Chapter 2

I collapsed at the edge of the forest, my lungs burning with each ragged breath. The phone with its damning evidence lay beside me, screen still illuminated with messages that had shattered my world. Nine years of devotion reduced to nothing but a cruel joke. I was nothing to him—just a wolfless omega he could use and discard.

My hands trembled as I reached into my pocket and withdrew the silver-edged dagger I'd carried since the rogue attack years ago. The same attack where I'd nearly died saving Nathan. The irony was unbearable.

"It would be better," I whispered to myself, pressing the cold metal against my wrist. "Better than living through what they planned."

The forest seemed to hold its breath. One quick slice and it would be over. No humiliation. No pack-wide shame. Just... peace.

As I applied pressure, a wave of commanding energy slammed into me like a physical force. My hand froze mid-motion, the dagger hovering above my skin.

"Stop." The voice was deep, steady, and carried an unmistakable Beta aura that made my wolf-less body respond instinctively.

I looked up through tear-blurred vision to see a tall figure emerging from the shadows of Shadowmere territory. Even in my distress, I recognized him—Sebastian Quinn, the Beta whose reputation for honor was known across packs.

"This isn't your territory," I managed, my voice breaking. "This isn't your concern."

He moved with startling speed, kneeling beside me and gently but firmly removing the dagger from my grasp. His touch was careful, nothing like the bruising grip I'd grown accustomed to from higher-ranking wolves.

"A life is always my concern," he said quietly, his eyes scanning my face with an intensity that made me look away. "Especially one as valuable as yours."

I laughed bitterly. "Valuable? I'm a wolfless omega who just discovered she was about to be—" My voice broke, unable to form the words.

Something shifted in his expression—a flash of barely contained rage quickly masked by calm resolve. Without warning, he scooped me into his arms. I was too exhausted to protest as he carried me across the territorial boundary and into Shadowmere land.

"You're safe now," he murmured, his steady heartbeat against my ear strangely comforting. "I give you my word."

The Shadowmere Pack House was nothing like Moonridge's ostentatious mansion. It felt... warmer somehow. Sebastian carried me through hallways of polished wood and soft lighting, past curious but respectful pack members who quickly averted their eyes at his subtle head shake.

He brought me to a private chamber on the upper floor, its windows overlooking dense forest rather than pack grounds. A sanctuary.

"This room is yours for as long as you need it," he said, carefully setting me on the edge of the bed. "No one enters without your permission."

He stepped back, maintaining a respectful distance that spoke volumes about his character. With efficient movements, he summoned two attendants—wolfless omegas like me—and instructed them to prepare herbal poultices for the scratches on my arms and face from my frantic run through the forest.

As they worked, Sebastian remained by the door, his powerful presence somehow making me feel protected rather than trapped. When the attendants left, he pulled a chair to a careful distance from the bed.

"Will you tell me what happened?" he asked, his voice gentle but firm.

Something about his steady gaze broke the last of my defenses. The words poured out of me—Nathan's sudden attention, my foolish hope, the discovery of his cruel plans. I showed him the phone, watched his jaw tighten as he scrolled through messages that detailed my intended humiliation.

Through it all, Sebastian listened without interruption, his eyes never leaving mine. I couldn't know that behind that controlled expression, his wolf was whimpering my name, had been for years.

"You'll stay here," he said when I finished, his tone leaving no room for argument. "Rest now. Tomorrow will be soon enough to decide what comes next."

As he left, I curled into myself on the unfamiliar bed, emotionally drained yet somehow feeling the faintest flicker of something I'd thought lost forever—safety.

Dawn arrived with a symphony of notification sounds from the phone I'd stolen. With trembling fingers, I unlocked the screen to find my worst nightmare realized. Intimate photos—some real, some doctored—were trending across pack networks. Nathan had implemented his plan despite my escape.

A commotion outside drew me to the window. A small crowd had gathered below—wolves from both Silverstone and Moonridge. Their faces turned upward, spotting me with predatory grins.

"There she is!" someone shouted. "The wolfless whore who thought she could be Luna!"

"Come down, pretty omega! We've all seen what you're offering now!"

I stumbled back from the window, nausea rising in my throat. This was it—the destruction Nathan had promised. My life as I knew it was over.

The door opened, and Sebastian entered, his face a mask of controlled fury. Without a word, he stationed two Beta guards outside my room, their auras creating an invisible barrier that would warn off all but the most determined intruders.

"No one touches you," he said, his voice low and dangerous. "No one."

As he turned to leave, our eyes met, and something passed between us—a connection I couldn't name but felt down to my bones. In that moment, I realized I'd been running toward the wrong wolf for nine long years.
