Chapter 2

I stood frozen in the clearing, Marcus and Rachel's words washing over me like ice water. Not an apology. Not an explanation. Just a demand that I lie to preserve their reputation.

And in that moment, everything changed.

*We don't deserve this,* Selene growled within me, her rage and pain vibrating through our shared consciousness.

I lifted my chin, meeting Rachel's cold stare. "I need time to process this," I said, my voice steadier than I felt. Without waiting for their response, I turned and walked away, Selene's dignity keeping my steps measured despite the urge to run.

The journey back to our quarters—Marcus's and mine—passed in a blur. My mind replayed the image of their wolves entwined, the casual cruelty of their demand. The sacred Moon Run, meant to celebrate our bond, had instead exposed its hollowness.

I pushed open the door to our room, the ceremonial attire I'd laid out earlier now a mockery of my hopes. The matching blue tunics with silver embroidery caught the afternoon light, and I swept them off the bed with one angry motion.

"How could he?" I whispered, fingers automatically finding my moonstone pendant. "How long has this been happening?"

*Search,* Selene urged. *We deserve answers.*

I hesitated only a moment before moving to Marcus's side of our shared closet. My hands trembled slightly as I pushed aside his neatly arranged clothes, reaching for the carved wooden box he kept his personal items in.

The box opened easily—he'd never bothered hiding it from me. Trust, I'd thought. Now I recognized it as arrogance.

At first, I saw only the expected: a few family mementos, some official pack documents. But as I lifted these, something caught the light beneath them—something that didn't belong.

An obsidian claw pendant on a leather cord.

My breath caught. I knew what this was—Rachel's marking token. The physical symbol exchanged during the intimate ritual that preceded a formal mating ceremony.

I held it up, the black stone absorbing rather than reflecting the light. Cold and dark, like the betrayal it represented.

*He accepted her marking ritual,* Selene whispered, horrified. *While bound to us.*

The depth of the deception staggered me. This wasn't a momentary lapse or recent development. The marking ritual was sacred, intimate—a commitment that took months of preparation.

I clutched the pendant so tightly the edges cut into my palm. All those nights he'd been "working late" with his Alpha. All those pack hunts he'd refused to join me for. The marking ceremony he'd always found excuses to postpone with me.

The door opened behind me.

"What are you doing?" Marcus's voice was sharp, accusatory.

I turned slowly, holding up the obsidian claw. "I think I should be asking you that question."

His eyes narrowed, but I noticed he made no move to deny or explain. No guilt shadowed his features, no remorse softened his stance.

"How long?" I asked, my voice surprisingly calm.

"Does it matter?" He stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. Through our mate bond, I reached for Titan, his wolf, but found only cold distance where once there had been warmth.

"It matters to me," I said. "It should matter to you. The Moon Goddess blessed us with a fated bond, Marcus."

He shrugged, the casual gesture more painful than any angry outburst could have been. "Rachel and I have history. She's my Alpha. It makes sense for us to be together."

"And what about our bond? What about fate?"

"Fate doesn't run packs," he said coldly. "Power does. Rachel is an Alpha. You're..." He gestured dismissively. "You're just a Beta female."

Selene snarled within me, and for a moment, I nearly let my Alpha aura flare in response. Years of carefully concealing my true nature held me back, but just barely.

"I want a formal rejection ceremony," I said instead. "Tonight. At the Sacred Moon Grove."

Something flickered in his eyes—surprise, perhaps, that I wasn't begging him to reconsider. "Fine. Midnight. I'll be there."

He turned to leave, but I called after him, "Marcus."

He paused, looking back.

I held up the obsidian claw. "You forgot something."

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his features as I tossed the pendant to him. He caught it reflexively, then left without another word.

As the door closed behind him, I sank onto the edge of the bed, the full weight of what had happened—what was still to come—settling over me. The rejection ceremony would sever our bond permanently, a painful process that would leave both of us weakened for a time.

But as I stroked my moonstone pendant, drawing strength from its cool touch, I realized something was shifting within me. The pain was still there, raw and throbbing, but beneath it stirred something else.

Selene's voice was iron in my mind: *He has no idea who he's rejecting.*

And for the first time since I'd seen Marcus and Rachel together in the clearing, I felt the faintest smile touch my lips.

No. He truly didn't.
