Chapter 6

Tiffany's eyes glimmered with anger, “What are you trying to say? Why would I feel guilty? Damian and I got together after Sophia died.”

Oh my God! How had I not seen this part of Tiffany? She was a heartless liar. I wanted to call her out, but I forced myself to remain cool.

“Sophia? That was her name?” I gazed at her, “What was she like?”

Tiffany laughed bitterly, “Don't get it wrong, I loved her like a sister, but Sophia thought she was better than everyone else. Because she came from a rich and loving family, she considered me a charity case. She always paid for my clothes, introduced me to all her friends, and basically took me everywhere she went.”

I gasped. Tiffany resented me for being a good friend? I'd never thought of her as a charity case, instead I'd considered her as the sister I never had. So this was how she had truly felt about me?

“Did she know you felt this way?”

“God no! I couldn't tell her. What if she stopped being nice to me?” Tiffany used a tissue paper to dab at her lips, wiping off a little smudge.

I shook my head. I'd hoped Tiffany would be remorseful about what she'd done, but she wasn't.

“Does Damian know you felt this way about his ex-wife?” I asked.

Tiffany shrugged before she stilled and turned around to face me squarely, “Wait a minute! Why are you asking me so many questions about Sophia?”

“Uh ...” I stuttered and thought of a good lie. I didn't want Tiffany becoming suspicious of me, “I don't know her. The whole thing of hooking up with your best friend's widower seems very interesting to me.”

“Very well,” Tiffany relaxed. She returned her lipstick into her purse, “Nice chatting with you. I think you and I need to join forces if we want to marry into this family.”

I blushed, “Ethan and I are not that serious. And why would we need to join forces?”

“Duh,” Tiffany snapped, “To defeat that classist old biddy.”

She was talking about Denise again, “Okay.”

Maybe if I got close to Tiffany, she would admit that Damian had pushed me out of the window. Maybe that was just what I needed. I decided to cover all bases, I would do just about anything to bring Damian and Tiffany down.

“We should hang out sometime,” I offered, “So you can give me tips on how to handle Denise.”

Seeing she'd secured a partner in crime, Tiffany smiled, “I'd like that.”

With that, she exited the bathroom and I followed her, happy with the progress I'd made.

Outside, we found Damian leaning against the wall, his hands in his pockets. When he saw us, he flashed us a playboy's grin. Seven months back, the boyish grin would have made me weak in the knees, but now, I was repulsed by it.

“What were you two doing in there?” Damian chuckled as Tiffany embraced him.

Tiffany answered, “We were just touching up on our makeup and talking.”

Damian made a disappointed sound, “And here I was, thinking you two were getting down and dirty in there.”

“Damian!” Tiffany smacked his shoulder with mock-affront, “Could you not say things like that to Elena?”

Damian's eyes slyly shifted to me, “Why not? Elena strikes me as a very intelligent woman who's open to ... explore and experience new things.”

I almost threw up on the spot although I hadn't eaten anything. Was Damian insinuating a threesome with me? From the way, he said it, it was something he frequently indulged in. It pained me that he must have been doing that behind my back when we were together.

“I'm sorry, Mr Hale,” I gritted out, “But I'm not as adventurous as you think.”

Damian shrugged, “Suit yourself, but if you change your mind ...”

“I don't think I will.” I asserted firmly.

Tiffany cleared her throat, “So, Damian what are you doing here? Shouldn't you be at the table?”

“Mummy sent me to see what's holding you two up. Dinner has been served, and we're waiting for you ladies.”

“Oh,” Tiffany looped her arm through Damian's, “Let's go then.”

Damian unlooped Tiffany's arm, “Honey, why don’t you go ahead to the table? I have stuff to discuss with Elena.”

Tiffany's shoulders slumped and she got an insecure look on her face, “Damian ...”

“Just go.” Damian ordered harshly, and Tiffany reluctantly walked away.

Being left alone with Damian made my hackles rise. I couldn't believe I was face-to-face, alone with my attempted murderer.

Damian must have sensed my fear because he raised his hands up, “Hey, I'm not going to harm you, so calm down.”

You have already harmed me! I thought furiously.

“What do you want?” I said, acting calm.

“I want to talk to you about an opportunity to make millions,” Damian rubbed his hands together, “At the table, you said something about building an investment portfolio.”

“Yes,” I agreed, wondering where this was going.

“Well, I have the perfect business for you to invest in.” Damian announced.

“What is it?”

“I can't talk about it yet.”

“Why not?”

“It's a secret. I don't want everyone to find out about it yet.”

“Again, why?”

“I don't want any competitors finding out what I'm up to.” Damian's voice was super casual. I smiled internally, because whenever Damian's voice sounded like that, he was lying.

“Although you're being way too secretive for my liking, you've piqued my interest. I would like to know more about this ... business of yours.”

A satisfied smirk played on Damian's lips as he dipped his hand inside his jacket and brought out a business card.

“Here's my card. You can come over to my office tomorrow, and I'll give you the details.”

As I tried to take the card from him, Damian held onto it, “I swear, Miss Montgomery, you remind me of someone I know. my deceased wife.”

My heart suddenly trembled. Did he really see through me this time?
