Chapter 1

LIORA'S POV

The night smelled like smoke and destiny.

Pinewood burned in sacred braziers, the scent thick and sweet as it curled into the sky. The entire pack had gathered in the clearing, dressed in ceremonial black and silver. Their whispers rolled like distant thunder, heavy with anticipation.

For me.

For us.

For the mating.

The Blood Moon hung low above the trees, swollen and red, casting a crimson glow over the clearing. Its light washed over my skin, over the white ceremonial dress I had sewn with my own hands. I had stitched silver thread into the hemline-tiny crescent moons.

I wanted to look worthy tonight.

My palms were damp. My heart pounded so hard I could feel it in my throat. Across the clearing stood Alpha Kael.

My mate.

Tall. Unmovable. Crowned in shadow and moonlight.

He wore the traditional Alpha armor-dark leather fitted to his powerful frame, the Nightfall crest embossed over his chest. He looked like war given human form.

But when his eyes found mine-

The world softened.

The bond between us stirred, warm and alive, a thread pulling tight between my ribs and his. I felt it every time he was near. A quiet hum beneath my skin.

He was mine.

I was his.

That was how it was supposed to be.

The High Elder lifted his staff. The murmurs quieted.

"Tonight, beneath the witness of the Blood Moon, Alpha Kael will claim his fated mate and mark his Luna."

A tremor of excitement moved through the pack.

My lungs forgot how to work.

Kael began walking toward me.

Each step was slow. Deliberate.

The earth seemed to shift with his weight. His boots crushed the fallen leaves, the sound loud in the hush of the clearing.

He stopped in front of me.

Close enough that I could feel his heat.

Close enough that I could smell him-cedarwood, iron, and something uniquely his.

My wolf stirred inside me, shy but eager.

He's here.

He's choosing us.

I lifted my chin.

His face was unreadable.

"Kael," I whispered, barely audible.

His jaw flexed.

For a second-just one second-I saw something flicker in his eyes.

Pain.

Then it was gone.

He stepped back.

Not forward.

Back.

The movement was small.

But it felt like falling through ice.

A ripple of confusion passed through the pack.

The bond inside me tightened.

"Alpha?" the Elder prompted gently.

Kael's voice when it came was steady.

Cold.

Sharp enough to cut bone.

"I, Alpha Kael of the Nightfall Pack..."

He paused.

My breath caught.

"...reject you."

The word struck my chest like a physical blow.

Reject.

The sacred word that should never exist between fated mates.

A ringing filled my ears. The world tilted sideways.

I waited for laughter.

For someone to say it was a mistake.

For him to correct himself.

He didn't.

"I reject you as my mate," he continued, louder now so every wolf could hear. "And I deny you the position of Luna."

Gasps broke the silence.

I felt it then.

The bond between us twisting violently. Not snapping-no, that would have been mercy.

It twisted.

Like something being strangled.

My knees trembled.

But I refused to fall.

"Why?" My voice cracked. I hated that it did.

His gaze met mine.

Empty.

"You are not fit to be my Luna."

Each word was measured.

Precise.

Public.

"You lack strength. You lack lineage. You lack the power required to stand beside me."

The humiliation was worse than the rejection.

Because he wasn't just casting me aside.

He was dismantling me.

In front of everyone.

A whisper started behind me.

Weak.

Not Alpha blood.

We always knew.

I felt their eyes crawling over me. Measuring. Judging. Confirming what they already believed.

I swallowed hard.

"I am your fated mate," I said softly.

It was not defiance.

It was a plea.

His expression hardened.

"Fate makes mistakes."

And then-

He turned away from me.

Turned.

As if I were already forgotten.

He extended his hand.

From the edge of the clearing, a woman stepped forward.

Selene of the Ironclaw Pack.

Blonde hair braided in gold wire. Confidence in every stride. Political strength embodied.

"She will stand beside me as my chosen Luna," Kael declared.

Chosen.

Not fated.

The pack bowed.

One by one.

The sound of knees hitting earth echoed like gunfire.

No one looked at me.

I stood there alone.

Still standing.

Still breathing.

Even though I felt like my ribs had collapsed inward.

I didn't cry.

Not in front of them.

I would not give them that.

I turned slowly and walked through the parted crowd.

No one touched me.

No one stopped me.

The night air felt colder with every step away from the firelight.

By the time I reached the forest line, the first tear fell.

Then another.

Then I was running.

Branches clawed at my arms. Thorns tore through the delicate fabric of my dress. The silver stitching caught on bark and ripped.

I didn't stop.

I didn't think.

I ran until my lungs burned and my legs gave out.

I collapsed against the trunk of an ancient oak.

And then I broke.

The sob that tore out of me didn't sound human.

It sounded wounded.

I pressed my hand to my chest.

The bond was still there.

Still alive.

Still burning.

Why didn't it break?

Why do I still feel him?

A growl answered.

Low.

Resonant.

Not from the forest.

From inside me.

Heat flooded my veins.

My vision blurred.

The Blood Moon above flickered-

And slowly, impossibly-

It shifted.

From red.

To silver.

Pain exploded through my body. My spine arched as something ancient forced its way free. Bones cracked. Skin burned.

I screamed-

But the sound that left me was not a scream.

It was a howl.

Deep.

Royal.

Terrifying.

When the shift finished, I stood on four powerful legs.

Taller.

Stronger.

Silver fur shimmered under moonlight.

Markings glowed faintly along my spine like living runes.

I looked into the river's reflection-

And I did not see the broken girl he rejected.

I saw something they should have feared.

A voice echoed inside my mind.

You were never meant to kneel.

Far away-

Across distance and trees-

The bond flared violently.

And I felt him drop to his knees. -
