Chapter 6

The heavy iron gates of the Carrington estate parted silently as the medical transport glided past them, revealing a sprawling sanctuary nestled behind thick perimeter walls and ancient pine trees. For nearly an hour, the vehicle had wound its way up the private mountain road, leaving the flashing lights, honking horns, and endless noise of the city far behind. Through the tinted windows, Ophelia watched the landscape shift from crowded urban streets to manicured lawns, pristine stone pathways, and vast stretches of dark woods that gave the property an air of absolute isolation and tranquility.

When the vehicle finally came to a smooth stop beneath the grand portico of the main residence, the double glass doors of the entrance opened immediately. Several staff members dressed in understated black attire stood waiting, their posture immaculate and respectful.

Soren was the first to step out of the cabin, turning back to offer a steady hand as Ophelia prepared to exit. "Take your time," Soren said, his voice soft and patient as he steadied her against the slight dizziness that still clung to her from the concussion. "You are completely safe here. No one will ever be able to reach you or hurt you in this house."

Ophelia took a slow, deep breath, resting her hand gently on his forearm. The night air was crisp and cool against her skin, carrying the clean scent of pine and damp earth rather than the stale antiseptic smell of the hospital ward she had left behind. As she stepped onto the polished stone steps, Roderick walked up beside her, shielding her other side with quiet, watchful care.

"Welcome home, little sister," Roderick said with a warm, reassuring smile that softened the usual sharp edges of his features. "We've kept this place ready for you for over twenty years. It's about time you finally walked through those front doors."

Inside, the foyer was breathtaking. A sweeping double staircase made of dark mahogany curved upward beneath a magnificent crystal chandelier that cast a soft, welcoming glow over the marble floors. There were no harsh fluorescent lights, no shouting nurses, and no frantic footsteps. The entire house breathed a heavy, enduring sense of peace and permanence.

Staff members stepped forward quietly to handle their coats and bags, moving with the practiced efficiency of people who understood the value of absolute discretion. A middle-aged woman with kind eyes and silver-streaked hair tied back in a neat bun stepped out from the hallway, her hands clasped respectfully in front of her apron.

"Mr. Soren, Mr. Roderick," the woman said, her voice trembling slightly as her gaze shifted past them to land on Ophelia. Tears welled up instantly in the woman's eyes, her hands flying to cover her mouth in sheer disbelief. "Is it... is it really her?"

"It's her, Mrs. Gable," Soren said, a rare, gentle smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Our sister has finally come home."

Mrs. Gable hurried forward, stopping a few feet away as if afraid she might frighten someone who had been lost for so long. "Welcome home, Miss Ophelia," the older woman choked out, bowing her head slightly. "I've prayed for this day every single morning since you were taken from us. Please, let us take care of you now."

"Thank you, Mrs. Gable," Ophelia replied, her throat tightening with a sudden wave of emotion she had not anticipated. For years, she had survived by keeping her guard up, by shrinking herself to fit into the margins of other people's lives. To be welcomed into a home where people had genuinely waited and prayed for her return felt entirely overwhelming.

"We arranged the master suite on the third floor," Soren explained, guiding her gently toward the private elevator at the back of the foyer. "It has the best view of the valley, and we had the medical team set up a private recovery area so you can rest without having to deal with hospital stairs or public corridors."

They rode the elevator up in comfortable silence, the smooth machinery lifting them effortlessly above the main levels of the house. When the doors slid open, they stepped out into a private hallway lined with warm wood paneling and framed oil paintings. Soren led her down the corridor and pushed open a set of heavy double doors leading into a magnificent suite.

The room was vast, decorated in muted tones of cream, silver, and deep charcoal, with large floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the moonlit mountain valley below. A plush king-sized bed with thick linen covers stood at the center of the room, flanked by antique nightstands and a warm stone fireplace where a gentle fire was already crackling.

"This is yours," Roderick said, walking over to open the French doors leading out onto a wide private balcony before closing them against the night chill. "And don't worry about luggage or clothes. We had our private shoppers bring in a complete wardrobe earlier today, so you won't have to think about anything except getting your strength back."

Before Ophelia could respond, a gentle knock sounded at the entryway of the suite, and Dr. Harrison—who had been brought to the estate aboard a separate private transport arranged by the Carringtons—stepped into the room carrying his medical bag, accompanied by a younger female specialist.

"I hope I'm not interrupting," Dr. Harrison said politely, offering a reassuring smile as he adjusted his glasses. "I just wanted to do a quick post-transport check on your vitals, Ophelia, and make sure the transition didn't aggravate your ribs or concussion."

"Please, come in, Doctor," Ophelia said, sitting down on the edge of the plush sofa near the fireplace while Soren and Roderick stood quietly nearby, their presence remaining a constant, protective shield.

For the next twenty minutes, Dr. Harrison and the specialist conducted a thorough, gentle examination. They checked her heartbeat, inspected the bandages at the base of her neck where the birthmark was hidden beneath her dark hair, and reviewed the digital scans of her ribs.

"Everything looks stable," Dr. Harrison announced finally, closing his leather case with a soft click. "The concussion symptoms are subsiding nicely, and your ribs are healing just as we would expect given the severity of the impact. The most important prescription right now, Ophelia, is complete rest, good food, and zero stress."

"She'll have all three," Soren stated firmly, walking the doctor toward the door. "Thank you for your discretion today, Harrison. Our private security team will ensure your safe return home whenever you're ready."

"It was an honor, Mr. Carrington," the doctor replied, bowing his head slightly before stepping out into the hallway.

Mrs. Gable returned shortly after with a silver tray carrying a warm, nourishing bowl of broth and light pastries, setting it on the low table in front of the sofa. She stayed just long enough to make sure Ophelia was comfortable before quietly retiring from the room, leaving the three siblings alone in the warm, quiet sanctuary of the suite.

Ophelia sipped the warm broth slowly, feeling the heat spread through her chest and ease the lingering tension in her muscles. She looked up from the cup to see both of her brothers sitting across from her, their expressions entirely focused on her well-being.

"You don't have to keep standing guard over me, you know," Ophelia said softly, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

"We know you aren't," Roderick said, leaning back against the sofa with a relaxed posture, though his eyes remained sharp and attentive. "We just spent twenty-two years finding you. Give us a few days to get used to the fact that you're actually sitting across from us instead of trapped in a file folder."

Soren reached across the table, pouring her another cup of warm tea before speaking. "How are you holding up mentally with everything that happened over the last twenty-four hours? The crash, the hospital, discovering who we are... it's a lot to process all at once."

"It is a lot," Ophelia admitted, her gaze dropping back to her teacup as she stirred the liquid slowly. "Part of me still feels like I'm waiting to wake up in that public ward and realize this was just a very vivid dream. But then I remember Lucien's text message, and I realize how foolish I was for three years. I gave him everything, Soren. I stayed quiet, I helped him build his career, and the moment I wasn't useful, he threw me away like garbage."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop slightly as Soren’s jaw tightened. "You don't ever have to look back at that man again, Ophelia. What belongs to him, what he thinks he owns—it's all built on sand. And we hold the tide."

"I don't want to just walk away and let him pretend I never existed," Ophelia said, raising her slate-grey eyes to meet her brother's gaze, her voice dropping into a quiet, resolute register that left no room for argument. "He thought he could crush me and leave me in the dirt. I want him to know exactly who he threw away."

Roderick let out a low whistle, a slow, approving smile spreading across his face as he looked at his sister. "Oh, you're definitely a Carrington. There's no doubt about that anymore."

Soren held her gaze for a long moment, studying the quiet strength returning to her posture, before nodding slowly. "Then we'll do it your way, Ophelia. Whatever you want dismantled, we will tear down brick by brick."

He stood up, walking toward the double doors of the suite to give her privacy for the night. "Get some sleep, little sister. Tomorrow morning, Roderick will bring you the complete financial dossier on Lucien Sterling's company, and you can tell us where you want to strike first."

Ophelia watched him pause at the door, her heart steady and clear for the first time in years. "Thank you, Soren. Thank you both."

"Rest well," Soren murmured, pulling the heavy doors shut behind him with a quiet click.

Ophelia turned her head to look out the large glass windows toward the dark, peaceful valley below, a quiet resolve settling deep into her bones. Lucien Sterling had no idea what was coming for him.

"Are you ready to see how the other side plays this game?" Roderick asked from the doorway before stepping out to leave her for the night.
