Chapter 2

The studio apartment was barely larger than Flynn's walk-in closet. Three blocks from Capitol Hill, its single window offered a view of the Capitol dome—a constant reminder of what I was fighting for. The realtor had called it "cozy." I called it freedom.

I stood at the window, watching dawn break over Washington. My alarm had gone off at 5 AM, as it did every morning now. The Presidential Advisory Program demanded perfection, and I intended to deliver.

"Day seven," I whispered to myself, running my fingers through my short hair—a habit I'd developed since cutting it. The woman in the reflection looked focused, determined. Nothing like the shadow I'd been for seven years.

My daily routine was carved into stone: five hours reviewing policy briefings, three hours studying current conflicts, two hours practicing strategic frameworks. Lunch was coffee and whatever I could grab from the vending machine in the library. Dinner was often forgotten.

The knock on my door came precisely at 8 PM.

"I brought takeout," Victoria Ashford said, holding up a bag that smelled suspiciously of Thai food. "You're burning the candle at both ends."

She wasn't wrong. The Pentagon official had taken an unexpected interest in my application, becoming an unlikely mentor in the process.

"I need to be prepared," I said, stepping aside to let her in.

Victoria set the food down on my tiny kitchen counter, which was covered with maps, intelligence reports, and strategy papers.

"You're doing more than prepare, Meadow. You're rebuilding yourself." Her eyes were sharp but kind. "That requires fuel."

Over dinner, she slid a key card across the table.

"After-hours access to the Pentagon archives," she said. "Section 7 is particularly relevant to your interests."

My pulse quickened. "That's—"

"Classified. Yes." She smiled thinly. "But sometimes the truth hides in plain sight."

---

The Pentagon archives were silent at midnight. My footsteps echoed as I made my way to Section 7, Victoria's key card granting me entry to rooms I'd only read about in clearance documents.

The Syrian Crisis files were thicker than I'd expected. I spread them across the metal table, my father's military medal heavy in my pocket.

Hours passed as I sifted through intelligence reports, operational plans, and after-action analyses. Something didn't add up.

"Look at this," I murmured to myself, comparing two documents side by side. "The dates don't align."

One report claimed my father had transmitted sensitive information to Syrian rebels on June 12th. Another showed he'd been in Washington meeting with the Joint Chiefs that same day.

And here—a signature that looked like his but wasn't quite right. The loop on the 'B' was too pronounced, the pressure too light.

"Forged," I whispered, my hands trembling.

I dug deeper, finding suppressed communications that contradicted the official narrative. Memos that should have exonerated my father. Intelligence that showed the real culprits had been protected while he took the fall.

The pieces were falling into place. My father hadn't been a traitor. He'd been a sacrifice.

---

"Ms. Bennett," the panel chairman said, "why do you want to serve as Presidential Advisor?"

The Old Executive Office Building felt impossibly grand after weeks in my tiny apartment. Seven senior officials sat before me, their expressions ranging from skeptical to bored.

"I believe that merit, not connections, should determine who serves this nation's interests," I said, meeting each of their gazes in turn. "And I intend to prove that intelligence and dedication matter more than political pedigree."

The room stirred. One of the female panelists leaned forward, interest flickering in her eyes.

"That's quite a statement," she said. "Especially given your... limited experience in government service."

"I've been serving this country for seven years," I replied evenly. "Just not with my name attached to the work."

I couldn't mention Flynn's stolen strategies or the tactical plans I'd crafted. But I could let them see what I was capable of now.

As I left the room, I caught Daniel Cross making a note in my file. His lips curved in what might have been a smile.

"Family background concerns," he muttered, just loud enough for me to hear.

---

The invitation arrived on cream-colored cardstock, embossed with gold lettering.

"You're cordially invited to a charity gala benefiting military families, hosted by Rhea Stone."

There was a handwritten note at the bottom: "I hope you'll join us in supporting our heroes. -R"

I stared at the invitation, feeling the weight of it in my hands. Rhea was hosting a gala at the Four Seasons—a venue that cost more per plate than my monthly rent.

The news alert popped up on my phone simultaneously: "Future Mrs. Griffin Hosts Lavish Charity Event."

Rhea smiled from the screen, her arm linked with Flynn's, both of them surrounded by cameras and admirers.

"We're so grateful for the opportunity to give back," she was quoted as saying. "My journey of sacrifice alongside General Griffin has taught me the true meaning of service."

Sacrifice. Service.

I folded the invitation carefully and placed it in my desk drawer, next to my father's medal.

Let her have her gala. Let her play the perfect military wife.

I had archives to search and truths to uncover.
