Chapter 3

I left with one suitcase that night. I didn't say a word to either of them in the hallway.

Sophia watched me go with her hand on Aaron's arm.

Aaron didn't stop me.

---

"You're sure about this?"

Diane Okafor slid the draft across her desk. She'd been my family's attorney since I was twelve. She had never once asked me if I was sure about anything.

"I'm sure."

"Kassia, the penthouse is in both names. The Hamptons house. The Cartier pieces. The shares he signed over on your first anniversary." She tapped the page. "You're entitled to half of everything."

"I don't want half of anything." I pushed the pen back toward her. "Strike all of it. I'll take what I brought into the marriage. My trust. My grandmother's apartment on Bank Street."

"That's it?"

"And my name."

Diane studied me for a long moment. Then she picked up the pen and drew a single line through four pages.

"Friday," she said. "Ten a.m. Bring him."

---

Friday morning, I stood in Diane's lobby with the agreement in my hands.

Aaron was late. Of course he was late.

The room tilted. Just slightly, like a boat shifting under me.

"Mrs. Calloway?" The receptionist half rose from her chair. "You've gone white."

"I'm fine. I just need..."

The floor came up to meet me.

---

"Seven weeks," the doctor said.

I lay on the paper sheet with cold gel on my stomach and stared at the screen. A gray blur. A tiny flicker in the middle of it, fast as a hummingbird.

"That's the heartbeat," she said gently. "Strong one."

I didn't cry right away.

I laughed first. One short, broken sound. The doctor glanced at me, startled.

Then the tears came, and they didn't stop.

*Seven weeks.* Our anniversary had been five days ago. This baby had been inside me when I stood in that garage. When I threw the ring. When my forehead hit the table.

The doctor printed the scan and pressed it into my hand. "Is there someone you'd like me to call?"

I folded the photo in half. Unfolded it.

"Yes," I whispered. "His father."

---

Aaron came within twenty minutes. His tie was crooked. He'd never once let me see him with a crooked tie.

"Diane said you collapsed." He stopped at the foot of the bed. "What's wrong? Is it the stitches?"

I held out the ultrasound.

He took it. He frowned at it. Then his whole face changed.

"Is this..."

"Seven weeks."

He didn't speak. His thumb traced the edge of the photo like it might tear. When he finally lifted his eyes, they were wet and red-rimmed.

I had seen Aaron furious. Bored. Cold. I had never seen him cry.

"My father left before I could walk," he said, his voice rough. "My mother handed me to nannies. I spent every Christmas at boarding school." He swallowed hard. "I swore if I ever had a kid, they'd never feel that."

"Aaron..."

He sank to his knees beside the bed.

Aaron Calloway. On a hospital floor. He gripped my hand in both of his.

"Give me one last chance," he said. "I'll be a good husband. A good father. I swear it, Kassia."

The divorce papers sat in my purse on the chair. I could feel them there, like a hot coal.

"You told me I was a stand-in."

"I was wrong."

"You told me you never would have married me."

"I was *wrong*." His grip tightened. "Let me prove it."

I looked at the scan in his hand. That tiny flicker.

I didn't say yes.

But I didn't say no.

---

He moved fast after that.

At the Calloway Foundation gala, in front of two hundred guests and his mother, he raised a glass. "My wife and I are expecting. From now on, my family comes first."

Sophia stood near the bar. She clapped with everyone else.

The next day, Diane called. "Did you know he canceled a lease? A penthouse on Central Park South. Twelve million. The tenant listed was a Sophia Lane."

I set down my coffee. Black. No sugar.

"No," I said. "I didn't know."

That weekend, I found him on the floor of the guest room with a screwdriver and a crib that was clearly winning.

"You could hire someone," I said from the doorway.

"I could." He didn't look up. "I won't."

He'd painted one wall pale yellow. Not blue. Not gray.

Something in my chest loosened a little. I hated that it did.

---

Sophia sent a text the following Monday.

**Sophia:** Congratulations, truly. A baby is a blessing. I'm so happy for you both. 💕

That night, Aaron's phone rang at 11 p.m. Sophia had a migraine. Two nights later, she fainted at a gallery. Then she couldn't sleep. Then she couldn't breathe.

"She's alone in this city," Aaron said, pulling on his coat. "I'll be an hour."

He was always back in an hour.

Mostly.

Chloe didn't send anything. But the night of the gala, she'd cornered me outside the ladies' room. Her mascara was smeared. Her voice shook.

"You trapped him."

"Go home, Chloe."

"Twenty years." She jabbed a finger into my collarbone. "I waited twenty years. Sophia I could live with. Sophia leaves. But you?" Her laugh cracked down the middle. "You get to keep him *forever* now?"

Security walked her out. She was still screaming my name in the lobby.

---

My twelve-week appointment was on a Thursday at five-thirty.

"I'll meet you there," Aaron promised that morning. He kissed my forehead, right over the healing scar. "I moved two meetings. I'm not missing it."

At 5:20, I stood outside the clinic entrance in a white sundress. The sky had gone orange over Park Avenue.

At 5:28, my phone buzzed.

**Aaron:** Sophia says her heart is racing. She's scared. Sophia needs me. You go home on your own.

I read it once.

I didn't cry. I didn't even sigh. I just put the phone in my bag and thought, very calmly, *Of course.*

My hand drifted to my stomach. "It's okay," I murmured. "We're used to it."

An engine roared.

I turned my head.

A red Ferrari jumped the curb at the corner, tires shrieking. It wasn't slowing down. It was speeding up.

Through the windshield, I saw her face. Chloe. Mouth wide. Eyes wild.

"If your baby dies," she screamed through the open window, "Aaron belongs to us again!"

I stumbled back. My heel snagged.

The impact didn't hurt at first. It was just noise. Glass. Metal. My body leaving the ground.

Then the pavement.

I lay on my side by the curb. Something warm spread beneath me. I looked down.

The white dress was turning red. From the hem upward.

"No," I breathed. "No, no, please..."

Footsteps pounded toward me. Someone dropped to his knees. A white coat. Strong arms slid under my shoulders and lifted me against his chest.

"Stay with me. Look at me. What's your name?"

"Baby," I managed. "I'm... twelve weeks..."

His jaw went hard. He twisted toward the clinic doors and roared, "I need a gurney! Trauma, now! She's pregnant!"

My vision blurred at the edges. I fixed on the only thing still sharp.

The name badge clipped to his coat.

*Dr. Neon Sterling.*

Sterling. The name on half the hospital wings in Manhattan. The only son of the most powerful medical family in America.

He pressed his palm flat against my stomach, his voice suddenly low and fierce, meant only for me.

"Hold on. Both of you. Do you hear me? I'm not losing either of you tonight."

And then everything went dark.
