mother. The only ones he can lean on later are us. If he doesn't give the house to our family, who else is there?"

I stood at the door, my hands clenched tight.

They wanted my mansion and my company, and to drain me down to nothing on top of it. A fine little plan they'd worked out.

The next second, I pushed the door open and walked in.

"Funny. When did I get myself a grown son named Miles Cobb?"
