Chapter 3

The night wrapped around me like a cloak as I slipped out of the pack house, my footsteps silent against the gravel driveway. The rejection papers burned in my pocket—a physical reminder of Robert's betrayal. I couldn't stay there, not with those walls closing in on me, suffocating me with forty years of memories that now felt like elaborate lies.

My destination was clear: Jeremiah Blackwood's office on the edge of our territory. The old werewolf had been my family's attorney long before I became Luna of the Moonstone Pack. If anyone knew what options I had, it would be him.

"Grace," he said when I appeared at his door, surprise evident in his weathered face. He hadn't called me by my first name in decades—always "Luna Sullivan" in public. "What brings you here at this hour?"

I placed the rejection papers on his desk. "I need to know what's mine, Jeremiah. What's truly mine, not what Robert has allowed me to have."

Understanding dawned in his eyes as he scanned the documents. Without a word, he moved to an ancient filing cabinet and withdrew a folder yellowed with age.

"Your grandmother was a forward-thinking woman," he said, spreading out a map marked with territorial boundaries. "This land on the Olympic Peninsula—it's yours. Not the Moonstone Pack's, not Robert's. Yours by bloodright, held in trust since before your mating."

My fingers traced the outline of the territory—smaller than the Moonstone lands, but substantial. Wild. Independent.

"He can't touch it," Jeremiah confirmed, answering my unspoken question. "Not even with a rejection. Your grandmother made certain of that."

For the first time since discovering Robert's betrayal, I felt something other than pain. A spark of possibility, of freedom.

*We have a place to go*, Selene whispered inside me. *Our own land.*

Back at the pack house, I moved with quiet purpose through my private quarters. From a hidden safe behind my grandmother's portrait, I withdrew documents, account information, and emergency funds I'd maintained separately throughout my marriage—a precaution my mother had insisted upon that I'd never thought I'd need.

My fingers moved swiftly across my laptop keyboard, transferring my personal savings—accumulated from my Luna duties at inter-pack events—into an account Robert couldn't access. I withdrew enough cash to sustain me and whatever pack I might build in the coming weeks.

*He thought you helpless without him*, Selene growled with satisfaction. *He never knew your strength.*

As dawn broke over the Moonstone territory, I slipped away from the silent pack house to a hidden glade deep in the forest. This place had always been my sanctuary—the one spot where I came to center myself when pack duties became overwhelming.

I knelt on the moss-covered ground, feeling the earth beneath my palms. The weakness that had plagued me for weeks still lingered, but something stronger was fighting through it—the dormant Alpha power that had surged at the Vancouver gathering.

"Selene," I whispered my wolf's name aloud for the first time in years. "I need you now."

The transformation came easier than it had in decades. My bones shifted, my skin giving way to silver fur that gleamed in the early morning light. When it was complete, I stood on four paws, larger than I'd ever been in wolf form.

*We were never meant to be just a Luna*, Selene's voice resonated through our shared consciousness. *We have Alpha blood. It's time to reclaim what's ours.*

I ran through the forest, feeling a freedom I hadn't experienced since before my mating. My wolf was stronger than she had been in years, fighting against whatever illness had been weakening us. With each stride, each breath of forest air, I felt more of my true self returning.

As the sun climbed higher, I shifted back and dressed in the clothes I'd hidden. There was one more task before I could leave—finding allies who would follow me not out of obligation to an Alpha male, but out of choice.

I knew exactly where to start.

The clearing where Caleb Vance made his temporary camp was bathed in moonlight when I found him that evening. The rogue wolf tensed at my approach, recognition and wariness battling in his eyes.

"Luna Sullivan," he said cautiously, rising to his feet. "You're far from your pack house."

"Just Grace now," I replied, my voice steady. "And soon to be Alpha of my own territory."

Confusion crossed his features, followed by understanding as he caught the scent of my changing status—no longer bearing the full mark of Robert's mate bond.

"You once showed me mercy when Robert would have had me killed for trespassing," he said slowly. "You fed me and treated my wounds before sending me away."

I nodded, remembering the young wolf who had accidentally crossed into our territory five years ago. Robert had wanted to make an example of him. I had secretly defied my Alpha to help him escape.

"I'm building something new," I told him, holding his gaze. "A pack where strength doesn't come from dominance but from loyalty freely given. I need a Beta I can trust."

Caleb studied me for a long moment before dropping to one knee, head bowed in a gesture of allegiance that meant more than any forced submission ever could.

"My life is yours, Alpha Grace," he said, using the title that sent a shock of rightness through my entire being. "Where you lead, I will follow."

As he raised his head, I saw something I hadn't expected in his eyes—not just loyalty, but hope. And I realized that in reclaiming my own power, I might be offering the same chance to others who had been cast aside.

My new pack was beginning to form, one loyal wolf at a time.
