Chapter 3

The full moon hung heavy in the night sky, casting silver light across the sprawling Silvermoon territory. I stood at the edge of the clearing, my body still tender from the rogue attack, but my determination stronger than ever. Tonight would be my first pack run since my 'recovery'—and another perfect opportunity to advance my charade.

Adrian stood beside me, his imposing presence drawing curious glances from the gathered pack members. In the week since our alliance had formed, we'd carefully crafted our performance, each interaction designed to fuel the rumors spreading through the pack like wildfire.

"Ready?" Adrian asked, his voice low enough that only I could hear.

I nodded, feeling Lyra stir restlessly within me. "More than ready."

Brandon's voice cut through the murmurs as he addressed the pack, his golden wolf already pushing against his skin. "Tonight we celebrate Natalie's return to us," he announced, his eyes finding mine with calculated concern. "And we welcome Adrian Sterling to our run."

The way he emphasized Adrian's name carried a subtle dismissal that didn't go unnoticed. Several pack members shifted uncomfortably, eyes darting between us.

I let my transformation take over, welcoming the momentary escape from pain as my body shifted. Lyra emerged with a triumphant howl, our brown fur gleaming in the moonlight. Beside me, Adrian's transformation was something to behold—his black wolf massive, nearly twice the size of a normal Alpha's, with those same piercing silver eyes that seemed to glow with ancient power.

*"He's not just any wolf,"* Lyra observed within our shared consciousness. *"There's something more to him."*

I didn't have time to ponder this as Brandon's golden wolf led the pack into the forest. Adrian moved to follow, but I playfully nipped at his flank, darting around him with a freedom I hadn't felt in years. His massive head turned, silver eyes regarding me with surprise before something like amusement flickered in their depths.

I danced around him again, my movements deliberately carefree, aware that many eyes watched us. When his great black wolf finally responded, chasing me through a small clearing, the gasps from the pack members were audible even to my wolf ears.

The game continued until I spotted Brandon's golden form stalking back toward us, his posture rigid with barely contained fury. Without hesitation, I ducked behind Adrian's massive form, pressing against him in a display of trust that sent whispers rippling through the watching pack.

Brandon's wolf snarled, taking a step toward us. Adrian's response was immediate—a low, rumbling growl that seemed to vibrate through the very earth beneath our paws. The sound carried something ancient and powerful that made every wolf, even Brandon, instinctively back away.

The message was clear: I was under Adrian's protection now.

---

Hours later, we sat in the warm glow of Adrian's cabin, the secluded structure nestled deep in the territory's edge. The run had accomplished exactly what I'd hoped—establishing our supposed bond while undermining Brandon's authority.

"You played your part well tonight," Adrian said, handing me a steaming mug of tea before taking a seat across from me. The firelight cast shadows across his sharp features, making him look both dangerous and strangely vulnerable.

"So did you," I replied, studying him. "Though I don't think that growl was entirely an act. You genuinely hate him, don't you?"

Something dark flashed in Adrian's eyes. "I have my reasons."

"I think it's time we shared those reasons," I said quietly. "If we're going to be allies, I need to know what drives you."

The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken truths. Finally, Adrian leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near whisper.

"My father was executed when I was seventeen," he said, each word precise and heavy with controlled rage. "Alpha Walsh—Brandon's father—accused him of betraying pack secrets to rogues. It was a lie. A convenient way to eliminate a threat to his power."

The pieces clicked into place. "You're not just any exiled wolf, are you?"

"No." His silver eyes met mine. "My family line is Lycan. Royal blood. We ruled these territories for generations before the Walshes seized power."

I absorbed this revelation, understanding now why Brandon had chosen Adrian for his scheme—an exiled royal with a vendetta would be easy to manipulate.

"Your turn," Adrian said. "You knew about Brandon and Madison before the attack. How?"

I hesitated, then decided to test a theory that had been forming since our alliance began. "Someone sent me evidence. Photos, messages. Anonymous."

Something flickered across his face—too quick to name, but enough to confirm my suspicion.

"It was you, wasn't it?" I asked softly. "You sent the evidence."

Adrian's gaze remained steady, but the slight tension in his jaw told me everything. A strange warmth spread through my chest—the first genuine feeling I'd experienced since the attack.

"Why would you do that for a stranger?" I pressed.

"Perhaps I simply enjoy watching the Walshes' plans unravel," he replied, but there was something more in his voice—something he wasn't ready to share.

A tenuous trust formed between us in that moment, built on shared pain and common enemies. For the first time since overhearing Brandon's betrayal, I felt something beyond rage and revenge—a dangerous flicker of hope.

---

Three nights later, the pack house dining hall glowed with candlelight for the formal dinner welcoming Adrian to the territory. I wore a simple blue dress that highlighted the fading bruises on my arms—a deliberate choice to remind everyone of what I'd survived.

Brandon had seated us directly across from him and Madison, a power play designed to watch us closely. Throughout the meal, he peppered me with questions about pack events from the past year—testing my supposed memory loss.

"Don't you remember the Winter Solstice celebration, Natalie?" he asked, his voice carrying just enough concern to seem genuine to those who didn't know better. "You wore that red dress I gave you."

I felt Adrian tense beside me, recognizing the trap. If I answered correctly, Brandon would claim my memory was returning and push to reclaim me. If I feigned complete ignorance, it would seem suspicious.

Instead, I leaned toward Adrian, my lips close to his ear but my voice just loud enough for Brandon to hear. "My wolf only remembers him," I whispered, letting my hand rest on Adrian's arm. "Everything else feels like someone else's life."

The electric contact between us wasn't entirely feigned. Something about Adrian's proximity sent warmth cascading through me, a reaction I hadn't anticipated.

Across the table, Brandon's knuckles whitened around his fork, his mask of concern slipping to reveal the fury beneath. Madison placed a soothing hand on his arm, but her eyes burned with jealousy as they fixed on me.

I met her gaze steadily, the perfect picture of innocent confusion, while inside, Lyra purred with satisfaction.

The game was escalating, and for the first time, I was the one making the rules.
