Chapter 2

I couldn't breathe. The weight of a hundred pitying eyes pressed against my chest as I retreated from the grand hall, my heels clicking against the polished floors with a rhythm that matched my racing heartbeat. The kitchen—the one place I could always find solace in the scent of cinnamon and freshly baked bread—became my sanctuary.

"Just need to check the refreshments," I muttered to no one in particular as I pushed through the swinging doors.

The kitchen staff paused in their hurried preparations, their eyes darting away from mine with that same uncomfortable sympathy I'd seen in the main hall.

"Luna Aurelia," Chef Marta nodded respectfully, "we're just putting the finishing touches on the anniversary cake."

"Thank you," I managed, forcing a smile that felt like broken glass cutting into my cheeks. "I'll just... double-check the champagne flutes."

I busied myself with the crystal glasses, trying to ignore the whispers that followed me like shadows.

"Poor thing," a female voice—Delta Sarah from the laundry division—muttered just loud enough for my enhanced hearing to catch. "She really had no idea?"

"I heard everyone knew about Alpha Graham's real mate," another voice replied—Gamma Mike's daughter, Tessa. "They say Carly's been living in the east wing for months."

My fingers tightened around the delicate stem of a champagne flute.

"Poor Luna Aurelia," Sarah continued, oblivious to my presence. "Living in denial all this time while everyone else knew the truth."

The glass nearly slipped from my grip. Everyone knew? The room spun around me as I carefully set down the flute and gripped the counter for support.

"How could she not know?" Tessa wondered aloud. "I mean, the Alpha hasn't even tried to hide it. My mom says she's seen them together at pack meetings for ages."

I slipped out before they could notice me, my chest constricting with each step. Eight years. Eight years of humiliation while everyone watched in silence.

---

"Explain yourself." My voice came out steadier than I expected as I pushed open Graham's office door without knocking.

He looked up from his desk, irritation flashing across his handsome features before settling into that cold mask I'd grown accustomed to over the years.

"Aurelia." He didn't stand—a deliberate show of disrespect. "I assume you've met Carly and my son."

"Your son?" The words tasted bitter. "You can't possibly expect me to believe that child is yours."

Graham leaned back in his chair, studying me with detached curiosity, as if I were some mildly interesting specimen under glass.

"The pack needs a real heir, not a barren Luna," he said flatly. "It's time you accepted reality."

The words hit like physical blows. Barren. The accusation hung in the air between us.

"I am your mate," I reminded him, hating the tremor that crept into my voice. "Your Luna. We've been bonded for eight years."

"And in eight years, you've failed to produce an heir." His eyes were cold, calculating. "What use is a Luna who cannot secure the pack's future?"

I stepped closer, searching his face for any trace of the man I thought I'd mated. "Is that all I am to you? A breeding vessel?"

"You're whatever I say you are." He stood now, towering over me, his Alpha aura pressing down like a physical weight. "And right now, you're a liability. Accept reality gracefully, Aurelia. For the good of the pack's reputation."

---

The medical archives were kept in the basement of the pack house—a room I'd organized myself during my third year as Luna. Graham had never bothered to learn the system, preferring to leave the "menial tasks" to me.

Now, alone among the filing cabinets, I pulled out drawer after drawer, searching for records from our early mating years. My fingers trembled as I flipped through folders, the scent of old paper and dust filling my nostrils.

"Where are you..." I whispered to myself.

Then I found it—a thick folder labeled "Alpha Medical History—Confidential."

Inside were dozens of reports from Dr. Elena Hartwell, our pack healer for over thirty years. I flipped past routine checkups until a document from three years into our mating caught my eye.

"Genetic Analysis—Alpha Graham Reynolds," the header read.

My heart pounded as I scanned the contents, Dr. Hartwell's neat handwriting detailing a condition so rare it affected less than one percent of werewolves: a genetic deficiency that prevented sperm production.

"Subject exhibits classic symptoms of Wolf Gene Deficiency Syndrome," I read aloud, my voice barely a whisper. "Complete sterility confirmed through multiple tests."

The date on the report was exactly three years after our mating ceremony.

I sank to the floor, the document clutched in my shaking hands.

He couldn't have children. He never could.

Which meant that little boy upstairs—the one wearing the Reynolds pack emblem and calling Graham "Papa"—was impossible.
