Chapter 1

I was the unshifted fiancée of the Alpha, working eighteen-hour days to design his kingdom while waiting for my wolf to finally wake up.

He told me we couldn't be intimate until I shifted, claiming it was to "conserve my energy."

I believed him, right up until I saw the email notification on his open laptop.

It was an invitation to the baptism of his two-year-old son. The mother was Hayden, the "fragile" Omega he claimed was just like a sister to him.

He wasn't waiting for me to shift. He was waiting for me to finish his fortifications so he could replace me.

When I tried to freeze the construction funds, he sabotaged my climbing gear, hoping a "tragic accident" would silence me forever.

When I survived, he froze my bank accounts and humiliated me at the pack auction, using the money I had saved to buy a diamond necklace for his mistress.

They thought I was powerless without a wolf. They thought they could broadcast intimate videos of me to shame me into submission.

But they forgot that as the architect, I built the very security systems they felt safe behind.

I walked into the ceremony not as a victim, but with the rival Alpha by my side and a decrypted USB drive in my hand.

"You want to talk about secrets?" I smiled at the terrifying silence of the hall.

"Let's show the pack who the real father of your 'heir' is."

Chapter 1

Elana POV

Blueprints for the new northern fortifications sprawled across the mahogany desk. My fingers traced the white lines, calculating load-bearing walls and silver-laced concrete mixtures.

This was my contribution to the Obsidian Pack. I was their chief architect. I was their future Luna.

But I wasn't a wolf. Not yet.

I paused, my hand hovering over the paper. I was twenty-two years old. Most wolves in our world endured *The Shift* at eighteen. It’s a brutal, bone-breaking reckoning where your human form tears apart to reveal the beast within. It is the mark of adulthood. It is the mark of power.

I had never felt it.

Inside me, there was only a silence where a wolf should be howling.

*“...honestly, does Emilio really intend to make the Unshifted One our Luna?”*

The voice slid into my head, uninvited. It was the *Mind-Link*.

Usually, the link is a chaotic hum of voices, orders, and feelings connecting every member of the pack. As the future Luna, I had access to the general channels, and sometimes, people forgot to shield their thoughts.

*“She’s smart, sure,”* another voice, an Elder named Marcus, replied in the link. *“But a Luna needs to produce strong pups. Can a wolf-less body even carry an Alpha’s heir?”*

I squeezed my eyes shut, pushing the voices out. I built a mental wall, a trick I had learned to survive the constant noise.

They were right to doubt.

I glanced at the framed photo on the corner of the desk. It was me and Emilio, taken three years ago at university. He looked dashing, his jawline sharp, his eyes possessing that intense amber hue of a powerful Alpha bloodline.

I had given up everything for him. I had a full scholarship to the Alpine Pack’s prestigious design academy. It was my dream.

But Emilio had looked at me with those eyes. He had told me I was brilliant. He had told me he needed me to build his legacy.

"You are the only one who understands my vision, Elana," he had said.

He proposed a month after graduation. He told me I was his Luna. But there was a problem.

We weren't *Fated Mates*.

When Fated Mates meet, the Moon Goddess takes over. You smell a scent that drives you mad—like rain on hot asphalt or fresh pine. Your heart races. Your wolf roars *Mine!* A single touch sends electricity through your veins.

I never felt that with Emilio.

"The bond is latent," he had assured me, kissing my forehead. "Because you haven't shifted yet. Once you turn, the bond will snap into place. Until then, we choose each other."

I believed him. I wanted to believe him.

So I worked eighteen-hour days. I designed the pack house. I managed the logistics. I played the perfect partner.

But lately, Emilio was distant.

"I need to conserve my energy for the pack borders," he would say when I asked why he wouldn't sleep in our bed. "We can't risk a pregnancy until you shift. It's dangerous."

It sounded noble. But it felt cold.

A sharp static noise buzzed in my head.

It wasn't the usual *Mind-Link* hum. It was a glitch. Sometimes, when emotions run high, the Alpha's private link can bleed through to those closest to him.

I felt... giddy?

No, I felt excited. But I was sitting alone in a cold office. This wasn't my emotion.

It was his.

Why was Emilio so excited right now? He was supposed to be in a budget meeting.

My gaze drifted to his personal laptop, which sat open on the side table. He rarely left it unlocked.

Curiosity is a dangerous thing. They say it killed the cat, but today, it was going to kill the girl I used to be.

I walked over and tapped the spacebar.

The screen lit up. It was his email inbox.

A new message had just popped up. The subject line made my blood freeze.

Subject: Invitation to the Baptism of Leo Thomas.

My breath hitched. Thomas. That was Emilio's surname.

I clicked it.

A digital invitation filled the screen, decorated with little blue paw prints. In the center was a photo of a toddler. A boy. He had curly hair and bright, amber eyes.

Emilio's eyes.

Underneath the photo, the text read:

Join us in welcoming the wolf of Leo Thomas.

Proud Parents: Alpha Emilio Thomas & Hayden Cleveland.

The world tilted on its axis.

Hayden Cleveland.

I knew her. She was a "fragile" Omega who had joined the pack two years ago. She was always sick, always needing help, always looking at Emilio with wide, teary eyes.

Emilio had told me, "She's like a little sister, Elana. She has no one. We must be kind."

A sister.

I felt a physical blow to my gut, harder than any punch. Nausea rolled over me.

They had a child. A son.

The boy in the photo looked about two years old.

Do the math, Elana.

Two years old. Plus nine months of pregnancy.

Emilio had been sleeping with her almost the entire time we had been engaged.

"I need to conserve energy," he had said.

"We can't risk it," he had said.

Lies. All lies.

He wasn't waiting for me to shift. He was waiting for me to be useful enough to finish his fortifications while he built a family with someone else.

I looked down at my hands. They were shaking uncontrollably.

The *Mind-Link* buzzed again.

*“Did you send the invite to the inner circle?”* It was Emilio’s voice, clear and affectionate.

*“Yes, baby. But what about... her?”* A female voice. Hayden. Her mental voice wasn't weak or fragile. It was smug.

*“Don't worry about Elana,”* Emilio replied. *“She’s buried in blueprints. She won't lift her head until the walls are built. By then, Leo will be shifted and undeniable.”*

My vision went red. Not metaphorically. My vision literally bled red at the edges.

Somewhere deep inside my chest, in that empty space where I thought I had no wolf, something stirred.

It wasn't a howl. It was a snarl.

I looked at the framed photo of us on the desk. The smiling couple. The lie.

I gripped the heavy crystal frame.

"You used me," I whispered. The silence of the room amplified my voice. "You made me build your kingdom while you laughed at me."

I hurled the frame at the wall.

*CRASH.*

The glass exploded. Shards rained down onto the plush carpet. The photo lay twisted and torn among the debris.

One large shard of glass reflected my face. My eyes were wide. My skin was pale. I looked broken.

No.

I looked furious.

"Emilio Thomas," I hissed, the words tasting like bile and ash in my mouth. "You want your walls? I will bring them down on your head."

I wasn't the Luna anymore. I was the architect. And I knew exactly where the structural weaknesses were.
