Chapter 3

Caelan ripped the back wall from the burning cabin and pushed me into the snow. We ran beneath a storm of sparks, shifting only after the trees hid us from the riders. My injured shoulder screamed with every stride.

His black wolf stayed behind mine, taking the exposed position.

We reached an abandoned watchtower near dawn. Caelan collapsed the moment he shifted back. The silver poison in his wound had spread in dark lines across his abdomen.

"You need a healer," I said.

"Frostveil border is half a day away."

"You won't make half a day."

I heated snow in a rusted kettle and used the last of my starleaf. When I cut away his bandage, I found a crescent-shaped scar over his heart—the mark of an Alpha sworn directly to the Moon Council. Only rulers of the seven high packs bore it.

"Who are you?"

His eyes opened. Before he could explain, moonlight poured through the broken roof.

Caelan arched with a strangled roar.

His wolf surged beneath his skin. Bones shifted, then snapped back. The poison trapped him between forms. His scent changed, filling the tower with cedar, smoke, and the dark pull that had haunted me since the lodge.

He crawled away from me.

"Chain," he gasped.

An old iron restraint hung from the wall. He locked one cuff around his wrist and shoved the key across the floor.

"Leave. Barricade the door. Do not come back until sunrise."

His command was broken by pain. My wolf pressed toward him, answering his distress with an ache so deep it stole my breath.

I approached one step.

He slammed himself against the wall to increase the distance. "No. I won't touch you while either of us is confused."

That should have comforted me. Instead, tears burned my eyes.

"I am tired of having every choice taken from me," I said. "My husband chose my best friend. Even my own memory was stolen."

Caelan's claws cut into his palm. "Then choose to walk away. I will protect that choice."

I stood close enough to feel his heat. "If I tell you to stop, will you?"

"Even if it kills me."

I touched his face. His eyes shut, and the fierce Alpha trembled beneath my hand.

"Kiss me," I said.

He did not move. "Say it again when you're certain."

I took the key, released the cuff, and placed it in his palm. "Kiss me, Caelan. Slowly."

His mouth met mine with unbearable care.

The first kiss was not like the bruises I could not remember. It belonged to me because I was awake for it. I felt the roughness of his breath, the restraint in his hands, the instant he stopped when fear tightened my body.

"Do you want me to move?" he asked.

I listened to myself instead of the bond. Beneath fear was desire, but there was also trust built from a hundred small choices: his coat left within reach, his body between me and arrows, his hands withdrawing every time I stiffened.

"No," I whispered. "I want you closer."

His broad hands slid down to my waist and lifted me onto the edge of the stone cot, stepping between my thighs with a low, ragged intake of air.

"Look at me," he commanded softly, his voice thick with unspent heat.

I tilted my head back, meeting his molten slate eyes. The scent of pine and crushed frost filled my lungs, erasing the phantom reek of the past. When his fingers grazed the bare skin of my thigh, parting me deliberately, my breath hitched—not in terror, but in a sudden, aching swell of want.

"Caelan..."

"Tell me," he rasped. His fangs grazed the curve of my jaw, aching to mark me, yet held in check by pure will. "Am I too much?"

"You're not enough," I gasped, burying my hands into his thick hair and pulling him down.

He slid into me with a shuddering groan that vibrated against my ribs. Every agonizing inch of him claimed me with an unbearable reverence. My nails dug into the scarred muscle of his back, anchoring him as his thrusts deepened.

"Mine," he growled against my lips, his control splintering into rough, desperate gasps. "Only because you chose it."

"Yours," I choked out, surrendering completely to the fierce, healing storm he drove into my core.

The tower shook with the storm. His name broke from my lips. The full moon pulled our wolves close enough that I felt his heartbeat as if it were inside my own chest.

Afterward, he wrapped me in his coat and held me.

"I am sorry," he said.

I lifted my head. "For stopping every time I asked?"

"For wanting you when your life is already chaos. For not remembering enough to give you answers."

"I chose tonight. Don't turn it into another thing done to me."

His arms tightened carefully. "Then I will treasure it."

At sunrise, Frostveil scouts surrounded the tower.

Their leader, an elderly woman with white braids and twin knives, stared at my face. Her hard expression shattered.

"Little snowbird," she breathed.

I remembered her. Nessa, my grandmother's guard.

We crossed the border beneath white banners. Frostveil Keep rose from the mountains like a fortress carved from ice. Hundreds gathered in the courtyard, but I saw only the silver-haired woman running down the steps.

Grandmother Helena caught me against her chest.

She smelled of pine soap and the lavender sweets she had hidden in my childhood pockets. I held on as years of loneliness broke open.

"We wrote," she said through tears. "Every month. Your father returned our ravens with their wings broken."

Grandfather Orson came more slowly, leaning on a black cane. He embraced me, then looked at Caelan. Recognition sharpened his face.

"Alpha Caelan Thorne."

The courtyard went silent.

I turned. "Alpha?"

Caelan bowed his head. "Of Nightfang."

The strongest pack on the continent. The pack that controlled the eastern mountains, the iron roads, and nearly half the Moon Council.

I stepped away. "You lied."

"I withheld my title because assassins were hunting me and because I wanted you to decide without power standing behind my name. But yes. I should have told you sooner."

Grandmother touched my cheek. "There are worse truths waiting. Come inside."

In her private chamber, she opened a locked chest. Inside lay my mother's letters, healer reports, and a small glass vial stained purple.

"Your mother did not die from grief or fever," Grandmother said. "She was poisoned over six months."

The room tilted.

She showed me letters in my mother's hand. My mother had discovered that my father and his female beta, Mara Crowe, had been lovers since before my birth. A hedge witch had masked their scents and muted my mother's mate bond so she could not sense the betrayal. When the spell weakened, my mother confronted them.

Three weeks later, she became ill.

"Mara administered the poison," Grandfather said. "Garrick stopped our healer from reaching her."

I looked at the final letter. One line had been underlined in ink blurred by tears.

Mara says Selena deserves everything Elara has, because Garrick is father to them both.

My best friend was my half sister.

My father had placed her beside me from childhood. She had learned my habits, my secrets, my fears. She had poured my tea, taken my groom, and cried while I was rejected.

"The same purple residue was found in your wedding cup," Grandmother said. "Nessa stole it before Ashborne servants destroyed the evidence."

Caelan's power stirred behind me, cold and lethal.

I did not cry.

I folded my mother's letter and held it over my heart.

"I want proof no council can bury," I said. "Then I want everything they stole."

Grandfather's eyes gleamed like old ice. "That sounds like my granddaughter."

I looked at Caelan. I still hated the secrets around him. I still feared the night neither of us remembered. But when I asked, "Will Nightfang help me?" he went to one knee before me.

"My strength, my name, and every wolf under my command," he said. "If you choose them."

For the first time since waking in that bed, the future did not look like an empty road.

It looked like war.
