Chapter 4

"I'm here for the child."

The voice cut through the hallway before Vesper even saw who it belonged to, low, flat, utterly certain, the kind of voice that had never once needed to be raised to be obeyed.

She turned to find a tall man in a dark suit striding past the security guards like they were furniture, two others in near-identical suits flanking him half a step behind. He didn't look at the guards. He didn't look at the nurses' station. He looked directly at Vesper, and something in his gaze made her want to physically step between him and the door to Orion's room.

"Excuse me?" Vesper straightened, every protective instinct she had snapping fully awake. "Who exactly are you?"

"Darius Blackthorn." He said it like she should already know, and something in the set of his jaw suggested he was mildly surprised she didn't. "I received a notification twenty minutes ago that a child matching my family's genetic registry entry was admitted to this facility."

"Your family's—" Vesper's voice cracked with disbelief. "This is my son you're talking about. Not an *entry.*"

"I understand this is distressing." He said the word distressing the way other people said inconvenient, acknowledged, filed, moved past. "I'd like to see the boy."

"You'd like—" Vesper actually laughed, short and disbelieving. "You don't get to like anything where my son is concerned. I don't know you. I've never heard your name in my life."

"That may be true." Darius's expression didn't shift, not even slightly, though something behind his eyes seemed to be recalculating her, reassessing whatever he'd expected to find. "It doesn't change why I'm here."

"Then tell me why you're here. In actual words, not corporate ones."

"Your son's genetic profile was flagged against a private registry my family has maintained for three generations." He said it the way other men recited addresses, flat, factual, entirely without apology. "That registry does not misfire. If it flagged him, there's a reason."

"A reason you don't seem inclined to explain."

"I don't have the full explanation yet." For the briefest instant, something almost like discomfort crossed his features before it was folded neatly away again. "I intend to have one before I leave this building."

"You'll forgive me," Vesper said, voice shaking with something between fury and disbelief, "if I don't particularly care what you *intend* to do in my son's hospital right now."

Before Vesper could respond further, the elevator at the end of the hall chimed, and a second man stepped out, broader smile, warmer eyes, an ease to his movement that Darius's rigid posture entirely lacked. He crossed the distance in a few easy strides, extending a hand toward Vesper as though they were meeting at a charity gala instead of a hospital corridor.

"Ms. Rowan, I assume." His voice carried warmth that somehow made Vesper trust him even less than the first man's coldness had. "Nikolai Arden. I imagine today has been unimaginably difficult, and I am so sorry to be adding to it."

"You're the second." Vesper didn't take his hand. "The second family. Aren't you."

"I am." Nikolai's smile didn't waver, though something flickered behind it when his gaze landed on Darius. "Blackthorn. Didn't expect you'd beat me here."

"Arden." Darius's voice went, impossibly, even flatter. "I could say the same."

The two men studied each other for a long moment, no handshake, no pleasantries, just a silence dense enough that Vesper felt it pressing against her ribs. Whatever history existed between them, it clearly hadn't ended anywhere friendly.

"You've met," Vesper said, because someone had to say something, and the silence had gone on a beat too long.

"We're aware of each other." Nikolai's eyes hadn't left Darius. "Competitors, in most rooms that matter. Rarely in the same one at the same time."

"This isn't a boardroom." Darius's voice was quiet, controlled, and somehow more threatening for it. "This is a hospital. I'd ask you to remember that."

"I'm well aware of where I am." Nikolai's smile thinned, just slightly, the warmth cooling by several degrees. "I'd ask the same of you."

"Careful, Arden." Darius's tone didn't rise, but something underneath it hardened, like frost forming over still water. "Whatever quiet arrangement usually keeps our two names out of the same room, I wouldn't test it here."

"Is that a threat, Blackthorn?"

"An observation." Darius's eyes flicked briefly toward Vesper, then back. "We can settle old history somewhere else. There's a child behind that door who has nothing to do with either of our companies."

For the first time, Nikolai's easy composure faltered, not much, just a hairline crack, quickly smoothed back over with another smile. "On that much, at least, we agree."

"Stop." Vesper's voice sliced between them, louder than she intended, loud enough that both men actually turned to look at her fully for the first time since Nikolai had arrived. "Both of you. I don't know who called you, or what registry you think my son is part of, but he is my son. Not a corporate asset. Not a prize the two of you get to fight over in a hallway."

"Ms. Rowan." Darius's tone shifted, marginally, into something that might have been an attempt at gentleness and landed somewhere closer to formal condolence. "I recognize how this appears. But the registry my family maintains does not generate false positives. If your son's profile was flagged, there is a biological basis for it."

"A biological basis." Vesper's hands curled into fists at her sides. "You're telling me my son is genetically connected to your family. A family I've never met, never heard of, never once crossed paths with in my entire life."

"I don't have an explanation for how that came to be." For the first time, something almost human cracked through Darius's composure, a flicker of uncertainty, quickly smoothed over. "I intend to find one."

"So do I," Nikolai said smoothly, stepping half a pace closer to Vesper, angling his body just slightly to put himself between her and Darius. "And unlike some people in this hallway, I'd like to start by making sure the mother and child are comfortable. Ms. Rowan, whatever you need, private room, specialists flown in, anything at all, consider it handled."

"I don't want anything handled." Vesper's voice shook now, exhaustion and fury tangled together. "I want someone to tell me why two strangers showed up within minutes of each other claiming my son as their blood."

"That's fair," Nikolai said, gentler now, though Vesper noticed how quickly he'd repositioned himself as the reasonable one the moment Darius went quiet. "And I promise you'll have answers. But right now, the only thing that should matter to either of us is that boy's health. Everything else can wait."

"Convenient," Darius said, low, "that patience only arrives once the cameras aren't rolling."

Nikolai's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "Careful yourself, Blackthorn."

A throat cleared behind them. Dr. Tanaka stood in the doorway of the consultation room, printout in hand, her expression the particular careful blank of someone about to say something that would detonate the moment it left her mouth.

"Ms. Rowan. Mr. Blackthorn. Mr. Arden." She said each name like she was setting down something fragile. "I have the comparative results."

"And?" Darius asked, already moving toward her.

"Orion's genetic profile shows confirmed familial markers consistent with both the Blackthorn lineage and the Arden lineage." Dr. Tanaka's voice stayed level, professional, though her hand trembled slightly around the paper. "Independently verified. Both are positive matches."

Silence swallowed the hallway whole.

"That's not possible," Darius said, quiet and precise, each word placed like a stone. "A child cannot carry confirmed lineage markers for two entirely unrelated families. The registry doesn't work that way. Biology doesn't work that way."

"I'm aware of how biology works, Mr. Blackthorn." Dr. Tanaka's composure held, barely. "I ran it three times. I had a second lab confirm independently before I brought this to you. The result did not change."

"Run it again." Darius's jaw tightened, the first genuine crack of emotion Vesper had seen in him since he'd walked off the elevator. "Both families cannot be right. One of these results is contaminated, or falsified, or—"

"Mr. Blackthorn." Dr. Tanaka met his eyes directly, and whatever she saw there made her voice drop, gentler now, the way you'd speak to someone standing too close to a ledge. "I understand this isn't what you came prepared to hear. But I need you to understand what I'm telling you. This isn't a testing error."

Nikolai had gone very still beside them, the easy charm draining slowly out of his expression, replaced by something sharper, more calculating.

"Say it plainly, Doctor," he said. "For all our sakes."

Dr. Tanaka looked at Vesper first, a brief, almost apologetic glance, before she answered.

"There is no scenario in standard genetics where this result is a mistake. Orion is biologically connected to both of your families. At the same time. In ways I cannot yet explain."

Nobody spoke. Somewhere down the hall, a monitor beeped steadily, indifferent to the fact that the ground had just shifted beneath every person standing in that corridor.

"I wish I had a cleaner explanation." Dr. Tanaka held the printout out toward Darius, not quite an offering, more a way of proving she wasn't hiding behind vague language. "Every marker we test for a first-degree relationship exists twice over in this child's profile. Once tracing to the Blackthorn line. Once tracing to the Arden line. I have never, in nineteen years of practice, seen a result configured this way."

"Which means what, medically?" Vesper's voice came out smaller than she meant it to. "Please. In words that actually make sense to someone who isn't a geneticist."

"Medically, it means your son shouldn't exist the way he does." Dr. Tanaka chose the words with visible care. "Not through any natural conception either of these families would recognize as normal. Something was done deliberately, and done with considerable precision, for both of these markers to be present at once."

Nikolai had gone very still beside her, the easy charm draining slowly out of his expression, replaced by something sharper, calculating.

"Say it plainly, Doctor," he said. "For all our sakes."

"There is no scenario in standard genetics where this is a mistake," Dr. Tanaka said quietly, looking at Vesper first, an almost apologetic glance, before she finished. "Orion is biologically connected to both of your families. At the same time. In ways I cannot yet explain."

"Then explain it," Darius said, very quietly, "because right now, Doctor, you're telling me something that shouldn't be able to exist."

Dr. Tanaka didn't answer. She didn't need to. The look on her face already had.
