Chapter 2

I sent the message to Maverick Sterling at two in the morning.

No pleasantries. No explanation of how I got his private contact. Just the facts: forged Luna-consent seal, stolen Moonhaven Grounds, Margo Gomez identified as his former rejected chosen mate. I proposed a strategic alliance. My intelligence on her operation in exchange for his authority before the Lycan Council.

I expected a delay. Political negotiations took time. Lycan Princes didn't respond to unknown she-wolves in the middle of the night.

My phone lit up forty minutes later.

*Name the place. I'll come alone.*

I stared at the screen. One line. No posturing, no conditions, no demand for proof before he committed. Just immediate agreement and a promise of vulnerability — coming alone meant no guards, no display of rank, no witnesses.

My wolf stirred.

It was the first time she'd moved since the rejection. Not a howl or a whimper. Just a faint shift, like something turning over in sleep. The sensation was so unexpected that I pressed my hand against my chest, feeling for her presence the way you'd check a wound to see if it was still bleeding.

She was there. Barely. A flicker of awareness where there'd been nothing but hollow silence.

I looked back at the message. There was nothing in the text itself that should have reached her. Just words on a screen.

I told myself I was imagining things.

I set the meeting for the following night at the neutral clearing on the Duskridge-Silvercrest border and began organizing my evidence files.

---

The clearing was empty when I arrived.

I'd chosen it deliberately — far enough from Duskridge that Kellan's patrols wouldn't catch my scent, close enough to Silvercrest that Maverick wouldn't have to cross contested territory. The moon was three-quarters full. The ground was dry. I positioned myself with my back to the tree line so I could see anyone approaching from the open field.

I wore a high-necked shirt. Then I changed my mind and wore a open collar instead. The dead mark was visible just above my collarbone, the skin around it still faintly discolored where the bond had burned out. If we were negotiating, he needed to see exactly what kind of wolf he was dealing with. A rejected Luna. A broken bond. A she-wolf with nothing left to lose.

I heard him before I saw him.

Footsteps, measured and unhurried, crossing the field from the Silvercrest side. No attempt at stealth. He was announcing his presence, giving me time to prepare.

Maverick Sterling stepped into the clearing alone.

He was taller than I remembered. Broader through the shoulders. He wore dark clothing that blended with the shadows, but his presence was anything but subtle. There was a weight to him — not physical, but something deeper. The kind of authority that didn't need to announce itself because every wolf within range could feel it pressing against their instincts.

He stopped ten feet away.

Then the scent hit me.

Dark cedar and winter storm. It slammed into my senses like a wave breaking over a sea wall, cold and overwhelming and impossibly vivid. My knees almost buckled. I locked them and forced myself to stay upright, but I couldn't stop the sharp inhale or the way my pulse spiked so hard I could feel it in my throat.

My wolf lifted her head.

Not stirred. Not flickered. She rose inside me with a sudden, wrenching urgency I hadn't felt since before the rejection, and she whispered one word that reverberated through my skull like a bell ringing in an empty hall.

*Mate.*

No.

I took half a step back before I could stop myself. My hand flew to the dead mark on my neck, fingers pressing against the cold scar tissue as if I could physically hold the bond in place. But there was no bond. Just ice and emptiness and the ghost of what used to be there.

Maverick went very still.

It wasn't the stillness of surprise. It was the predator's stillness — the kind his wolves probably knew to read as a warning. But his eyes weren't dangerous. They were raw. Stripped of every layer of royal composure and Lycan authority, just a man looking at something he'd been waiting for and didn't know if he was allowed to reach for.

"I've known for five years," he said quietly.

His voice was low, even, but it carried in the silent clearing like he'd spoken directly into my ear.

"The summit," he continued. "The dance. You walked away on Kellan's arm, and I watched you go."

My chest tightened. I remembered that dance. A stranger who'd asked politely, who'd moved with surprising grace for someone his size, who'd made me laugh once when he'd commented dryly on the pack politics playing out across the ballroom. I hadn't known he was Lycan royalty. I hadn't known anything except that Kellan was waiting for me at the edge of the floor and I needed to get back before he got impatient.

"You didn't say anything," I said. My voice came out harder than I meant it to.

"You were bonded," Maverick said simply. "What was I supposed to say?"

I forced my hand away from my neck. My fingers were shaking. I folded my arms across my chest to hide it.

"I came here for an alliance," I said. "Not a confession."

He nodded slowly. "We can do both."

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document. He held it out, not stepping closer, letting me decide whether to take it.

I crossed the space between us and took the paper from his hand. Our fingers didn't touch, but the cedar-and-storm scent intensified so sharply that I had to hold my breath.

I unfolded the document.

It was a formal Lycan betrothal accord. My eyes scanned the terms — co-sovereignty of the Silvercrest Dominion, equal territorial authority, shared governance, legal standing equivalent to his in every Council proceeding. Not a Luna position. Not a consort title. Full partnership.

There was one condition, written in clear, unambiguous language at the bottom.

*The accord becomes binding upon mutual acceptance of the mate bond.*

I looked up. Maverick was watching me with an intensity that made my skin prickle.

"I'm not offering you rescue," he said. "I'm offering you a partnership. But I won't pretend the scent between us isn't what it is."

My wolf was howling now. Not in pain. In recognition. In need. The pull toward him was so strong that I could feel my body leaning forward before I caught myself and straightened.

The dead mark on my neck was still ice-cold.

I looked down at the accord. My fingers brushed the edge of the paper. I could feel the weight of the decision pressing against my ribs, and I hated that my body was responding to him when my mind was still trying to process the fact that three days ago I'd had a different mate and a different bond and a life I'd built with my own hands.

"I'll give you an answer when the war is won," I said.

I folded the accord carefully and placed it inside my evidence file. Then I pulled out the dossier on Margo — every transaction I'd traced, every forged document, every piece of intelligence I'd gathered in the seventy-two hours since Kellan had destroyed everything.

I held it out.

"Start reading," I said.
