Chapter 2

I stood before the full assembly of the Silver Ridge Pack, my heart thundering in my chest but my resolve unshakable. The celebratory atmosphere that had filled our great hall since Robert's awakening now hung suspended, like the moment before lightning strikes. Everyone had gathered to officially welcome their Alpha back—wolves who had barely acknowledged my existence for years now stood at attention, their eyes fixed on the man they considered their savior returned.

Robert sat on his throne-like chair at the center of the raised platform, Amber hovering just behind his right shoulder. My son Michael and his chosen mate Jessica flanked his left side, a united front against the woman who had kept this pack functioning for a decade of darkness.

'We gather to celebrate the return of our Alpha,' David Chen, Robert's Beta, announced to the crowd. His voice carried the appropriate reverence, though I caught the flicker of uncertainty in his eyes as they briefly met mine.

I felt something stirring within me—not the familiar ache of betrayal that had become my constant companion since overhearing Robert's true thoughts, but something older and more powerful. My Luna wolf, so long suppressed beneath the weight of caregiving duties and sacrifice, was awakening with a vengeance.

I moved forward, my steps deliberate. The crowd parted instinctively, creating a path to the platform. I could feel the weight of every gaze as I approached—some curious, some dismissive, some wary. For the first time in years, I stood tall, allowing my spine to straighten to its full height.

'Luna Margaret,' Robert acknowledged with cold formality, his voice carrying that artificial warmth he'd perfected for public appearances. 'You honor us with your presence.'

The mockery in his tone was subtle enough that only those who knew him well would catch it. I saw Michael's lips twitch with barely suppressed amusement.

But something was happening to me. With each step I took toward the platform, I felt power flooding back into my limbs—not the borrowed authority of a Luna who derives her strength from her Alpha, but something primal and entirely my own. My silver wolf surged forward in my consciousness, her presence so strong I could almost feel her fur brushing against my skin from within.

The crowd fell silent as I ascended the three steps to stand before Robert. I was close enough to smell the artificial sweetness of Amber's perfume mingling with his scent. Close enough to see the momentary flash of unease in his eyes as something in my demeanor registered as unfamiliar.

'I have something to say,' I announced, my voice carrying effortlessly across the hall without shouting. The acoustics seemed to amplify my words, though I spoke barely above a whisper.

A silver aura began to emanate from my skin—the Luna power I had suppressed for so long now radiating outward in waves that rippled through the assembly. Several wolves in the front rows instinctively lowered their heads in submission, confused by their own bodies' reactions.

Robert's eyes widened. This was not the worn-out she-wolf he had dismissed.

'I, Margaret Williams,' I began, each word crystal clear and weighted with power, 'Luna of the Silver Ridge Pack, reject you, Robert Williams, as my mate and Alpha.'

The formal words of rejection fell into absolute silence. Then came the gasps, the murmurs, the shocked exclamations rippling through the crowd like wildfire. In thirty years, no one had ever heard a Luna reject her Alpha—especially not publicly, not with such calm authority.

Robert's face contorted with rage and disbelief. He half-rose from his seat, mouth opening to override me with his Alpha command, but the rejection had already taken hold. I felt the mate bond between us snap—not with the agony I had feared, but with a sensation like shackles falling away.

I turned and walked from the platform, head high, as chaos erupted behind me.

---

'She can't do this!' Jessica's voice echoed off the stone walls of the council chamber. 'It's unprecedented!'

I stood outside the heavy oak door, my enhanced hearing easily picking up their conversation. They hadn't even bothered to check if I was nearby—so accustomed were they to my meek presence, my willingness to fade into the background.

'She absolutely can,' Michael countered, his tone calculating rather than defensive. 'And it works in our favor. Father's rejection gives us the perfect opportunity to accelerate our timeline.'

Papers rustled. I imagined them hunched over the ancient pack ledgers, plotting.

'We'll need to draft formal documents stripping her of the Luna title immediately,' Jessica continued. 'We should have her quarters cleared by tomorrow. I've already selected new furnishings.'

'And reassign all her duties,' Michael added. 'Though she hardly performed any real Luna work these past years anyway.'

I pressed my palm against the cool stone wall, steadying myself. The casual cruelty in my son's voice should have wounded me, but instead, it hardened my resolve like steel in fire.

'What about her rights under pack law?' David Chen's voice surprised me. I hadn't realized he was part of this meeting.

'What rights?' Jessica scoffed. 'She rejected the Alpha. She has nothing.'

'Ancient werewolf law actually provides significant protections for—' David began.

'Enough!' Michael snapped. 'My father is the law in this pack. And soon, I will be.'

I stepped away from the door, a cold smile forming on my lips. They thought they knew everything about power. They were about to learn how wrong they were.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Patricia Chen's name flashed on the screen—my old friend, Luna of the neighboring Moonstone Pack, and the most formidable advocate for she-wolf rights in three territories.

It was time to show them what a true Luna could do.
