Chapter 1

ELENA

Sebastian Grayson broke his vows on the eve of our tenth wedding anniversary.

It was something even I didn’t expect.

Instead of celebrating with me, his wife, he chose to be seen at a charity gala with his executive assistant, Lila Monroe.

Cameras captured them under the glittering chandeliers, sharing a moment that set the gossip columns ablaze.

When he returned that night, he handed me a rare sapphire necklace—the "Eternal Loyalty," an artifact valued in both history and price.

For a fleeting moment, I thought the gesture might mean something, a chance to rekindle what we'd lost.

But the next morning, I saw her. Lila, stepping out of his sleek Aston Martin, adorned with a diamond choker that outshone mine in both brilliance and significance.

I played my role. The poised wife of the billionaire. I greeted his colleagues, smiled for the cameras, and drowned my bitterness in champagne. Yet their arrogance was impossible to ignore.

They whispered, thinking I couldn’t hear, laughed, thinking I wouldn’t notice.

Sebastian thought he could make amends in his usual way. Jewelry, designer gowns, lavish vacations.

But every gift was a hollow apology, a gilded reminder of his lies. My closet became a mausoleum of his betrayal.

But I wasn’t the naive girl he'd once charmed. I had my own plans.

That night, I presented him with a custom-made crystal decanter etched with intricate designs, claiming it was for his whiskey collection.

"A token of my gratitude," I had said, betraying no emotion. He accepted it with a smirk, oblivious to the fact that this was my final act of pretense.

The following morning, before the city awakened, I was gone. The only thing I left behind was a single handwritten note on his pristine marble bedside table:

"May your wealth comfort you, as I no longer will."

The clerk behind the counter at the private jet terminal raised an eyebrow as she scanned my documents.

“Mrs. Elena Grayson, you’re aware that severing your ties with the Grayson name will remove you from all records, including financial?”

I nodded. “That’s the idea.”

Her gaze lingered, as if searching for hesitation. “You’ll have no claim to his fortune, his empire, or—”

“None of it matters,” I interrupted.

She sighed, stamping the documents with finality. “Your flight departs in thirty minutes. Once you board, your life as Mrs. Grayson is over.”

I stepped onto the tarmac, the roar of the jet engines mingling with the pounding of my heart. In my bag was a one-way ticket to Europe, far from the towering Grayson Enterprises building that loomed over New York.

As the plane ascended, I glimpsed the Manhattan skyline disappearing below.

My heart feels lighter now, but the wounds Sebastian had inflicted were far from healed.

Hours later, as I sat in a Parisian café, sipping espresso, my eyes caught a news broadcast on the television above the bar.

Sebastian’s face filled the screen, his signature smirk as polished as ever. Asshiole.

“Breaking news: Billionaire Sebastian Grayson has gifted his wife, Elena, the world’s rarest sapphire necklace, valued at over fifty million dollars, as a token of their enduring love. When asked about his gesture, Grayson said, ‘Elena has always been my guiding light.’”

Bullshit.

Gasps erupted from nearby patrons, their admiration palpable. Of course, none of them would have actually known what it’s like to be me.

Pathetic, foolish me.

“Did you hear that?” one woman exclaimed. “Elena Grayson is so lucky! Their love is like a fairy tale!”

“Right? The way he adores her—he’s perfect!”

Their words were a cruel reminder of the lies I once believed.

Sebastian Grayson, the man who had wooed me relentlessly, was far from perfect.

I still remember the early days when he pursued me—a struggling artist trying to make a name for herself in a city that chewed people up and spat them out.

“Marry me,” he had whispered one night, his voice full of promise as we stood on the rooftop of his penthouse.

“Let me take care of you, Elena. I’ll give you the world.”

Against my better judgment, I said yes.

Oh, I said yes.

Foolish, Elena. Extremely foolish.

Our wedding was a spectacle—he spared no expense.

In front of New York’s elite, Sebastian proclaimed his devotion to me. “Elena, you are my everything. From this day forward, nothing will come before you.”

For a time, he kept his promises. He showered me with affection and gifts, made me believe I was the center of his world.

But promises, like champagne bubbles, eventually burst.
