Revenge: Protect One's Life and Love
Chapter 2
I first checked my bank account and confirmed that I had never received any transfers to my card.
As for the wedding photos and videos, they could be deepfakes.
Now that the initiative was in the hands of the other party, I had no idea what precautions to take.
I could only start with the marriage certificate.
It was simple to prove that I was not married. I just needed to go to the Office of Vital Records to get an unmarried certificate.
I decided to get this unmarried certificate first.
When I just went downstairs, I happened to meet my neighbor, Mrs. Catherine Chase, who was about to go upstairs.
At the sight of her, the lingering fear from my previous life invaded my mind, draining all the color from my face.
"Hey, Alicia, why do you look so pale? Haha, you can't be so excited just because your boyfriend is coming, can you?" Catherine greeted me with a smile, her face full of concern.
If I hadn't suffered so much abuse from her in my previous life, how could I have known that this elder who seemed to care about me so much was the nastiest devil in the world?
"I, I'm fine. My boyfriend has something urgent to do and can't come," I hurriedly replied.
"He's not coming?"
Catherine was stunned for a moment with a flicker of surprise in her eyes. She muttered to herself, "He's not coming? Well, the day of the ceremony in our village is coming soon. Never mind. Anyway, it's not important whether he comes or not."
If I had heard her say such weird words in my previous life, I probably wouldn't have taken it to heart.
After all, she was mysterious and liked to say vague words all the time.
But in this life, when I heard what she just said, I only felt cold all over.
I understood that her words were directed at me.
I didn't know what exactly the ceremony held in her village was.
However, I knew they brought most of those pathetic women back to the village before this ceremony.
I remember being forced to participate in the ceremony like a puppet a week after I was taken to the village in my previous life.
I finally realized that no matter whether my boyfriend came or not, she wouldn't let me go.
"Haha, Alicia, since your boyfriend is not coming, I happen to need your help with something. Can you come to my place tomorrow?" said Catherine.
"No!"
I instinctively refused at once.
"Huh?"
I could tell from Catherine's strange look that she didn't expect me to react this way.
I was also aware of my unnatural attitude, so I quickly explained, "Sorry, Mrs. Chase, my boyfriend is not coming today, but he'll come tomorrow, so I don't have time."
"I see."
Catherine said considerately, "Alright. If that's the case, then forget it. Alicia, you are so kind. I believe you'll marry a man of your dreams."
As she spoke, Catherine eyed me with satisfaction.
But her gaze only gave me a creepy feeling.
I hurriedly left after leaving a few words.
It wasn't until I walked out of the community that the horrifying feeling gradually disappeared.
I soon arrived at the Office of Vital Records and got an unmarried certificate.
But I knew this was not enough.
The unmarried certificate could only prove that my marriage to her son, which she declared in my previous life, was totally fabricated.
It couldn't stop her from taking me away by force.
To be on the safe side, I came to my cousin Kelvin, who was a policeman, after a moment of hesitation.
When Kelvin saw me, he asked in amazement, "Alicia, isn't your boyfriend going to your home today? Why are you here?"
"Kelvin, would you do me a favor?" I asked hesitantly.
My rebirth was something too unbelievable.
Kelvin had always been good to me since I was a child, but he never believed in the existence of the paranormal, let alone rebirth.
I took a deep breath, concealed the fact that I was reborn, and made up a reason.
"I heard from people in our community that my neighbor had been spreading rumors that her son and I were married, and she even faked evidence of our marriage, waiting to sabotage my boyfriend's meeting with my family.
"Kelvin, can you pretend to be my boyfriend tomorrow? I'd like to see what tricks they will play."
"What?"
Kelvin said angrily, "Don't worry, I'll be there tomorrow. I want to see who dares to hurt you like this."
"Thank you, Kelvin," I said with gratitude.
When I got home, I told my parents about the situation with the same explanation.
"How can they do this?"
My mother raged, "We treat them with kindness, yet she is spreading rumors about our daughter like this. How can she be so mean?"
"Let me go and ask her what on earth she wants to do!" my father said with a furious face.
I dissuaded the two of them, saying that we had no evidence yet and telling them to wait and see whether our neighbors would come tomorrow.
After my constant persuasion, my parents finally calmed down.
The next day, Kelvin pretended to be my boyfriend and came to my place with gifts.
When he arrived at the door, I could feel an eye staring at us coldly through the peephole in the door of Catherine's house.
Sure enough, less than half an hour after we returned home, there was a knock on the door.
We looked at each other.
Here they came!
