Chapter 1

The bond broke at 10:14 on a Tuesday night, in front of two hundred wolves and a cake shaped like a crescent moon.

I smelled him before I saw him. Henry's blood-scent—the one I'd memorized through five years of marking, the one that made my wolf purr in recognition every morning—was all over the child border patrol dragged into the banquet hall. The boy couldn't have been older than five. His clothes were torn. His face was streaked with dirt and tears. But the scent rising from his skin was unmistakable.

My wolf went silent. Not angry. Not confused. Just… silent. Like she already knew.

I set down my champagne glass. The pack was still laughing, still toasting my pregnancy. Someone had just made a joke about how many diapers an Alpha pup would need. The noise felt very far away.

I crossed the hall. The crowd parted without me asking. When I crouched in front of the boy, his wide eyes locked on mine. He had Henry's jaw. Henry's brow line. I reached out to steady him, and my fingers brushed his wrist.

The bond mark on my neck turned cold.

Not painful. Not burning. Just cold. Like someone had opened a window in winter and all the warmth drained out in one breath.

I stood slowly and turned. Henry was at the head table, twenty feet away. His face was stone. Not shocked. Not panicked. Just stone. Like he'd been waiting for this moment and had already decided how he would stand when it came.

"Ariana." His voice carried across the hall. Alpha tone. The kind that made lesser wolves drop their eyes. "Step away from the child."

I didn't move. My wolf stirred for the first time since the boy walked in, and her growl was so low I felt it in my ribs before I heard it.

"Whose is he?" My voice came out steady. I pressed my right hand flat against my sternum. The cold from the mark was spreading.

Henry stood. The room went quiet. Two hundred wolves held their breath.

"Mine," he said.

The word landed like a stone in still water. I watched the ripples spread—wolves glancing at each other, at me, at Henry. The Beta shifted his weight. The Gamma's mate covered her mouth.

I looked at the boy again. He was shaking. I pulled off my shawl and wrapped it around his shoulders. "What's your name?"

"Hugo," he whispered.

"How old are you, Hugo?"

"Five."

Five years. I'd been Henry's mate for five years. I'd been his marked Luna for five years. This child was five years old.

I straightened and walked toward Henry. The crowd parted again. My heels clicked on the marble floor. Each step made the cold in my neck spread a little further—down my spine, into my shoulders, wrapping around my ribs like hands.

When I reached him, I stopped. We were the same height in these shoes. I could see the exact moment he decided not to explain.

"We need to talk," I said quietly. "Now."

He looked past me at the crowd. "Not here."

"Now."

Something flickered in his eyes. Not guilt. Calculation. He nodded once and walked toward the corridor that led to his office. I followed.

Behind us, the banquet hall erupted in whispers.

The corridor was empty. The noise from the hall faded as the door swung shut. Henry stopped in the middle of the hallway and turned to face me. He didn't go to his office. He didn't want privacy. He wanted distance from witnesses, but not enough distance that I could corner him.

Smart.

"Who's the mother?" I asked.

He didn't hesitate. "Brielle."

The name meant nothing to me. I waited.

"From the eastern border pack," he added. "We formed a bond before I marked you."

The cold in my neck reached my fingertips. I flexed my hands. "Before."

"Yes."

"And you never severed it."

"No."

My wolf snarled. The sound echoed in the corridor. Henry's eyes flicked to my throat—to the mark that was still there, still visible, but no longer warm.

"Why?" The question came out flat. I didn't recognize my own voice.

He looked at me for a long moment. Then he said the thing that made everything else make sense.

"Your aura was useful to Shadowmere."

Not *you were important*. Not *I made a mistake*. Not even *I loved you both*.

Useful.

I pressed my hand harder against my sternum. The bond was still there—I could feel it, a thin thread stretched between us. But it wasn't warm anymore. It wasn't alive. It was just… there. Like scar tissue.

"How long have you been maintaining both bonds?" My voice was still steady. I was proud of that.

"Five years."

"Where does she live?"

"A house on the western edge of her pack's territory. I redirected some of our resources to—"

"Our resources."

He stopped.

"You used Shadowmere's resources," I said slowly, "to maintain a second household. For a bond you never severed. While I managed your pack house. While I healed your warriors. While I carried your pup."

He didn't answer.

I looked at him—really looked at him. The man I'd trusted with everything. The man whose mark I wore. The man I'd built my entire life around.

He looked back at me with the same stone face he'd worn in the banquet hall.

And I understood.

He wasn't sorry. He wasn't conflicted. He'd made his choice five years ago, and he'd simply been waiting to see how long it would take me to find out.

"I want the financial records," I said. "Every transfer. Every redirected store. Every warrior you sent to her territory instead of ours."

His jaw tightened. "Ariana—"

"I want them by morning."

I turned and walked back toward the banquet hall. Behind me, I heard him take a step forward.

"You're still my Luna," he said. Alpha tone again. Heavier this time. "You don't give me orders."

I stopped. My wolf rose inside me, and for the first time in my life, I felt her push against my skin like she wanted out.

I looked over my shoulder.

"Then unmake me," I said.

His eyes widened. Just slightly. Just enough.

I smiled. It didn't reach my eyes.

"If I'm so useful," I said softly, "let's see what happens when I stop."

I pushed open the banquet hall doors. Two hundred wolves turned to look at me. I walked to the head table, picked up my champagne glass, and raised it.

"To Shadowmere," I said. My voice carried. "And to the Alpha who built it on lies."

I drank. Set the glass down. And walked out.

The mark on my neck was ice-cold now. But my hands were steady.

And I had a list to make.
