Chapter 2

Ava's POV

The stone steps outside the Grand Meridian were freezing, but I sat down on them anyway.

The wind off the bay cut straight through my wet dress. The silk had gone stiff and sticky where the champagne was drying, and every gust made me shiver harder. I wrapped my arms around my knees and pulled out my phone, mostly so I'd have something to hold.

Nicole's video was already the first thing on my feed.

She'd trimmed it. Her trembling voice, my raised dress, the scar, Lucas shoving me into the table. Except she'd cut it so the shove came after I lunged toward the stage, which made it look like he was protecting her.

The caption read: *I never wanted anyone to see this. I just want peace.*

Forty thousand views. The comments kept loading.

*Imagine faking an organ donation to marry rich.*

*That scar could be from anything lol.*

*Girl needs therapy, not a husband.*

I scrolled down, and my stomach dropped.

Someone had posted a photo in the replies. It was a page from my medical file. My post-op notes from St. Catherine's, my creatinine levels, the name of my surgeon, and in the top corner, my old cell number. The same number I still used.

The caption under it said: *Here's her "proof." Notice how she never shows the full record.*

I zoomed in. There was a faint coffee ring on the bottom edge of the page.

I remembered that ring. Nicole had spilled a latte on my folder five years ago, the week after my surgery. She'd shown up at the hospital with flowers for Lucas and offered to help me sort through the insurance bills, because I could barely sit up without my incision pulling. She'd made copies of everything for me. She'd been so sweet about it.

She'd kept them.

I switched to my email without really deciding to and searched for one old message. It was still there. *Offer of Employment, Senior Experience Designer, London.* I'd read it maybe a hundred times before I declined.

That spring, I'd taped a renal diet plan to Lucas's fridge and cooked low-sodium dinners every night, measuring potassium like it was a second job. He used to sit at the counter with a blanket around his shoulders and watch me chop vegetables.

One night, he'd pulled me close and kissed my forehead.

"One day, Ava, you'll never have to carry everything alone again."

I closed the email.

My phone buzzed. A new message at the top of my inbox, from Bayshore Hotels.

*Dear Ms. Morgan,*

*In light of the ongoing public controversy, Bayshore Hotels has decided to terminate the guest experience design agreement effective immediately. We believe continued association may affect our brand partnerships...*

I read it twice. Bayshore was my biggest client. Three properties, eight months of work, and a launch in six weeks. Further down, the payment schedule had a gray line through every remaining installment.

I called Dana Kowalski, my account manager. She picked up on the fourth ring.

"Ava." She sounded tired. "I figured you'd call."

"Dana, it's midnight. How did this go through so fast?"

"Corporate saw the video. Somebody tagged us because your name's on our spring campaign."

"That video is edited. The medical record is mine. I'm the donor."

"I believe you. Honestly, I do." She paused. "But headquarters doesn't want a hotel brand anywhere near an organ donation scandal. They don't care who's right. They care that it's trending."

"So eight months of work just disappears."

"I'm sorry. I pushed back. It wasn't my call."

She hung up first. I sat there with the phone against my ear, listening to nothing.

The screen lit up again. Lucas.

*Delete everything you said about Nicole tonight. Post a public apology.*

A second text came right after.

*Apologize to Nicole, and I'll consider letting you come home.*

Consider. Like I was a dog he might let back inside.

I scrolled up through our messages. The last six months went by under my thumb. *Board meeting ran late, rain check?* *Funding round, can't do dinner.* *Nicole's having a rough night, I need to go.* And under every one, my reply.

*Sorry, I know you're stressed.*

*No worries, I'm sorry I pushed.*

*Sorry, babe. Take care of her.*

I'd apologized for every date he canceled. I'd apologized for being disappointed.

Tonight, his security team had marched me out of a ballroom in front of two hundred people. My medical file was public. My income was gone.

He hadn't asked if I'd gotten home safely.

I didn't answer him. I screenshotted Nicole's video, the comment with my record, the caption, the view count, and saved all of it to a folder. Then I stood up.

My legs felt hollow. I hadn't eaten since lunch, too nervous about the anniversary slideshow to touch the appetizers. I walked away from the hotel lights toward the waterfront path, because I couldn't stand the idea of anyone from the party seeing me sitting out front.

Halfway down the boardwalk, the ground tilted.

I grabbed the metal railing. It was slick and so cold it hurt. The wind whipped my hair into my face and made my eyes water, or maybe I was already crying. I honestly couldn't tell anymore.

"Do you need help?"

The voice was low and calm. I turned around.

A man sat a few feet away in a dark gray wheelchair. He wore a worn cable-knit sweater, frayed at one cuff, and had a paperback lying open on his knee. A canvas grocery bag hung from one armrest, a baguette poking out of the top.

"I'm fine," I said.

"You're holding that railing like it's the only thing keeping you up."

I didn't let go of it.

He didn't ask what happened. He didn't look at my ruined dress or the smeared mascara I knew had to be all over my face. He just reached into the bag, pulled out a bottle of water with the seal still on, and held it out.

"There's a bench right there," he said, nodding to my left. "It's a little damp, but it beats the ground."

I took the bottle. My hands were shaking too much to twist the cap. He watched me try once, then held out his hand. I gave it back. He cracked the seal and returned it without a word.

I sat down. The wet wood soaked through the back of my dress, and I didn't care.

"You don't have to tell me what happened," he said. "But you shouldn't be out here freezing."

I drank half the water at once. It was the first thing all night that didn't hurt.

"I'm Elliott," he said. "I'm staying at a place just up the beach while I recover from something." He pointed behind him, to a low house with warm yellow windows sitting above the dunes. "There's a guest suite with its own entrance. If you don't want to go back to that hotel, you could warm up there for a while."

I stared at him. A stranger. A man I'd known for three minutes.

"You don't have to decide right now," Elliott said. "I'm going to sit here and finish my chapter. If you want to come, come. If you don't, I'll point you toward a cab."

He picked up the book and actually started reading.

I looked back at the Grand Meridian. Somewhere inside, Lucas was dancing with Nicole.

"Okay," I said. "Just to warm up."

The house smelled like cedar and salt. Elliott rolled across the hardwood floor and into the open kitchen like he'd done it a thousand times, pulled a pot from a low shelf, and set it on the stove. Ten minutes later, he slid a bowl of tomato soup across the wooden table toward me.

I wrapped both hands around it. The heat stung my frozen fingers.

My phone rang. Lucas.

I picked up.

"Nicole cried all night because of you." No hello. No *where are you*. "You humiliated her in front of everyone. Be at her place tomorrow at ten and apologize."

Steam curled up from the soup in front of me.

A year ago, I would have explained. I would have told him about the leaked file, about Bayshore, about sitting alone on the stone steps. I would have begged him to understand.

I hung up instead.

Then I opened my settings, found *Share My Location with Lucas*, and turned it off. I set the phone face down on the table.

Across from me, Elliott didn't ask a single question. He held out a folded towel, dry and soft, and waited until I took it.

"Whatever he said," he told me quietly, "you don't have to answer him tonight."
