Chapter 1

Hours after my cochlear implant was activated, I came home early because I wanted one thing: to hear my husband say I love you with his own voice.

Instead, I heard my best friend laugh upstairs.

“She texted me. She won't be back until tomorrow.”

Marcus answered, “Good. Come here.”

Sophie was sitting on my bed in his shirt when I reached the doorway.

Then she asked if I really believed Marcus was the perfect husband everyone praised.

“I am, as far as she knows,” he said.

He smiled before adding, “She's easier to manage when she can't hear us.”

I went downstairs, switched my processor off, and slammed the front door.

Minutes later, Sophie appeared fully dressed and signed that I was home early.

Marcus hugged me and signed that he had missed me.

I smiled and signed it back.

Then Sophie reached for my phone to manage my appointments like always.

I pulled it away, opened my medical account, and removed her access.

Her phone buzzed.

For the first time, I watched my best friend realize the silent version of me had just said no.

***

The activation room smelled like antiseptic and warm plastic. I sat perfectly still while the audiologist adjusted the external processor behind my ear, her fingers light and practiced.

“Okay, Elena. I’m going to switch it on now. Tell me what you hear.”

Sound hit me in a clean, sharp wave. Not the muffled underwater blur I had lived with for years. Not the old tinny approximation. This was real. Her voice landed with edges and warmth and exact pitch.

I froze.

“I can hear you,” I said. My own voice startled me. It sounded lower than I remembered, a little rough. “Actually hear you.”

She smiled. “Good. That’s the upgrade doing its job. We’ll fine-tune over the next few days, but the baseline is strong. How does it feel?”

I laughed once, short and shaky. “Loud. Clear. Like someone finally took the cotton out of my head.”

She went over the temporary settings, the care instructions, the follow-up schedule. I nodded through all of it, already half somewhere else. The second she cleared me to leave, I was out the door and into the parking garage, heart hammering for a reason that had nothing to do with medical recovery.

Marcus.

I wanted to hear him say it. Not signed. Not mouthed carefully so I could read his lips. Spoken out loud, in his real voice, the three words I had only ever imagined.

I love you.

He had told a whole charity dinner once that he’d simply “learned another language to love her.” The room had melted. Cameras loved it. I had smiled beside him and pretended the phrasing didn’t sting. Today I could finally catch him off guard and make him say the real thing without translation.

I drove home early, windows down, cataloging every new sound—the engine, the turn signal click, traffic noise that used to be distant thunder. My hands stayed tight on the wheel the whole way.

Our house was quiet when I pulled into the driveway. Marcus’s car sat in its usual spot. Sophie’s was parked behind it, which wasn’t unusual; she spent half her time here “helping.” I let myself in through the side door, careful with the latch, already smiling at the thought of surprising him.

I made it three steps into the hallway before the voices reached me.

Sophie’s, light and easy. “I’ll just tell her I flew back tomorrow. She’ll never know the difference.”

Then Marcus, lower, amused. “She’s easier to manage when she can’t hear us.”

I stopped cold.

Their bedroom door stood half open. I could see the edge of our bed. Sophie sat cross-legged on the mattress in one of Marcus’s white shirts, the sleeves rolled, the hem barely covering her thighs. Her hair was loose. She looked comfortable. At home.

Marcus stood near the dresser, pulling a T-shirt over his head, still smiling like he’d told a private joke.

The new clarity of sound made every word land clean and undeniable. No guesswork. No hoping I’d misread lips.

I didn’t walk in.

I turned around, went downstairs, and shut the processor off with one hard press. The world dropped back into thick, familiar silence. Then I slammed the front door hard enough that the glass rattled.

Footsteps hurried above me. By the time I reached the kitchen, they were already coming down the stairs, both fully dressed, Sophie in jeans now, Marcus barefoot and composed.

He signed immediately, face open and warm. Missed you. You’re early. How did it go?

Sophie stepped closer, already reaching for my phone on the counter like she always did. “I’ve got your follow-up emails and the pharmacy refill. Let me just—”

I pulled the phone out of her reach.

She blinked. “Elena?”

I unlocked it, opened the medical portal, and navigated straight to the shared access settings. Sophie’s name sat there with full permissions—appointments, records, billing, messages. I had given her that access years ago because it was easier. Because Marcus said it helped. Because I couldn’t always catch every detail when the processor cut out or the battery died.

I revoked every permission.

The screen flashed a confirmation. A second later Sophie’s phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out. The alert glowed on her lock screen: Access removed. Account permissions updated.

Her smile locked in place, then cracked at the edges.

Marcus’s hands stilled mid-sign. He looked from the phone to my face, reading something he hadn’t expected.

I set my phone face down on the counter and met his eyes. The silence in my head was absolute again, but I didn’t need sound for this. The shift had already happened.
