Chapter 3

AVERY'S POV

The rain pounded against the cheap window glass of my motel room as Roman set a black tablet on the laminate table.

"Look," he said.

I pulled my cardigan tighter around my ribs and leaned over the screen.

Roman brought up the uncompressed security file alongside the video Camille had played at the gala. The timestamps on the raw footage ran in unbroken white numerals against the dark hallway.

"Nathan's childhood friend showed everyone a forty-minute block," Roman said, tapping the screen to pause the timeline. "She claimed you entered suite 1408 at two-fourteen and didn't step out until after three. But look at the file length here. Seventeen minutes were spliced out."

He dragged the slider back to 02:31 AM.

On the unedited video, the suite door opened. A night-shift attendant hurried into the room carrying an ice bucket and a first-aid kit. Two minutes later, I appeared in the doorway, holding my phone high to catch the corridor signal while talking frantically on speaker.

"That's Dr. Ramos," I murmured, staring at my own image on the screen. "He was the on-call emergency doctor guiding me through your airway stabilization."

"The edited cut deleted the staff member entirely," Roman said, his voice flat and controlled. "It removed you standing in the hall with the doctor on video. They stitched two fourteen to three twenty-two together to make it look like a locked door and an empty room."

The knot in my stomach tightened into a cold, hard ache. "Someone sat at a computer and manufactured an affair frame by frame."

"It gets worse," Roman said. He leaned back against the edge of the dresser, his dark eyes fixed on me. "My anaphylaxis wasn't an accidental cross-contamination. The room service dessert that night contained concentrated almond extract. I've had a severe tree nut allergy registered with that hotel chain's VIP service for four years."

I looked up at him, shocked. "Someone poisoned you?"

"They gave me just enough to trigger a medical emergency and make sure you were called to the room." Roman didn't raise his voice. "I'm not telling you Nathan knew. I'm not telling you who gave the final order. You decide how deep you want to dig."

My hands shook as I pulled my phone from my pocket.

I didn't wait for him to offer more. I found the direct clinic number for Dr. Marcus Ramos and dialed. When the physician answered the late-night line, I asked for the archived record of our emergency video call from October 14.

Two minutes later, an encrypted PDF arrived in my inbox.

*Call Duration: 18 minutes, 42 seconds. Medical guidance provided for acute respiratory distress.*

Next, I opened the digital photo I had snapped of Camille's paper at the gala—the document she claimed was a certified forensic analysis of the sheets from Grandview suite 1408. I zoomed in on the accreditation seal at the bottom and entered the lab certification number into the public lab-accreditation directory.

The search bar blinked twice.

*Result: Invalid Identifier. Record does not exist.*

The entire forensic report was a sham. A piece of forged paper designed to look official under dim ballroom chandeliers.

Nathan hadn't even checked. He hadn't asked for a second opinion or looked at a single timestamp. He had simply seen an excuse to cut me loose, shoved me down a flight of stairs, and walked away.

"You can't stay here," Roman said, breaking the silence.

I blinked, looking up from my phone. "What?"

"The media already knows you were discharged from the hospital. A cheap roadside motel has zero security," he said, gesturing toward the thin wooden door facing the outdoor parking lot. "I have a condo in Midtown with private underground parking and twenty-four-hour private security. I already had the access codes reset for you. Pack your things."

Something sharp and ugly flared in my chest.

Three years of marriage came rushing back—Nathan telling me which dinners to attend, Nathan deciding what dress suited the Reed family image, Nathan telling me what was best for my own life while treating me like property.

"Excuse me?" I stood up from the vinyl chair, my voice rising. "You already had the codes reset?"

Roman frowned slightly. "Avery, it's a security precaution."

"Is this how it works now?" I stepped toward him, anger burning through the dull ache in my lower body. "Nathan decides I'm a liar and kicks me onto the street, so you step in and decide where I live, who I see, and what I'm allowed to do? Do you think because you pulled me off the floor, you get to manage my life?"

The air in the small room went taut.

I braced myself for what always came next with Nathan—the sharp grab on my wrist, the towering stance, the locked door, the quiet humiliation meant to put me back in my place.

Roman didn't step forward.

He didn't raise his hands, and he didn't raise his voice. Instead, he took two full steps back toward the entryway.

He reached out, turned the deadbolt, and pulled the motel door wide open into the rainy night.

Cold air rushed into the heated room, carrying the scent of wet asphalt and pine.

"You can leave," Roman said quietly, his voice level. "You never need permission from me."

I stood frozen in the center of the room, staring at the open door.

Nobody was blocking my path. Nobody had grabbed my arm. The hallway was completely clear, and the choice was entirely mine. For three years, every disagreement in my marriage had ended in cornering and control. This was the first time a man had simply opened the exit and let me decide.

My breathing gradually slowed. The defensive heat in my blood began to cool, leaving behind an exhaustion that settled deep into my bones.

"I'm sorry," I whispered, looking down at the carpet. "I just... I can't be trapped again."

"I know," Roman said, resting his hand against the open doorframe. "You're not trapped."

"One night," I said. "Guest room only."

Roman gave a single nod. "Your choice."

Before I could say anything else, Roman's phone vibrated against the table.

He picked it up, unlocked the screen, and scrolled through a new file sent by his security lead. A grim shadow crossed his face.

"My team traced the financial trail for the surveillance footage," Roman said, looking up at me. "The freelance videographer who cut the hotel tape was paid through an offshore account. The money originated from a public relations sub-account managed by the Reed Family Office."

My heart went cold. "Nathan's family office?"

"Only three people have authorization codes for that discretionary fund," Roman said. "Nathan, his mother, and Camille."

Before the weight of that revelation could fully sink in, my own phone buzzed violently in my palm.

A push notification from the St. Jude Prenatal Diagnostics portal lit up the screen:

*URGENT: Genetic Screening and Paternal Confirmation Report Complete. Automated copy dispatched to all registered primary contacts.*

My breath caught in my throat.

The comprehensive genetic panel Nathan and I took three days before the gala—the one that could now prove the truth he had refused to believe—had just finished processing in the central laboratory system.

The portal said an automated copy had been dispatched to every registered primary contact. Nathan was one of them. Somewhere across the city, the same result would be waiting in his inbox:

*Fetal Paternal Genetic Confirmation: Match Confirmed 99.9%.*
