Chapter 2

The Azure Lounge looked exactly as I remembered it—dim lighting that made everyone look mysterious, brass fixtures that needed constant polishing, that particular smell of expensive liquor and desperation. I'd spent three years behind that bar, mixing drinks for people who never saw me as anything more than the hands pouring their whiskey.

My former manager, Rick, nearly dropped his clipboard when I walked in.

"Katherine? Jesus, I thought—" He stopped himself, probably remembering the headlines. Everyone had seen Logan's announcement by now. Everyone knew I'd been replaced. "What are you doing here?"

"I need a favor." I kept my voice steady, businesslike. "One night. Private event. I'll pay whatever you need."

His eyes narrowed with curiosity, but Rick had always been decent to me. "The bar's yours tonight. No charge. You earned it, working all those shifts." He paused. "For what it's worth, that guy's an asshole."

I didn't correct him about the tense. Logan had always been an asshole. I'd just been too busy loving him to notice.

That evening, I set up my phone on a tripod behind the bar, adjusted the lighting, and slipped into my old bartending outfit—black shirt, fitted pants, the uniform of invisible service workers everywhere. My hands remembered the familiar weight of bottles, the precise measurements, the theatrical flourishes that had earned me decent tips.

I went live without announcement or warning.

"Good evening," I said to the camera, to the handful of viewers who'd stumbled onto my stream. "Tonight, I'm creating two new signature cocktails. The first one's called 'Ungrateful Bastard.'" I grabbed the dark rum, my movements sharp and deliberate. "It starts bitter, stays bitter, and leaves a nasty aftertaste that lingers for years."

Black coffee, a splash of absinthe, dark rum, and a twist of lemon peel that I crushed between my fingers. The drink looked as ugly as it tasted.

"This one's dedicated to men who forget where they came from. Who forget the people who supported them when they had nothing." I poured it into a glass, the liquid catching the light like oil. "Men who measure love in dollar signs and relationships in quarterly returns."

The viewer count ticked upward. Fifty. A hundred. Five hundred.

"The second cocktail," I continued, reaching for the vodka, "is called 'Two-Faced Bitch.' It looks sweet—see the pink color? The sugar rim? You'd think it's something innocent." I added lime juice, bitters, a drop of hot sauce hidden beneath the sweetness. "But that first sip will tell you everything you need to know about pretty things that smile while they stab you."

A woman at the end of the bar—one of Rick's regulars—raised her hand. "I'll take the Bitch."

Others followed. The bar filled with people drawn by word of mouth, by the growing buzz online. I mixed drinks and told stories, carefully avoiding names but painting pictures everyone could recognize. A woman who worked three jobs to pay her partner's legal fees. A young girl who received charity for a decade, never understanding that generosity came from genuine kindness, not weakness.

"The thing about ungrateful people," I said, my hands steady as I poured another round, "is they always think they got there on their own. They rewrite history until they're the hero, and everyone who helped them becomes either irrelevant or opportunistic." I looked directly at the camera. "They forget that receipts exist. That truth has a way of surfacing."

The viewer count hit two million before midnight.

By the next morning, I was viral. Social media detectives had already started connecting dots—the timing of my stream, Logan's recent announcement, the descriptions that matched too perfectly to be coincidence. My phone buzzed incessantly with messages, interview requests, people taking sides before they even knew the full story.

I ignored most of it. But I did watch the one video that mattered.

Amber, in what I recognized as Logan's apartment—our apartment, the one I'd helped him afford—posted an Instagram story. Her hands shook slightly as she held up printed screenshots of my old bartending schedule, my time cards, even a photo of me behind the Azure Lounge bar that someone must have dug up.

"This is Katherine Thompson," Amber said, her voice quivering with manufactured emotion. "She's been harassing Logan and me since we went public with our relationship. She was a bartender who trapped a promising young lawyer when he had nothing, and now she's bitter about losing her meal ticket."

The comments flooded in immediately. "Gold digger." "Desperate." "Get over it, honey."

Logan's statement came through official channels—a quote to a business journalist I recognized, someone he'd cultivated during his rise. "Katherine and I ended our relationship by mutual agreement. She's struggling with the transition, and while I sympathize, her recent behavior is concerning. I've been advised to document everything for potential legal action."

Legal action. He was threatening me with lawyers—the career I'd funded.

Then Amber posted the video that made my hands clench around my phone. She sat on Logan's leather couch, tears streaming down her face with impressive theatricality. "Logan and I finally found the courage to love openly, to be honest about our feelings. But Katherine won't stop threatening us, harassing us, trying to destroy what we've built." She wiped her eyes. "I'm scared. We both are. But we won't let her bitterness ruin our happiness."

The narrative shifted in real-time. My notifications filled with accusations, with people calling me pathetic, with strangers who knew nothing about me declaring that I needed to "move on" and "stop being bitter."

I sat in my apartment, watching myself get vilified by thousands of people who would never know the truth. Who would never know that the bartending money went to Logan's bar exam fees, his student loans, his first office deposit. Who would never know that Amber's college tuition came from me, that her mother's medical bills were paid by someone she now called a stalker.

My phone rang. An unknown number. I answered it anyway.

"They're burying you," a familiar voice said. Sophie Martinez, my college roommate, the friend I'd pushed away years ago when she'd tried to warn me about Logan. "You need to fight back properly. Not with cocktails and metaphors."

"I know," I said quietly.

"Do you? Because right now, you're the villain in their story. And villains don't win by playing nice."

I looked at the check still sitting on my desk. Five million dollars. Compensation for ten years of my life.

They thought they'd bought my silence, my dignity, my truth.

They had no idea what they'd actually purchased.

"You're right," I told Sophie. "It's time to stop playing."

I ended the call and opened my laptop. The first email went to my father's office. The second went to Richard Hayes, the man who'd structured Logan's mysterious investment.

The third was to my lawyer.

Logan and Amber wanted to control the narrative? They were about to learn that some stories can't be rewritten. Some truths can't be buried under pretty lies and social media spin.

And some women don't stay down just because you've pushed them.
