Chapter 3

I sat staring at the message on my terminal, reading it over and over until the words blurred before my eyes.

*I've been waiting thirteen years for this message. May I call on you tonight?*

Alexander Sterling. Alpha of the Nightfall Pack. One of the most powerful werewolves in the region. My heart pounded against my ribs as Seraphina stirred restlessly within me.

*Answer him,* she urged, her voice stronger than it had been in years.

"Why would an Alpha want me?" I whispered, my fingers hovering uncertainly over the keyboard. "This has to be some kind of joke."

*It's not a joke,* Seraphina insisted. *He sees our worth.*

With trembling hands, I typed a simple reply: *Yes. The neutral hilltop at twilight?*

His response came almost instantly: *I'll be there.*

The rest of the day passed in a blur. I moved through my healing duties mechanically, my mind racing with questions. Why would Alexander Sterling, of all wolves, respond to my impulsive announcement? We'd barely exchanged more than formal greetings at inter-pack gatherings over the years.

"You're really going through with this?" Chloe asked when she found me preparing to leave the pack house that evening. Her eyes were wide with concern.

"I have to," I said, surprised by the determination in my voice. "Thirteen years, Chloe. I gave Marcus thirteen years, and he threw it away in a heartbeat."

She squeezed my hand. "Be careful. Sterling has a reputation."

"For what?"

"Being intense. Fiercely protective of what's his." She paused. "But he's never taken a mate. Not in all these years as Alpha."

I nodded, tucking that curious fact away as I headed toward the pack boundaries. The path to the neutral hilltop was bathed in the fading glow of sunset, the grass silvered with evening dew. Each step I took felt momentous, as if I were walking away from my old life and toward something unknown but inevitable.

Seraphina's presence was a warm, steady pulse beneath my skin. *This is right,* she kept whispering. *This is our path.*

The hilltop was empty when I arrived, the last rays of sunlight giving way to the silvery glow of the rising moon. I stood alone, my arms wrapped around myself, suddenly questioning my sanity. What was I doing here? Meeting a strange Alpha based on a cryptic message?

A rustle in the tall grass made me turn. My breath caught in my throat as an enormous silver wolf emerged from the shadows. He was magnificent—easily twice the size of Marcus's wolf form, with a thick silver coat that gleamed in the moonlight. His eyes, a piercing blue even in wolf form, locked onto mine with an intensity that made my knees weak.

Seraphina surged forward, nearly overwhelming me with her sudden joy. *Him,* she cried within me. *It's him.*

The silver wolf approached slowly, his movements deliberate and graceful despite his massive size. When he was just a few feet away, the air around him shimmered, and I watched in awe as he shifted seamlessly back to human form.

Alexander Sterling stood before me, tall and imposing in the moonlight. His dark hair was swept back from a face that could have been carved from marble—all sharp angles and perfect symmetry. But it was his eyes that held me captive—the same piercing blue they'd been in wolf form, filled with an emotion I couldn't name.

"Rachel," he said, my name sounding like a prayer on his lips. His voice was deep, resonant—the voice of an Alpha, but gentled for me.

"Alpha Sterling," I managed, suddenly acutely aware of the absurdity of our meeting. "I... thank you for coming."

"Alexander," he corrected softly. "Please."

He extended his hand to me, palm up—an invitation, not a demand. When I hesitantly placed my fingers in his, a jolt of electricity shot up my arm. His hand was warm, calloused from years of leading his pack, and it enveloped mine completely.

"I need to show you something," he said, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. He turned his hand, revealing the inside of his ring finger.

There, inked permanently into his skin, were my initials—R.T.—surrounded by a delicate pattern of moonflowers.

"Seven years," he said quietly, his eyes never leaving mine. "I've carried your mark for seven years, Rachel. Since the moment my wolf recognized you as our mate."

I stared at the tattoo, unable to comprehend what I was seeing. "But... we barely know each other. And I was with Marcus..."

"I know." A shadow crossed his face. "I respected your choice. Your commitment. Even when it tore me apart to see you with him." His fingers tightened slightly around mine. "But I've always been waiting. Hoping that someday, you might see me."

The moonlight caught the silver in his hair, the earnest devotion in his eyes, and something inside me shifted—a recognition so profound that it left me breathless.
