Chapter 1

After five years of dating, Drake Kane—the Beta who could charm anyone and always knew how to make me smile—gave me the most extravagant birthday gift ever. A brand-new luxury car. Not just any car, but one of the rarest, most expensive models on the market. The kind you only see in magazines or parked in front of billionaire mansions.

I couldn’t help myself—I took a picture of it and posted it on social media. I was proud. Proud of him, of us, of the life we’d built together. Everything felt perfect. Like a dream.

But dreams have a way of turning into nightmares, don’t they?

That night, I got a notification. A message. It was from her. Melanie. I opened it, and my stomach dropped. There were photos attached.

Her and Drake, laughing and holding each other in front of a massive mansion I’d never seen before. And a sleek yacht gleamed in the background, docked in a marina that screamed luxury.

Then came the text: "Your precious car? It was supposed to be mine. But I hated the color. Drake figured he’d just pass them off to you instead. Consider it charity."

My hands shook as I stared at the screen. The woman who was supposed to be just his secretary—his assistant—was sending me proof that everything I thought was mine had been meant for her. She knew. She wanted me to know too. And Drake... he'd let it happen.

I didn’t even wait to hear him out. I found him in his office later that night, watching his laptop screen with that smug smile on his face like everything was normal.

“Drake. What’s this about?”

He looked up at me, completely unfazed. “What do you mean? It’s just business, Cass.”

I didn’t flinch, though I felt my hands shaking. “Don’t lie to me! I saw the pictures, Drake. You bought her a mansion. You bought her a yacht. Why?”

He sighed and leaned back in his chair, clearly bored with the whole thing. “You wouldn’t understand, Cass. You’re too busy running your empire. Always working, always hustling. You don’t even know how to love anymore.”

I felt the sting of his words like a slap. “Is that what you really think of me? That I don’t know how to love?”

He didn’t answer, and in that silence, everything became clear to me. The truth hung between us, thick and suffocating. Drake didn’t love me. He resented me. He resented the power I held, the authority I carried as the Luna of the pack and the CEO of my company. He couldn’t stand being in my shadow, and I had known it all along. The way he always tried to diminish my accomplishments, the little jabs at my ambition—it had all led up to this.

I took a deep breath and stood up. “I’m done,” I said simply and dropped his pathetic ring. “This engagement is over.”

He stared at me like I had slapped him, his jaw dropping. “What? You can’t be serious.”

But I was. I was more serious than I had ever been in my life. I had given him everything—my heart, my loyalty, my trust. And this was how he repaid me.

I grabbed my phone and opened up the pack’s social media account. Without hesitation, I posted: “Effective immediately, I am ending my engagement with Drake Kane. The betrayal I’ve experienced is irreparable. I will not stay in a relationship where my worth is overlooked.”

The second I hit send, I felt lighter, like a weight I hadn’t even realized was there had been lifted from my chest.

As soon as the post went live, my phone buzzed. It was my mother. Of course.

“Cassandra,” her voice crackled through the phone, “What on earth are you doing? Do you realize how much is at stake here?! Your father and I didn’t work so hard to build this family empire for you to throw it all away. You need to fix this. Now!”

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “Mom, I’m not fixing anything. This isn’t something I can just sweep under the rug.”

“You don’t have a choice, Cassandra. You’re the Luna. You’re the leader. Think about the pack. Think about the future of our business. Our family needs Drake! You can’t afford to let personal drama destroy everything.”

I wanted to scream. I wanted to tell her that she didn’t understand, that she couldn’t see how deeply hurt I was, how broken I felt. But I just didn’t have the energy anymore.

“I’ve made my decision,” I said quietly. “And I’m sticking to it.”

I hung up before she could say anything else.

Then, I posted again, this time more publicly, on my own account: “Drake Kane has been relieved of his position as Beta of our pack. I won’t allow any more dishonesty, not in my personal life or in the pack I lead.”

Drake hadn’t responded to my first post, but when he saw the second one, I knew it hit him hard. He called me multiple times, but I ignored him.

He left me a voicemail, his voice trembling with rage. “You’re making a huge mistake, Cassandra! You think you’re the only one who has power in this relationship? You’re wrong.”

I didn’t need to hear any more. I had seen enough.

Later that night, I stood on the balcony of my penthouse, looking out at the city below. It was my birthday, and yet, it felt like the end of everything I had known. The man I loved had betrayed me, and my family wasn’t on my side. But for the first time in years, I felt like I was making the right choice. I had always put my pack and my work first. Now, it was time to put myself first.
