Chapter 2

I fled from the Moonrise Pack gathering, my vision blurred with tears as I ran through the night. Ryan's betrayal echoed in my mind with each pounding footstep. The sacred marking ritual—performed with Isabella while his Beta friends laughed at my expense. Years of devotion reduced to a cruel joke.

Selene howled within me, her anguish matching my own. *He was never truly ours,* she whimpered. *We've been blind.*

The small cottage Ryan had 'generously' provided came into view—a place I'd once thought of as our first home together. Now it felt like another manipulation, a convenient place to keep me until I was no longer useful.

I burst through the door, slamming it behind me. My chest heaved as I leaned against it, sliding down until I hit the floor. The tears wouldn't stop coming.

"How could he?" I whispered into the empty room. "After everything..."

*The letter,* Selene suddenly urged. *Remember the letter.*

My mother's letter. The one she'd left for me before she died—the one I was supposed to open on my twenty-fifth birthday, still three months away. Something in Selene's tone made me rise to my feet despite my shattered heart.

I moved to the bedroom, kneeling beside the loose floorboard where I'd hidden it years ago. My fingers trembled as I pried up the wood, revealing the sealed envelope beneath. The wax seal bore an unfamiliar crest—a wolf with a crown.

"Now?" I asked Selene, uncertain.

*Now,* she confirmed. *We need to know who we really are.*

I broke the seal, unfolding the parchment with shaking hands. The elegant script swam before my tear-filled eyes:

*My dearest daughter,

If you are reading this, then I am gone, and you have lived your life hidden from those who would harm you. The time has come for you to know the truth: You are not merely Sophia Sterling. You are the daughter of King Alaric and Queen Eliana of the Silvermoon Territory—the last surviving heir to the most powerful Lycan bloodline.

Your father and I sent you away to protect you from those who assassinated us for our throne. The emerald in your eyes is the mark of our lineage, as is the silver of your wolf. You are the Lycan Princess, and Silvermoon awaits its rightful ruler.

Return to your people, my daughter. Reclaim your birthright.

With eternal love,

Your mother*

The letter slipped from my fingers as the room spun around me. A Lycan Princess? Me?

*I knew it,* Selene's voice rang with certainty. *I've always known we were more.*

"Why didn't you tell me?" I whispered, stunned.

*You weren't ready. But now...*

Now Ryan had betrayed me. Now I had nothing left to lose.

I spent the night gathering the few possessions that truly mattered—my mother's locket, a small savings I'd hidden away, and clothes that would sustain me on a journey. As dawn broke, I stood at the cottage door one last time.

"Goodbye," I whispered, not to the cottage, but to the life I'd lived in Ryan's shadow.

*Silvermoon,* Selene urged. *Home.*

I nodded, feeling a strange new confidence straighten my spine. With each step away from the territory that had never truly been mine, something shifted within me. My wolf grew stronger, more present.

*Follow the eastern star,* she guided. *Trust me.*

The journey took hours, my feet carrying me through forests and across streams. With each mile, a strange warmth built within my chest, spreading through my limbs. By midday, I felt it—a shimmer around me that I'd never noticed before.

"What's happening?" I asked Selene as I paused at the edge of an ancient forest.

*Our aura,* she replied with pride. *Our birthright awakening.*

I looked down at my hands, seeing for the first time the subtle green and silver light that emanated from my skin—invisible to human eyes but unmistakable to any wolf who might be watching.

As I crossed what I somehow knew was the border to Silvermoon Territory, a figure emerged from the trees ahead—an elderly woman with knowing eyes and a regal bearing despite her years.

She immediately dropped to one knee, head bowed.

"My Princess," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "I am Elder Elara. We have awaited your return."

Behind her, other wolves emerged from the forest, each kneeling in turn. Elara approached, reaching into a velvet pouch at her waist. She withdrew a silver ring bearing the same crest as my mother's letter—the crowned wolf.

"Your royal signet, Your Highness," she whispered, offering it with trembling hands. "The mark of the Silvermoon Alpha."

As I slipped the ring onto my finger, a surge of power rushed through me. My eyes flashed—I could feel them change, the emerald green intensifying until the elders gasped in unison.

"The Lycan fire," one murmured in awe.

I stood before them, no longer the naive she-wolf who had devoted herself to a man who saw her as nothing. For the first time in my life, I felt Selene and I truly united, our power no longer dormant.

"Rise," I commanded, surprised by the authority in my own voice. "Take me home."

As the elders led me deeper into Silvermoon Territory, I wondered if Ryan had discovered my absence yet—and what he would do when he learned exactly who he had betrayed.
