Chapter 3

Marcus texted that he’d be home early with “just a quick signature thing.” I left the processor on and waited in the living room with a glass of water on the coffee table. Sophie arrived first, already smiling like she’d organized the whole afternoon. She set a neat folder beside the glass and adjusted the throw pillows.

The doorbell rang. Marcus answered it and ushered in a man in a gray suit carrying a slim briefcase. “Elena, this is our attorney. We’re updating the marital trust and the company authorization paperwork. Nothing dramatic. Just keeping everything current.”

The lawyer nodded politely and sat across from me. Sophie took the spot on the arm of my chair, close enough that her sleeve brushed mine.

“I’ll walk through the key sections,” the lawyer said. His voice came through clean. “The revised trust and the voting authorization expand Mr. Hale’s authority in the event Mrs. Hale is medically unable to participate in decisions. Specifically, the twenty percent voting block and related proxies shift to him under those conditions, with broader discretionary language than the previous instruments.”

Sophie’s hands moved in my peripheral vision.

*Standard marital updates. Ordinary couple authorization so things stay simple if anyone gets sick.*

I kept my face neutral and watched both versions land side by side. The real sentence and the stripped one. My pulse stayed steady only because I forced it.

I remembered the papers I’d signed years ago, right after the first surgery. A limited, revocable proxy for routine household and medical logistics. Nothing more. And the twenty percent my father left me had never been Marcus’s to touch. It sat in my name alone. I had never transferred it.

The lawyer opened the folder and slid the signature pages toward me. “We’ll need your signature here, Mrs. Hale, on the principal line for each document. Then a witness can initial.”

Sophie leaned in, ready to guide my hand the way she used to when the processor failed. Marcus stood behind the couch, hands loose at his sides, watching.

I picked up the pen. I signed my name carefully—in the witness line.

The lawyer frowned and leaned forward. “That’s the witness block. Your signature belongs on the principal line above it.”

I looked up, slow. “Oh.”

Sophie reached for the page. “I can fix the placement—”

I knocked the water glass with the side of my hand. It tipped hard. Water flooded the open folder, soaking every signature page, every neat paragraph, every authorization clause. Ink bled into gray clouds. The paper curled.

Sophie sucked in a breath and grabbed for napkins, blotting too late. “Elena—”

I set the pen down and signed the air once, then formed the words clearly so both of them could see.

*I didn’t hear where he told me to sign.*

The lawyer gathered the ruined pages with tight, professional calm. “We’ll need fresh copies. I can have them prepared and brought back tomorrow morning.”

Marcus’s jaw flexed once. He walked the lawyer to the door, low voices exchanging logistics. Sophie kept blotting the table even after the damage was done, her shoulders rigid.

When the front door clicked shut, Marcus came back into the living room. He looked at the wet mess, then at Sophie, and spoke out loud like I wasn’t there.

“If she keeps recovering this well, she’ll want to come back into the company. We can’t leave openings.”

I stayed facing the ruined papers. I didn’t turn.

Sophie answered him in a rush. “Tomorrow’s fine. We’ll get clean versions and finish it cleanly.”

I picked up my phone, opened the calendar invite the lawyer had just sent, and changed the note in the shared thread so both of them would see it.

Reschedule. After I review every original document in full.

I hit send. Their phones buzzed almost in unison.

Marcus went still. For the first time I could remember, the paperwork he wanted locked down that same day slipped out of his reach. Sophie stared at her screen like the words might rearrange themselves if she waited long enough.

I stood, collected the soaked folder myself, and carried it to the kitchen trash. The processor caught every sound behind me—Marcus’s short exhale, Sophie’s quiet “we’ll handle it”—but I didn’t look back.

The originals would come to me first now. Unfiltered.
