Chapter 2

Six years later.

Elara Vance sat in a glass-walled conference room, the Manhattan skyline a cold, glittering backdrop behind her.

She wore a tailored gray suit, her dark hair pulled back in a severe chignon. Her face, a canvas of delicate makeup, was beautiful but unnervingly still. Only the occasional flicker of ice in her eyes betrayed the inferno she had walked through. Multiple, agonizing surgeries had given her a new face, one that belonged to a stranger.

Across the polished mahogany table sat the Kensington family's chief legal counsel, a man with a face like a clenched fist. He pushed a thick document toward her.

"Ms. Vance. This is your marital agreement with Mr. Caspian Kensington. Please review it carefully."

Elara picked up the file. Her eyes scanned the pages, her expression unchanging. The terms were insulting. Humiliating.

She was to be a wife in name only.

No rights to the Kensington Group.

No inheritance.

A fixed monthly allowance.

Her sole duty was to play the part of "Mrs. Kensington" until Caspian died or the family decided otherwise.

The lawyer watched her, a hint of contempt in his gaze. "The agreement is to stabilize company shares. Mr. Arthur Kensington believes the appearance of a stable marriage for his grandson will placate the board."

Elara didn't react. It was as if he were discussing the weather.

She flipped to the final page, took the offered pen, and signed her name. The signature was calm, steady, and sharp.

The lawyer's eyes widened slightly. He had expected hesitation, perhaps tears. Not this cold efficiency.

Elara pushed the document back across the table. "When do I see my 'husband'?"

"Immediately," the lawyer said, gathering the papers. "A simple civil ceremony, and then you will be moved into the Kensington Estate."

The "simple civil ceremony" was a sterile, hollow affair held in a private hall, utterly devoid of warmth or celebration. The groom, predictably, was absent—confined to a life-support bed. Elara stood alone at the altar, her expression an impenetrable mask of serene grace.

Among the sparse attendees stood Julian Kensington, Caspian's nephew. As he watched the solitary bride, a strange, unsettling jolt of familiarity struck him.

He squinted, but the face was entirely unknown—flawless, striking, and completely foreign. The agonizing surgeries had perfectly erased the woman he once knew, replacing her with this breathtaking stranger.

Julian couldn't tear his eyes away. He was captivated by her icy, ethereal beauty, a bitter twinge of envy gnawing at his chest. *How does a brain-dead vegetable get to marry a woman like that?* he thought, his gaze lingering on her elegant silhouette with undisguised covetousness.

When the brief ceremony concluded, Elara's gaze swept across the room and locked onto Julian. For a fleeting second, her serene mask fractured. A raw, unadulterated hatred flared in her eyes—a venomous inferno she could barely conceal.

The man who had orchestrated her ruin was standing mere feet away, looking at her with oblivious, greedy eyes. Her nails dug ruthlessly into her palms, the sharp pain grounding her.

*Not yet,* she commanded herself, forcing the raging fire back beneath the ice. *Everything is for the revenge.* It took a long, agonizing moment for her to completely suppress the turbulent storm inside her. Once her icy composure was fully restored, she turned on her heel, her posture rigid and regal, and walked out.

Shortly after, Elara was in the back of a black Rolls-Royce, gliding silently toward the family's Long Island estate. The city blurred past her window. Her eyes were deep, unreadable pools.

She took out a burner phone and dialed number.

"Luna, it's me."

A bright, energetic voice answered, "Elara! You did it? You're really marrying the vegetable?"

"I did. How are the children?"

"Don't worry," Luna said. "Felix and Leo are hacking into something they shouldn't be, Jasper is trying to flambé a croissant, and Celeste is drawing pictures of everyone's doom. They're perfect."

A ghost of a smile touched Elara's lips, the first crack in her icy facade. "Take care of them for me. When the time is right, I'll come for them."

She ended the call, and the ice sealed over once more.

Julian. Lila. I'm back.

The car passed through enormous wrought-iron gates, entering the sprawling grounds of the Kensington Estate. The main house was a magnificent Norman-style castle, imposing and somber against the setting sun.

A butler, an older man with sharp eyes and a polite but rigid posture, was waiting at the entrance.

"Ms. Vance. Welcome to the Kensington Estate. Or should I say, Mrs. Kensington." His tone was perfectly neutral.

"Elara is fine," she said, stepping out of the car.

The butler, who introduced himself as Finch, led her through a grand hall lined with portraits of Kensington ancestors. Her eyes snagged for a second on a painting of a young man with Caspian's ice-blue eyes but a darker, more sullen expression.

Finch noticed her gaze but said nothing. He led her up a sweeping staircase to the second floor.

"This will be your room," he said, opening a door. "It is adjacent to Mr. Caspian's."

The room was vast and opulent but felt as personal as a five-star hotel suite.

"Mr. Caspian's room is monitored by a 24-hour medical team," Finch stated, his tone a clear warning. "No one is permitted to enter without Mr. Arthur Kensington's express permission."

"I understand."

After Finch left, Elara walked to the floor-to-ceiling window and looked out at the manicured gardens below.

Six years ago, she had crawled out of hell. She had sworn to make them pay.

Marrying Caspian was the first step.

She touched her cheek, feeling the slight, residual stiffness of the skin grafts beneath her makeup. In the reflection on the dark glass, a stranger stared back.

A cold smile finally curved her lips.
