Chapter 5

The package arrived at dawn.

I found it outside my den door when I stepped out to run my morning perimeter check. A leather document case, unmarked, tied with a simple cord. No note. No messenger waiting for acknowledgment.

I knew the scent before I touched it.

Dark cedar and winter storm.

I carried it inside and set it on the table. My hands were steady as I untied the cord and opened the case. A single sheet of parchment lay on top, thick and official, bearing the Silvercrest territorial seal.

A deed.

I read it slowly, twice, making sure I understood what I was seeing.

A mountain range on the far northern edge of Silvercrest territory. Pristine land, untouched by development or pack settlement. The deed was made out in my name. Regina Lawson. Not contingent on any alliance. Not attached to the betrothal accord. Not conditional on anything.

Mine.

There was a note beneath it, written in clean, precise handwriting.

*For your wolf to run whenever she needs solitude.*

I stood there holding the paper and felt something crack open in my chest. Not pain. Something else. Something I didn't have a name for.

I folded the deed carefully and placed it beside the betrothal accord in my evidence file. Then I walked to the window and looked out at the tree line.

I knew he was out there. Running his nightly patrol in that massive black Lycan form, circling the settlement boundary like he'd done every night since I arrived. Never crossing into my space. Never asking for anything.

Just there.

I pressed my palm against the cold glass and stayed there until the sun came up.

I didn't go to him.

But I didn't sleep either.

---

The message came through my encrypted network two days later.

It was from a young Delta warrior named Iris, one of the few Duskridge wolves who still sent me intelligence despite the risk. Her messages were always brief, coded, sent from burner phones that changed weekly.

This one was three sentences.

*Margo commissioned a formal Luna portrait. Ceremonial dress. Duskridge crest. It's hanging in the great hall where yours used to be.*

I read it twice.

Then I set my phone down and stared at the wall.

The portrait had been a gift from the pack on my first anniversary as Luna. I'd sat for it reluctantly, uncomfortable with the formality, but the artist had been kind and the pack had seemed genuinely pleased with the result. It had hung in the great hall for two years.

Now Margo's face looked out from that frame instead.

I picked up my phone and typed a response. *Photograph it if you can. Date and time stamp. Send it encrypted.*

Her reply came within minutes. *Already done.*

The image loaded slowly. Margo in the ceremonial Luna dress I'd worn exactly once. The Duskridge crest behind her. Her expression serene, possessive, triumphant.

I saved the image to my tribunal file.

Then I stood up and walked out of the den.

---

The Silvercrest healing wing was quiet when I arrived.

I'd asked for Sera Vane specifically. Maverick's head Healer. The woman who'd guided me through the first seventy-two hours after the rejection, who'd monitored my vitals and watched my wolf collapse and hadn't asked questions I wasn't ready to answer.

She met me in a private consultation room. Calm. Precise. Her hands steady as she gestured for me to sit.

"What do you need?" she asked.

I'd come intending to ask about bond recovery timelines. About how long it would take for my wolf to regain full strength. About whether the weakness was permanent.

But when I opened my mouth, different words came out.

"How long does it usually take for a rejected wolf to stop responding to their former mate's Alpha tone?"

Sera's expression didn't change, but something shifted in her eyes. A sharpening of focus.

"It varies," she said carefully. "Depending on the strength of the original bond and the severity of the rejection. Why?"

"Kellan's Gamma tried to compel me three days ago," I said. "It didn't work."

Sera went very still.

"At all?" she asked.

"It landed," I said. "I felt the pressure. But it slid off. Like my body didn't recognize his authority anymore."

Sera was quiet for a long moment. Then she stood and crossed to a cabinet, pulling out a small vial of clear liquid.

"I need to test something," she said. "May I?"

I nodded.

She uncapped the vial and held it beneath my nose. "Breathe in. Tell me what you smell."

I inhaled.

The scent was faint, almost imperceptible. Something floral and cold, like winter jasmine.

"Flowers," I said. "Faint."

Sera's jaw tightened. She recapped the vial and set it down.

"That's a Lycan royal bloodline marker," she said quietly. "Concentrated enough that most wolves can't detect it at all. You just identified it clearly."

I stared at her.

"I don't understand," I said.

Sera sat back down across from me. Her hands folded on the table between us.

"Regina," she said carefully. "Has your wolf been responding abnormally since the rejection? Not just weakly. Strangely. As though it's something other than what it should be for a Delta-blood wolf."

I thought about the way my wolf had stirred when Maverick's scent hit me in the clearing. The way Voss's Alpha tone had failed. The way I'd felt something lock into place when I severed the Luna bond, like a mechanism activating that had been dormant my entire life.

"Yes," I said.

Sera leaned forward slightly.

"Has your aura," she asked, "even at its most cracked and diminished, been affecting wolves above your rank in ways that don't make sense?"

I didn't answer.

But my silence was an answer.

Sera exhaled slowly. She reached across the table and placed her hand over mine. Her touch was warm, steady, grounding.

"I need to examine your wolf," she said. "Properly. With Lycan diagnostic tools. Because if what I'm sensing is correct—"

She stopped.

The door to the consultation room opened.

Maverick stood in the doorway.

His eyes went immediately to Sera's hand on mine. Then to my face. Then to Sera.

"The Lycan King is here," he said quietly.

My heart stopped.

"Why?" I asked.

Maverick's gaze held mine. Something flickered in his expression. Not quite fear. Something deeper.

"He says he needs to see you," Maverick said. "Now."

Sera's hand tightened on mine.

And in the silence that followed, I felt it.

A presence. Massive. Ancient. Moving through the Silvercrest compound like a storm front rolling in.

My wolf lifted her head.

And for the first time since the rejection, she didn't just stir.

She rose.
