Chapter 2

"Sophie!"

I took a deep breath, trying to make my tone sound less cold.

"We're in Bali, by the time you book a flight, the police will have saved him."

"If you're really worried, we can cancel our honeymoon and I'll go back to the hospital with you tomorrow."

This was the most reasonable suggestion I could think of and the biggest compromise I could make.

But Sophie released my hand, her brows furrowing in displeasure.

"The wedding can be held anytime, but if I don't go back, Lucas will die."

I laughed at myself inwardly.

How ridiculous.

A person faking illness was more important than our wedding.

A year ago, when our parents met, Lucas happened to have an episode.

He snatched the scissors from the nurse and held them to his neck, jumping around the ward.

The doctors were at a loss and had to obey him and call Sophie back.

Although her parents tried their best to explain and apologize that time, and my parents didn't take it to heart, I became suspicious.

Ever since he became Sophie's patient, he would use various strange reasons to trick the soft-hearted doctor back to the hospital during every date.

It was so coincidental that I hired a private detective and found out his depression diagnosis was fake.

I was furious and confronted Lucas with the evidence.

Sophie was visibly shaken and was about to stop being his attending doctor when Lucas slit his wrist.

He's in the hospital, so naturally he won't die.

And conveniently got himself a real psychiatric report.

Lucas's extreme actions scared Sophie. She seemed to forget he had faked depression and began to care for him with great compassion.

Catching a glimpse of Lucas's smug smile, I reasonably suspected he deliberately chose wrong answers during the tests.

I tried to scold him but was coldly thrown out of the hospital by Sophie.

That night, she came home and sincerely apologized, promising me that she only saw him as a patient and wouldn't develop any feelings.

I believed her and tolerated it.

But today, Sophie's reaction was a slap in my face.

Lucas Kane wanting to jump off the building, the police would save him. Did it really need a doctor to cancel her wedding and fly back for eight hours to comfort him?

"Jackie, please understand, he's my first patient. I can't just sit back and do nothing."

Sophie dropped a righteous line and turned to leave.

I barely caught hold of her wedding dress.

"Let's just finish the wedding. It only takes five minutes, and then we're done."

My heart pounding like a drum, I pleaded in a trembling voice.

"Jackie, that's enough!"

Sophie's face darkened, she pried my hand away, each word stabbing into my heart.

"Even a young master's tantrum has its limits."

"You only lost a wedding, but Lucas might lose his life..."

After saying this, she gave me a disappointed look, swiftly took off her cumbersome wedding dress, changed into casual clothes, and rushed to the airport.

The guests were in an uproar, whispering among themselves, their eyes full of pity for me.

I stood there, dazed, like a clown being mocked.

Sophie's parents chased after her, confused.

My father, with a stern face, ordered his assistant to block the news.

My mother, heartbroken, came to support me, hesitating to speak.

The bouquet fell to the ground, and I looked down at the sparkling diamonds on the flowers.

These were sewn on by me, stitch by stitch, full of joy, through several sleepless nights.

My vision blurred as I looked up at the sky.

Damn it, why is there dust in Bali?
