Chapter 1

Dawn light filtered through the small window of the Silvermoon Pack's healing den as I methodically arranged my herbs and salves. The familiar scent of willow bark and moonflower filled the air, calming my inner wolf, Seraphina, who purred contentedly within me.

"Just one more month," I whispered, my fingers tracing the empty spot on my neck where Marcus's mark would soon rest. Thirteen years of waiting, of loving, of supporting him through every struggle—it was finally coming to fruition.

I hummed an ancient healing chant as I worked, carefully measuring dried moonflower petals into a mortar. The tincture I was preparing would help old Beta Michaels with his joint pain. My hands moved with practiced efficiency, though I deliberately kept my movements slower than I was capable of. Years of habit—never showing the full extent of my healing abilities to avoid overshadowing Marcus's fragile Delta ego.

"He'll be so proud when we're finally mated," I murmured to Seraphina, who remained uncharacteristically quiet at the mention of Marcus. She'd been that way for years now, a silent presence rather than the vibrant spirit she'd been when I was younger.

I finished preparing the last of my healing trays, arranging the jars of willow-bark salve in neat rows. The den was spotless, every herb in its place, every remedy labeled and organized. Just like my life—carefully structured around Marcus and his needs.

As the day waned, I returned to our shared chambers, eager to tell Marcus about the special blend I'd created for our pack's pregnant females. He'd been distant lately, but I chalked it up to pre-ceremony nerves. Thirteen years was a long time to wait for a marking, but I'd never complained. Good things came to those who were patient, and I'd been nothing if not patient.

When Marcus finally entered our chambers that evening, the tension in his shoulders immediately set me on edge. His scent was different—anxious, with traces of something else I couldn't quite identify.

"Rachel, we need to talk," he said, his voice strained as he paced the room, avoiding my eyes.

I set down the book I'd been reading, my heart suddenly racing. "What is it?"

He stopped pacing and finally looked at me, his expression hardened with resolve. "I need to ask something of you. Something important."

"Anything," I said automatically, the response of thirteen years of putting his needs first.

"Victoria Hayes needs help," he began, referring to his deceased best friend's widow. "She wants a child to continue Jake's bloodline. It was his dying wish."

I nodded slowly, confused about what this had to do with us. "I can prepare fertility herbs for her when she finds a new mate—"

"No," Marcus interrupted, his voice firmer now. "She wants me to father the child."

The room seemed to tilt beneath me. "What?"

"It's for Jake," he said, as if that explained everything. "His bloodline shouldn't end because he died protecting the pack."

"You want to have a child with another she-wolf? One month before our mate ceremony?" My voice was barely a whisper as Seraphina suddenly roared to life within me, her anger scorching through my veins.

"It's not like that," Marcus insisted, though he couldn't meet my eyes. "It's just to honor Jake. You and I will still have our ceremony."

"No." The word escaped me before I could think, surprising both of us. In thirteen years, I'd never directly refused him anything.

Marcus's expression darkened. "Rachel, be reasonable. This isn't about us. It's about duty to a fallen packmate."

"And what about your duty to me?" I demanded, my voice growing stronger as Seraphina pushed me to stand my ground. "To the she-wolf who's stood by you for thirteen years?"

"If you can't understand this, then maybe we need some time apart," Marcus said coldly. "Victoria needs someone to care for her right now. She's fragile after losing Jake."

I watched in stunned silence as he moved to our closet and began pulling out clothes, stuffing them haphazardly into a bag.

"What are you doing?" I asked, though I already knew the answer.

"I'm going to stay with Victoria for a while," he said without looking at me. "Until you come to your senses about this."

The finality in his voice shattered something inside me. Thirteen years of devotion, and he was walking out over another she-wolf?

"If you leave now," I said, my voice trembling with emotion I'd never allowed myself to show, "don't expect me to be waiting when you return."

Marcus paused only briefly, then continued packing. "You'll understand eventually. This is bigger than just us."

Without another word, he shouldered his bag and walked out the door, leaving me alone in the chambers we'd shared for over a decade. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of my world crumbling around me.

Seraphina howled within me, not in grief but in rage—and something else that felt strangely like relief.
