Chapter 1

The early morning light filtered through the gauzy curtains of my family's bridal chamber, casting a soft glow over the white ceremonial gown that hung waiting for me. Today was supposed to be the beginning of my forever—the day Brandon Hayes, future Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack, would officially claim me as his Luna before our pack and the Moon Goddess herself.

My fingers trembled as I smoothed the delicate fabric of the dress against my body. The sweet, heady scent of rose-herb incense filled the room, the traditional fragrance meant to bless a mate bonding ceremony. I inhaled deeply, letting the aroma calm my racing heart.

"Are you ready?" Silver, my wolf, whispered in my mind, her excitement palpable.

"I've been ready my whole life," I murmured back, reaching for the mate mark pendant Brandon had given me six months ago when he'd asked me to be his Luna. The silver crescent moon caught the light as I fastened it around my neck, the cool metal settling against my collarbone like a promise.

I studied my reflection in the mirror. The white dress hugged my curves before flowing gracefully to the floor, the traditional silver embroidery along the neckline symbolizing the eternal bond between mates. My dark hair was swept up, revealing the vulnerable curve of my neck where Brandon would place his mark today.

"You look beautiful," my mother said from the doorway, her eyes glistening with tears. "The perfect Luna."

Pride swelled in my chest. I'd spent my entire life preparing for this role—to stand beside Brandon, to support him, to love him. The fact that we were fated mates only made it more perfect. The Moon Goddess herself had chosen us for each other.

"It's time," my father said, appearing behind my mother. Something flickered across his face—concern? But it vanished so quickly I convinced myself I'd imagined it.

The walk to the pack house was a blur of well-wishes and admiring glances. Inside, the grand ceremonial hall had been transformed with silver streamers and white moonflowers. The sweet scent of the blossoms mingled with the woodsy aroma of so many wolves gathered in one place. At the far end stood a raised altar, where the Alpha and his son—my Brandon—waited.

The congregation hushed as I took my first step down the aisle. Silver hummed with anticipation inside me, her presence warm and comforting.

"This is it," she whispered. "Our destiny."

I kept my eyes fixed on Brandon. He looked so handsome in his ceremonial black suit, the future Alpha in all his glory. But something in his stance seemed rigid, his eyes not quite meeting mine. A tiny flutter of unease rippled through me, but I pushed it aside. Pre-ceremony nerves, nothing more.

When I reached the altar, I extended my hand, expecting Brandon to take it. Instead, he stepped back, creating a distance between us that felt like a physical blow.

"Brandon?" I whispered, confusion making my voice waver.

That's when I noticed her. Amanda Foster, standing just behind Brandon, her hand resting protectively over the slight swell of her belly. My stomach dropped as the pieces clicked into place.

"I have an announcement to make," Brandon's voice rang out, strong and clear with his Alpha tone. The pack fell silent, all eyes on us. "There has been a change of plans."

Without warning, his fingers reached for my throat. For one wild moment, I thought he might actually hurt me, but instead, he unclasped the mate mark pendant from around my neck. The silver chain slid away, leaving my skin cold and exposed.

"Amanda Foster deserves the title of Luna," he declared, turning to place MY pendant around HER neck. "She carries the future of our pack."

The world tilted sideways. This couldn't be happening. Not here, not now, not in front of everyone I knew.

"Brandon, please," I whispered, but he silenced me with a look of cold determination.

"I, Brandon Hayes, future Alpha of the Silvercrest Pack, reject you, Sophia Mitchell, as my mate."

The formal words of rejection sliced through me like physical pain. Silver howled in agony inside my mind, the sound so raw and wounded it felt like my soul was being torn apart. The mate bond that had connected us since we were teenagers snapped with an almost audible crack, leaving a hollow emptiness where warmth had once been.

Gasps erupted throughout the hall. Through a haze of tears, I caught Amanda's triumphant smirk as Brandon pulled her close, his hand possessively covering hers over her pregnant belly.

My legs gave way beneath me, and I staggered backward, away from the altar, away from the man who had just shattered my world. The whispers started immediately—pitying, shocked, cruel. The walk back down the aisle felt endless, each step a struggle as the weight of public humiliation crushed down on me.

I was no longer a future Luna. I was the rejected mate. The unwanted one.

As the pack house doors closed behind me, cutting off the murmurs and stares, one thought crystallized through my pain: Where do I go now?
