Chapter 2

The days following Kyle's announcement blurred together in a haze of humiliation and confusion. What struck me most wasn't just the whispers that followed me through the pack house corridors, but how quickly everything I'd known for eight years began to unravel.

It started with small things. Pack members who used to seek my counsel on disputes now approached Naomi instead, their heads bowed respectfully as they asked her opinion on matters that had always been Luna territory. I watched from the kitchen window as elderly Mrs. Henderson, who'd helped me plan countless pack celebrations, bent her gray head toward Naomi's golden one, asking about arrangements for the upcoming harvest festival.

"She's carrying the future Alpha," I heard someone whisper as I passed the training grounds. "The Moon Goddess has blessed her with what the Luna couldn't provide in eight years."

Eight years. The number haunted me. Eight years of trying, of hoping, of monthly disappointments that Kyle and I had weathered together. Now those private struggles felt like public failures, evidence of my inadequacy broadcast to every pack member who looked at Naomi's still-flat stomach with reverence.

The worst part was Kyle himself. My mate, who used to discuss every pack decision with me over morning coffee, now made choices without consulting me at all. When I tried to approach him about Naomi's growing influence, his storm-gray eyes would flash with something that made my wolf whimper and retreat.

"You need to accept this, Ivy," he said one evening, not looking up from the pack financial reports spread across his desk. "Naomi is carrying my heir. The pack needs to respect that."

"And what about respecting me?" The words slipped out before I could stop them. "I'm still your Luna. I'm still your mate."

Kyle's jaw tightened, and when he finally looked at me, his expression was cold in a way that made my chest ache. "Are you questioning my decisions as Alpha?"

The Alpha tone crept into his voice – that commanding, dominant inflection that could force submission from any pack member. He'd never used it on me before. Never. In eight years of arguments, disagreements, and heated discussions, Kyle had always spoken to me as his equal, his partner, his Luna.

I took a step back, my wolf instinctively responding to the dominance in his voice even as my human side reeled from the betrayal. "Kyle, I'm not—"

"Good." He turned back to his papers, dismissing me like I was just another pack member who'd overstepped. "Because I have enough to deal with without you adding to the stress."

I left his office with my hands shaking and my heart hammering against my ribs. In the hallway, I nearly collided with Naomi, who was carrying a small bottle of pills.

"Oh, Luna Ivy," she said, her voice soft and apologetic. "I was just bringing Kyle his medication. He's been having such trouble with his wolf lately – the violent urges, you know. The pack doctor says these special suppressants should help him maintain control."

Medication. Kyle had never mentioned needing medication for wolf control. If anything, his wolf had always been remarkably stable, a source of strength rather than volatility.

"What kind of medication?" I asked, trying to keep my voice casual.

Naomi's doe-brown eyes widened with what looked like concern. "Oh, I probably shouldn't have said anything. Kyle doesn't like to worry you with pack medical matters. But between you and me," she lowered her voice conspiratorially, "he's been so protective of me and the baby. Sometimes his instincts get... overwhelming. The doctor thought it best to help him manage those impulses."

She slipped past me into Kyle's office, and I heard his voice soften in greeting – the warm tone he used to reserve for me. Through the partially open door, I watched him accept the pills without question, his fingers brushing Naomi's as she handed him the bottle.

That night, I lay awake staring at the ceiling while Kyle slept beside me, his body turned away from mine. We hadn't touched in weeks, hadn't made love since before his trip to the Northern Territories. The mate bond that should have thrummed with connection felt muted, distant, like trying to hear a conversation through thick glass.

The next morning brought a wave of nausea so intense I barely made it to the bathroom before losing what little I'd managed to eat for breakfast. As I knelt on the cold tile floor, gasping and shaking, a wild hope bloomed in my chest.

Three days later, pack healer Marcus Stone confirmed what I'd hardly dared to believe.

"Congratulations, Luna," he said, his weathered face creasing into a genuine smile. "You're carrying the Alpha's child."

The future Alpha heir. After eight years, my body had finally done what everyone expected of a Luna. What Kyle needed from me. What might save our crumbling mate bond and restore my place in the pack.

I pressed my hands to my still-flat stomach, imagining the tiny life growing inside me. This child would change everything. Kyle would remember why the Moon Goddess had fated us together. The pack would see that I wasn't the barren failure they'd begun to whisper about.

Tonight, I decided. Tonight I would surprise Kyle with the news, create the romantic evening we'd been missing, and watch his face light up with the joy and love I remembered from our early years together.

This baby would save us. It had to.
