Chapter 1

Eleven hours. That's how long I held Margaret Alexander's heart in my hands.

When I finally stepped out of Manhattan Presbyterian, the sky was turning gray-pink over the city. My scrubs were stiff with her blood. My legs ached. My fingers still felt the rhythm of the sutures.

I pulled out my phone and called my husband.

It rang. And rang. Then Hayes's recorded voice, smooth and bored. *Leave a message.*

I called again. Voicemail.

A third time. Voicemail.

So I typed it out. *Your mother is stable. Surgery was successful.*

I watched the screen. Nothing. No dots. No reply. Just my own words sitting there in a little blue bubble, alone.

Five years of marriage, and I still checked. I hated that I still checked.

A garbage truck groaned down the avenue. Steam rose from a grate. The city was waking up, and nobody in it was waiting for me.

Then a black town car pulled up across the street, in front of The Plaza.

I knew the car before I knew the man. The back door opened. Hayes Alexander stepped out. Tall, dark suit, no tie. Heir to the whole Alexander empire. He turned and held out his hand.

Natasha Cox took it.

His arm slid around her waist. She said something, and he laughed. Really laughed, head tipped back. I hadn't heard that sound in years. Maybe ever.

He opened the hotel door for her. He touched the small of her back as she walked through.

On her wrist, a thin gold bracelet caught the early light. I knew that bracelet. He'd given it to her before he married me. She wore it the night we met at a charity gala, and she'd made sure I saw it.

I watched until the doors swung shut behind them.

Then I turned around and walked back inside to check his mother's vitals.

My hands didn't shake. I'd had five years of practice.

---

The nausea didn't stop.

I blamed the long shifts. The cold coffee I never finished. The nights on the on-call cot. But after a week, a colleague pushed me into an exam room and ordered a blood test.

The result came back positive.

I sat on the paper-covered table for a long time. The fluorescent light buzzed above me. Somewhere down the hall, a monitor beeped.

I waited to feel happy. I didn't.

What I felt was clear. Cold and clear, like water.

I had been putting off a decision for years. Now someone had handed me a reason.

---

Sunday dinner at Dario's was not optional. It never had been.

Dario Vargas took me in when I was seven, the year my parents died. He raised me for ten years. He taught me to ride a bike. He taught me chess. He sat by my bed the winter I had pneumonia. He paid for medical school.

When he asked me to marry Hayes, I said yes. How could I say no to the man who saved my life?

"Mi hija." He kissed my cheek at the door. His hand settled on my shoulder, warm and heavy. "You look tired."

"Long week."

"Is Hayes treating you well?"

I smiled. "Of course."

His eyes held mine a second too long. "Good. That marriage matters, sweetheart. More than you know."

Halfway through dinner, I needed a pen to write down a wine he liked. I slipped into his study.

The top drawer of his desk wasn't locked.

The pen was there. So was a folder. I almost closed it. Then I saw the word *Alexander*.

Shell company filings. Share purchases in Alexander Corp, small and quiet, spread across names I'd never heard. Letters to board members. And a flash drive, labeled with a date from the month of my wedding.

I plugged it into his computer with numb fingers. Kept the volume low.

Men's voices. Laughing. Ice in glasses.

"The asset's in place."

"She's clean? No complications?"

"The girl's loyal. Dario raised her for this. Best inside position we'll ever get."

Then Dario's voice. Calm. Fond. "She'll do what I ask. She always has."

The room tilted.

The asset. The placement. The inside position.

Ten years of bedtime stories. Ten years of gratitude. It came apart in less than a minute.

I photographed every page. I copied the file. I put everything back exactly where it was, the folder edge lined up with the drawer's seam the way I'd found it.

Then I walked back to the table and sat down.

"Find it?" Dario asked.

I held up the pen. "Right where you keep everything."

He laughed and poured me more wine. I ate his food. I smiled at his jokes. I gave him nothing.

He taught me that, too.

---

The penthouse was dark when I got home. Hayes was at a client dinner. He hadn't mentioned it. He never did.

I sat at the kitchen table and laid it all out. The printed photos of Dario's files. The prenatal pamphlet from the clinic, a smiling woman on the cover.

I looked at them side by side until midnight.

Two decisions. That was all.

I would leave this marriage.

And I would raise this child without either of them.

---

Hayes came into the kitchen at seven, buttoning his cuffs. He didn't look at me. He reached for the coffee.

"Your mother's asking for you," I said. "She's awake now."

"I'll stop by."

"You didn't answer my calls."

"I was busy."

I thought of the bracelet. The door he held open. "I know."

He glanced at his watch.

"Hayes. This arrangement has run its course. I'm filing for divorce."

He went still. Then he stared at me like I'd spoken another language.

And he laughed.

Not cruelly. Worse. He laughed like I'd said something silly.

"Elianna. You just did an eleven-hour surgery. You're being dramatic."

"I'm being clear."

"You need sleep." He picked up his phone and his keys. "We'll talk when you're yourself again."

He walked out. He didn't ask why.

The elevator chimed. The doors closed.

I stood alone in the kitchen, one hand flat against my stomach.

*When you're yourself again.*

He had no idea who that was.

Neither did Dario.

But they were both about to find out.
