Chapter 2

I stood across from Marcus Blake in the flickering light of the neutral council's campfire. The shadows danced across his face, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw and the intensity in his dark eyes. My wolf was still whimpering inside me, raw from Ryan's rejection, but she fell silent as Marcus's gaze locked with mine.

"Why?" I asked, my voice steadier than I expected. "Why would you want a rejected Luna?"

The question had been burning inside me since he'd approached me at the abandoned ceremony. The humiliation of that moment still clung to me like a second skin, making me hyperaware of every pitying glance from the Beta Council members keeping watch at the perimeter.

"I recognize value where others are blind," Marcus replied, his deep voice carrying easily across the small space between us. No platitudes, no false sympathy—just a simple statement that made my spine straighten.

"My value to the Silverpine Pack didn't stop Ryan from walking away," I countered, unable to keep the bitterness from my tone.

Marcus's eyes flashed, something primal and protective crossing his features before he controlled it. "Then Ryan is a greater fool than I already believed him to be."

My wolf bristled at his words, not in anger but in a strange sort of recognition. She'd been so focused on Ryan for so long that this new attention felt foreign, dangerous even.

"I'll hear your terms," I said finally, crossing my arms over my chest. The ceremonial gown I still wore felt like a mockery now, the silver pine needles catching the firelight. "But know that I'm not some desperate she-wolf who will accept any offer."

A smile—small but genuine—curved Marcus's lips. "I would expect nothing less, Luna Olivia."

He laid out his proposition with the precision of a military commander: a contract mating, a political alliance that would give me the Luna position I deserved while strengthening his pack against the Lycan Council's increasingly restrictive policies. Half of his territory would be under my jurisdiction. My strategic mind would be valued, my decisions respected.

"And what do you get from this arrangement?" I asked, eyes narrowed.

"A powerful Luna, a united front against our enemies, and the satisfaction of watching Ryan Thompson realize exactly what he threw away." The last part was delivered with a cold smile that sent a shiver down my spine—not of fear, but of something dangerously close to anticipation.

The Beta Council clearing looked ethereal under the waxing moon. Ancient stones formed a small circle, their rune-carved surfaces gleaming silver in the moonlight. This was not the grand ceremony I had prepared for with Ryan—no pack witnesses, no elaborate decorations, just the necessary officials and the sacred elements.

I had changed from my abandoned ceremonial gown into a simple white dress provided by one of the Beta Council members. My hair, once elaborately braided with silver threads, now hung loose around my shoulders.

Marcus waited for me at the center of the stone circle, his tall frame outlined against the night sky. He wore traditional Alpha ceremonial attire—dark pants and an open vest that displayed the pack symbol tattooed over his heart. The Shadowmoon Pack's crescent moon and mountain silhouette was stark against his tanned skin.

The head Beta began the ceremony, her words brief and to the point. This was a contract mating, not a fated bond, and the ritual reflected that pragmatic reality. No flowery invocations, no romantic pledges—just an exchange of promises centered on loyalty, territory, and mutual benefit.

When the time came for the marking, Marcus stepped closer. His scent—pine and mountain air with an undertone of something wild—enveloped me. He leaned down, his breath warm against my neck.

"May I?" he asked quietly, a courtesy I hadn't expected.

I nodded, tilting my head to expose my neck in the traditional gesture of submission. But as his fangs grazed my skin, a jolt of electricity shot through me, making me gasp. Marcus stiffened, his hands tightening on my shoulders. Something unexpected passed between us—a current of connection that neither of us had anticipated.

His fangs pressed deeper, breaking the skin and completing the mark. The sensation wasn't painful but intense, like a circuit closing. My wolf, who had been wary and withdrawn, suddenly pushed forward, curious and alert.

We completed the ceremony by etching our names into a stone tablet, binding our contract in the ancient way. As the last rune was carved, I felt a weight settle over me—not oppressive, but solid and real. I was Luna Olivia of the Shadowmoon Pack now.

Three days later, I stood at the edge of what had been my home for most of my life. The Silverpine Pack territory stretched before me, familiar and yet suddenly foreign. Behind me stood Marcus, a respectful distance away, allowing me to face my former pack alone.

They had gathered at Ryan's command—all of them, from the highest-ranking Delta to the youngest pups. Ryan himself stood at the front, his face a mask of disbelief and growing anger as he took in my new mark, visible above the collar of my jacket.

"I've come to address the pack," I announced, my voice carrying across the clearing. Not as Ryan's rejected mate, but as Luna of the Shadowmoon Pack.

"You have no right—" Ryan began, but I cut him off.

"I have every right." My voice was clear, steady—a true Luna voice that commanded attention without needing an Alpha's power behind it. "I have given ten years of my life to this pack. I have built alliances, expanded territories, and cared for each of you as if you were my own family."

I let my gaze sweep over the assembled wolves, meeting the eyes of those who had worked closest with me. "Today, I stand before you as Luna Olivia Blake of the Shadowmoon Pack. Those who wish to follow me are welcome. Those who choose to stay will always have my respect."

The silence that followed was deafening. Then, like a slow-breaking wave, movement rippled through the crowd. Seraphina, our head healer, stepped forward first, crossing the invisible boundary to stand beside me. One by one, all of her healers followed.

Then came the warriors—Damien, who had trained under my strategic guidance; Elena, whose mate I had helped rescue from rogues; Michael, whose pups I had delivered when Seraphina was away. Half of Ryan's fighting force moved to my side.

"Stop!" Ryan roared, his Alpha tone vibrating through the clearing. "I command you to stay!"

But his voice fell flat, his command powerless against their choice. No one moved—neither forward nor back. The lines had been drawn.

I met Ryan's gaze across the divide, saw the dawning horror in his eyes as he realized what he had lost. Not just me, but the heart of his pack. The power he had taken for granted was crumbling before his eyes.

"Goodbye, Ryan," I said softly, then turned my back on Silverpine Pack for the last time.

As we walked away, I felt Marcus's presence beside me, solid and unwavering. I had expected to feel triumph in this moment, or perhaps lingering pain. Instead, I felt something unexpected blooming in my chest—the first fragile tendril of possibility.
