Chapter 6

Aurelia's POV

The moment Lucien decided, the world moved around him.

He didn't ask again. Didn't explain further. One second, I was standing on the street with my heart in my throat and fear crawling up my spine-and the next, his arm was firmly around my waist, guiding me forward as if my fate had already been sealed.

People parted instinctively as we moved.

Not because they knew what he was.

But because some ancient instinct told them not to stand in the way of a predator.

The city blurred past me as Lucien led me toward a sleek black SUV parked at the curb. Rowan followed several steps behind, his jaw tight, his gaze constantly scanning our surroundings.

"How many of them are watching?" I murmured under my breath.

Lucien didn't look at me. "Too many."

That sent a shiver through me.

He opened the passenger door and ushered me inside with a hand firm at my lower back. The contact sent a jolt through me-sharp, electric, unsettling. I hated how my body reacted to him, how easily it responded despite everything he'd done.

Lucien closed the door and rounded the car in seconds. The engine roared to life the moment he slid into the driver's seat.

Rowan hesitated.

Lucien's window rolled down.

"Go," Lucien ordered. "Tell the elders I'm handling it."

Rowan frowned. "They won't like that."

Lucien's eyes flashed. "I didn't ask them to."

Rowan exhaled sharply, then nodded once. "You're making enemies tonight."

Lucien smirked coldly. "I already have."

Rowan stepped back as Lucien pulled away from the curb, the city lights streaking past us as the car accelerated.

Silence stretched between us, thick and heavy.

I stared straight ahead, my fingers clenched tightly in my lap.

"Are you going to tell me where we're going?" I asked eventually.

"My estate," Lucien replied.

My heart skipped. "Your... home?"

"Yes."

"That doesn't make me feel better," I muttered.

"It should," he said. "It's the safest place in Nightfall territory."

"And what exactly is Nightfall territory?" I asked.

Lucien glanced at me briefly. "Mine."

The way he said it-simple, absolute-made my stomach twist.

We left the city behind faster than I expected. Skyscrapers gave way to highways, then to winding roads flanked by towering trees. Darkness closed in around us, thick and alive, the forest pressing close as if it were watching us pass.

The bond stirred again, reacting to the land itself.

"This place feels... different," I said softly.

Lucien nodded. "It recognizes you."

That made my skin prickle. "That's not comforting."

"It will be," he said. "Once you understand it."

The car finally slowed, pulling up to wrought iron gates that rose out of the darkness like something out of a nightmare. Symbols were etched into the metal-ancient, unfamiliar, yet somehow they felt... familiar.

The gates opened on their own.

I swallowed hard.

Lucien drove through, the path curving up toward a massive structure looming ahead. The estate emerged from the shadows gradually, stone and glass fused together in a way that felt both ancient and modern.

It was beautiful.

And intimidating as hell.

"This is where you live?" I asked.

"Yes."

I stared at the mansion in disbelief. "You live like a king."

Lucien's mouth tightened. "I rule like one."

The car came to a stop near the entrance. The moment Lucien stepped out, I felt it again-that invisible pressure, that awareness of being watched.

The front doors opened before we reached them.

Men and women stood inside the entrance hall, all of them still, all of them watching.

Wolves.

Every single one of them.

Their eyes followed me as Lucien guided me inside, whispers rippling through the space like a living thing.

"That's her."

"The rejected one."

"She triggered the bond."

"Is she human?"

Lucien growled softly.

The sound cut through the murmurs instantly.

"Enough," he commanded.

Silence fell.

He turned to me, his voice lower now. "Stay close."

"I don't think I have a choice," I murmured.

A woman stepped forward from the group. She was tall, elegant, her silver hair pulled back tightly. Her gaze was sharp, calculating.

"Alpha," she said. "You should not have brought her here."

Lucien didn't slow. "You don't get to decide that, Selene."

Selene's eyes flicked to me. "She's unstable."

"I'm standing right here," I snapped.

Her gaze sharpened. "Then you should listen carefully. Your presence endangers this pack."

Lucien stopped abruptly.

The temperature in the room dropped.

"You forget yourself," he said coldly.

Selene stiffened but held her ground. "The elders-"

"Will speak to me," Lucien interrupted. "Not to her."

His hand settled on my back again, possessive and protective all at once.

The bond flared.

I gasped softly, my knees threatening to buckle as something surged through me-heat, pressure, instinct.

Lucien noticed instantly.

"What is it?" he asked sharply.

"I-I don't know," I whispered. "Everything feels... louder."

Selene's eyes widened slightly. "She's already reacting to the territory."

Lucien cursed under his breath.

"She needs rest," he said. "And privacy."

Selene hesitated. "Lucien-"

"That wasn't a request."

Lucien led me away from the gathering, up a grand staircase and down a long corridor until we reached a massive door at the far end.

"My rooms," he said.

I froze. "Your rooms?"

"Yes."

"That's not appropriate," I blurted out.

Lucien's gaze softened just slightly. "You'll be safer here than anywhere else."

He opened the door and guided me inside.

The room was vast, dark wood and stone softened by warm lighting. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the forest, moonlight spilling in like silver fire.

"This is where I sleep," Lucien said quietly.

My heart raced. "And where do I sleep?"

"Here," he replied simply.

I stared at him. "You rejected me, remember?"

His jaw tightened. "I remember."

"Then why bring me here?" I demanded.

Lucien stepped closer, stopping just short of touching me.

"Because rejecting you didn't break the bond," he said. "And pretending it doesn't exist is no longer an option."

The honesty in his voice made my chest ache.

"I don't trust you," I whispered.

"You shouldn't," he agreed. "But you can trust this territory. And you can trust that no one will touch you without my permission."

That didn't calm me as much as it should have.

"What happens now?" I asked.

Lucien exhaled slowly. "Now, the elders will test you."

My blood ran cold. "Test me how?"

Before he could answer, a sharp pain ripped through my lower abdomen.

I cried out, doubling over.

Lucien caught me instantly, his arms steady and strong.

"Aurelia," he said urgently. "Talk to me."

"I-I don't know," I gasped. "Something's wrong."

The pain intensified, heat flooding through me as something deep inside me shifted violently.

Lucien's eyes widened with recognition-and fear.

"This isn't just the bond," he murmured. "This is-"

A knock thundered against the door.

"Alpha!" Selene's voice called sharply. "The elders are here."

Lucien looked down at me, his expression grim.

"They felt it," he said. "Whatever just awakened inside you... they felt it."

The pain surged again.

And suddenly, I knew.

I wasn't just bonded to Lucien Blackthorne.

I was carrying something that could change everything.
