Chapter 2

The morning mist clung to the forest floor like secrets refusing to be told as I made my way through the dense undergrowth, my heart hammering a rhythm that matched my careful footsteps. The hunting grounds of the Lycan King stretched before me—acres of pristine wilderness where only the most elite were permitted to track their prey.

I shouldn't be here. But then again, I'd been doing a lot of things lately that I shouldn't.

The small vial tucked against my ribs felt warm through the thin fabric of my hunting attire—a carefully crafted blend of jasmine, sandalwood, and something far more dangerous. My family's herbal knowledge had always been our greatest asset, but I'd never used it quite like this before. The pheromone mixture was subtle, designed to enhance rather than overwhelm, to draw rather than repel. If my calculations were correct, it would make any Alpha more... receptive to my presence.

The sound of running water led me deeper into the woods, where I knew the King often came to clean his kills. My pulse quickened as I caught the metallic scent of fresh blood on the wind, mixed with something else—something wild and commanding that made my Omega instincts both recoil and yearn.

There.

Through the trees, I spotted him.

Daemon Blackthorne knelt beside a massive stag, his dark hair falling across his forehead as he worked with practiced efficiency. Even in simple hunting leathers, he commanded attention—broad shoulders moving with fluid grace, his hands sure and steady as he field-dressed his prize. Blood stained his forearms, and something primal in me responded to the sight of this apex predator in his element.

I took a steadying breath, letting the pheromone blend work its subtle magic as I stepped deliberately on a dry branch.

The snap echoed through the clearing like a gunshot.

Daemon's head snapped up, his dark eyes finding mine instantly. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then a slow smile spread across his face—dangerous, amused, and far too knowing.

"Well, well," he said, his voice carrying that same commanding tone that had silenced an entire ballroom. "If it isn't my mysterious dance partner. Tell me, do you make a habit of trespassing on royal hunting grounds, or am I simply that irresistible?"

I stepped into the clearing, letting vulnerability creep into my posture—shoulders slightly hunched, eyes downcast, hands clasped before me. "I'm sorry, Your Majesty. I didn't mean to intrude. I was just... walking. Trying to clear my head after last night."

"Ah yes, last night." He stood slowly, wiping his bloodied hands on a cloth with deliberate care. "Quite the performance. Though I suspect there was more truth in your words than theater."

My breath caught. "I don't know what you mean."

"Don't you?" He moved closer, and I caught his scent—pine, leather, and something darker that made my pulse race. "The way you looked at Marcus. The pain in your voice when you spoke of your family. That wasn't acting, little Omega."

The endearment should have insulted me. Instead, it sent heat spiraling through my chest. "Does it matter? What's done is done."

"Is it?" His eyes studied my face with an intensity that made me feel exposed. "Because from where I stand, it looks like you're just getting started."

I lifted my chin, meeting his gaze directly. "Maybe I am. Maybe I'm tired of being the victim in everyone else's story."

Something shifted in his expression—approval, perhaps, or recognition. "Good. Victims are boring. But survivors..." His smile turned predatory. "Survivors are far more interesting."

The next three days passed in a blur of calculated encounters and careful observation. I learned Daemon's patterns, his preferences, the subtle tells that revealed his moods. He was a creature of habit, despite his reputation for unpredictability—morning hunts, afternoon meetings, evening visits to his exclusive gentleman's club.

The Crimson Moon was the sort of establishment that existed in whispered rumors and carefully guarded secrets. Tucked away in the most expensive district of the capital, it catered to those with power, money, and a taste for discretion. The kind of place where deals were struck over aged whiskey and secrets were traded like currency.

The doorman was a grizzled Beta with scars across his knuckles and eyes that had seen too much. I approached him with my most innocent smile, the pheromone blend working its subtle magic as I leaned close.

"I'm supposed to meet someone inside," I said softly, letting my fingers brush against his arm. "But I seem to have forgotten the password."

His pupils dilated slightly, and I saw the moment his resistance crumbled. "Bloodmoon," he murmured, stepping aside to let me pass.

The interior was all dark wood and leather, heavy curtains blocking out the outside world. Cigar smoke hung in the air like incense, and the low murmur of masculine voices created an atmosphere of barely contained power. I moved through the room like I belonged there, my stolen evening dress—black silk that hugged every curve—drawing appreciative glances from the patrons.

Daemon's private table sat in the far corner, elevated slightly above the main floor. It was empty, but the crystal tumbler and half-full bottle of Macallan 25 told me he'd be back soon. I slid into the chair opposite his usual spot and poured myself a generous measure of his whiskey.

The liquid burned like liquid gold down my throat, warming me from the inside out. I was on my second sip when his scent reached me—pine and danger and something uniquely him.

"You know," his voice came from directly behind me, "most people ask permission before drinking a man's whiskey."

I didn't turn around. "Most people aren't me."

His low chuckle sent shivers down my spine. "No, they certainly aren't." He moved around the table and settled into his chair with fluid grace, his dark eyes never leaving mine. "Tell me, how did you get past security? The Crimson Moon isn't exactly known for its open-door policy."

I took another sip of whiskey, savoring both the burn and the way his eyes tracked the movement of my lips. "I can be very persuasive when I want to be."

"I'm beginning to see that." He poured himself a drink, his movements deliberate and controlled. "The question is, what do you want from me?"

The directness of the question caught me off guard, but I recovered quickly. "What makes you think I want anything?"

"Because everyone wants something from a king. The only variable is whether they're honest about it."

I leaned forward slightly, letting the silk of my dress catch the lamplight. "Maybe I just enjoy good whiskey and better company."

"And maybe I'm a celibate monk." His smile was sharp as a blade. "Try again."

For a moment, I considered maintaining the pretense. Then I thought of Leo's face the last time I'd seen him, of the way Marcus had smiled as he signed the exile orders, of the ashes of my family's apothecary still scattered on the wind.

"You want honesty?" I set down my glass with deliberate care. "Fine. I want justice. I want the man who destroyed my family to understand what it feels like to lose everything. And I want him to know it was me who took it from him."

Daemon's eyes darkened with something that might have been approval. "Now that's more like it. Tell me about this destruction. Leave nothing out."

So I did. I told him about the night Marcus came to our apothecary with accusations of contaminated herbs, how he'd planted evidence while his men searched our home. I described the trial that was nothing more than theater, the way Isabella had watched from the gallery with cold satisfaction as my siblings were sentenced to exile.

"Leo was only sixteen," I whispered, my voice breaking despite my efforts to stay composed. "Elara barely fourteen. They were sent to the borderlands with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Do you know what happens to children alone in rogue territory?"

Daemon's jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "I can imagine."

"Can you? Because I live with those images every day. Every night, I wonder if they're still alive, if they're safe, if they hate me for not being strong enough to protect them." I met his gaze steadily. "Marcus took everything from me because I was inconvenient. Because his ambition mattered more than our bond, more than innocent lives. So yes, Your Majesty, I want something from you. I want him to burn."
