Chapter 10

Celeste adjusted the stack of files in her arms as she stepped into Damien Kane's office, her pulse quickening with each step. The office felt impossibly vast, the polished mahogany desk gleaming under the afternoon light, the walls lined with accolades and photos that screamed power. He was there, seated behind the desk, focused on the papers in front of him, his expression unreadable.

"Mr. Kane," she said softly, forcing a calm she didn't feel. "Here are the reports you requested."

Damien looked up slowly, and for a moment, the air between them shifted, heavy with unspoken tension. There was something familiar in the curve of her jaw, the set of her shoulders, the way she carried herself. Something that stirred a memory he had tried to suppress for years.

"Thank you," he said, his voice low and steady, yet with an edge that made her heart skip. He studied her for longer than necessary, as though searching for a clue he could not name. "Have a seat," he added, gesturing toward the chair across from him.

Celeste hesitated, aware of the magnetic pull radiating from him, and then slowly sat. Her hands rested neatly on the files, hiding the tremor she felt. "Is there anything else you need, sir?" she asked, forcing professionalism into every syllable.

Damien's gaze held hers, sharp, piercing, almost predatory. "You're efficient," he said finally. "But I sense... there's more to you than just being a secretary."

Celeste's heart thudded. How much did he know? Or was this intuition? He was Damien Kane, the richest man in the world, the one who could read people like open books, and yet... he hadn't uncovered her secret. Not yet.

"I... I do my best, sir," she replied evenly. "I like to be thorough."

"Thorough, yes," he murmured. "And confident. Organized. You're not like the others who've passed through here." His gaze softened slightly, then hardened again. "Why are you really here?"

Celeste's pulse quickened. She could feel the invisible thread pulling them together, the silent energy of a connection neither could name. She held his gaze, steadying herself. "I'm here to work," she said. "That is all."

He leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled, as though weighing her words and presence against some internal measure. "Work, yes," he said slowly. "But there's something in you... a spark. I've been searching for it, and now I see it here."

Celeste's stomach dropped. A spark. The same one that had existed the night they had first met-the night that had changed both of their lives.

A sudden knock at the door startled them. Damien waved the visitor in without looking. It was one of his assistants, holding a tablet. "Sir, your schedule for the next two hours-"

Damien glanced at the tablet, then back at Celeste. "Continue your work. I'll need updates." He tapped his fingers on the desk once, then added, almost as an afterthought, "And Ms. Hart..."

Celeste's eyes lifted.

"Be prepared for the unexpected," he said, voice low, enigmatic. "At Kane Holdings, nothing is ever simple."

She nodded, swallowing hard, aware that those words meant far more than the mundane schedule. They were a warning, a challenge, and a promise all at once.

As she left the office, she could feel his eyes on her back, tracing her every movement. She tried to tell herself it was nothing, just the attention of a powerful man watching an employee. Yet deep down, she knew it was far more. It was recognition. A recognition neither of them fully understood, but one that would unravel their carefully constructed barriers in ways neither could resist.

Outside the office, Celeste exhaled shakily, clutching the files to her chest. She had survived the first interaction. She had maintained her secret. But something had changed-something in the air, in the energy between them, in the way he had looked at her.

And she knew, without a doubt, that the world she had returned to was no longer just her workplace. It had become a battlefield for hearts, secrets, and a destiny that had waited five long years to ignite.

Meanwhile, Damien sank back into his chair, the faintest curve of a smile touching his lips. He couldn't explain it. He didn't know why, but something about this new secretary-the way she moved, the way she carried herself, the quiet confidence in her eyes-felt hauntingly familiar.

And he knew, with a certainty that both terrified and thrilled him, that she would not remain just another employee in his company.

Because the moment they had met again, fate had begun its work. And neither of them would ever be the same again.
