Chapter 2

The weeks following our anniversary passed in a haze of mounting dread and desperate hope. Each morning I woke to find Leo's side of the bed cold, each evening he returned with excuses that grew thinner than morning mist.

"Territory patrol ran long," he'd say, avoiding my eyes as he headed straight for the shower. "Rogue activity near the eastern border."

But it was the scent that haunted me—that same floral fragrance of jasmine and vanilla that now seemed to permeate every corner of our home. It clung to his clothes, his hair, even his skin despite his increasingly frequent showers. My wolf paced restlessly within me, her hackles raised in constant agitation.

*She's everywhere,* my wolf whimpered during one of our evening runs. *Her scent marks our territory like she owns it.*

I'd tried to dismiss it as paranoia, but Crystal's worried glances during pack meetings told me I wasn't imagining things. It was during one of our morning walks that she finally voiced what we both knew.

"Lily," she said carefully, her voice barely above a whisper as we passed near Crystal Lake—the territory I'd always dreamed of claiming for our future den. "The pack is talking."

My steps faltered. "About what?"

"About Leo's... private runs with that rogue she-wolf." Crystal's jaw tightened. "Amora Martinez. She showed up at our borders three weeks ago, and now she's practically living in our territory."

The name hit me like a physical blow. Amora. So the scent had a name, a face to match the destruction it was wreaking on my marriage.

"They say it's for territory security," Crystal continued, her tone suggesting she believed otherwise. "But Lily, the timing..."

I knew the timing. Every absence, every late night, every moment Leo chose to be anywhere but with his mate coincided perfectly with his supposed "security patrols" with this rogue.

That morning, as if summoned by our conversation, nausea hit me like a tidal wave. I barely made it behind a cluster of pine trees before my stomach emptied itself violently. Crystal was beside me instantly, her hand rubbing soothing circles on my back.

"How long?" she asked softly.

I wiped my mouth with shaking hands, the realization hitting me with crystal clarity. "Six weeks, maybe seven."

Her eyes widened. "Lily, you need to see Elena immediately."

The pack healer confirmed what my body had already told me. Pregnant. After years of postponing this dream for Leo's expansion plans, the Moon Goddess had finally blessed us with a pup. I should have been euphoric, but instead, terror clawed at my chest.

When the morning sickness struck again two days later—violent and unrelenting—I reached out through our mate bond, desperate for Leo's presence. The connection felt weak, muffled, but I pushed harder.

*Leo, I need you. Something's wrong.*

Silence.

I tried again, pouring every ounce of my Luna strength into the call. *Please, I need to get to Elena. The baby...*

Nothing but an empty void where my mate's response should have been.

Panic consumed me as another wave of nausea hit. I stumbled toward the phone, dialing Marcus's number with trembling fingers.

"Beta Stone," his voice was crisp, professional.

"Marcus," I gasped between dry heaves, "I need Leo. Where is he?"

A pause. Too long. "Luna, he's... on patrol. Near Crystal Lake. I'll find him immediately."

Crystal Lake. Of course.

Two hours. Two agonizing hours I spent curled on our bathroom floor, my wolf whimpering in distress as my body rebelled against the pregnancy hormones. When Leo finally burst through our front door, his hair was disheveled, his clothes rumpled, and that damned floral scent clung to him like a second skin.

"Lily!" He dropped to his knees beside me, his hands hovering uncertainly. "I'm sorry, I couldn't hear you clearly through the bond. There was an attack—"

"An attack?" I looked up at him through tears of pain and betrayal. Fresh scratches marked his forearms, but they looked... wrong. Too neat. Too shallow.

"Amora was hurt," he said quickly, not meeting my eyes. "Rogues came out of nowhere. I had to make sure she was safe before—"

"Before coming to your pregnant mate who was calling for help through our bond?" The words came out sharper than I intended, my Luna authority bleeding through despite my weakened state.

Leo's face flushed. "It wasn't like that. You don't understand—"

"Then help me understand." I struggled to my feet, one hand pressed against the wall for support. "Help me understand why another she-wolf's safety comes before your mate and unborn pup."

He opened his mouth to respond, but no words came. The silence stretched between us, heavy with unspoken truths and the weight of a bond that felt more fragile than spider silk.

The pack meeting three days later would shatter what remained of my illusions entirely. I sat in my Luna chair beside Leo, trying to project strength despite the lingering nausea that plagued my mornings. The council was discussing border patrols when the chamber doors burst open.

She walked in like she owned the place—young, beautiful, with long dark hair and curves that seemed designed to catch every male eye in the room. But it was her scent that made my wolf snarl with recognition. Jasmine and vanilla, thick and cloying in the suddenly tense air.

Amora Martinez.

She moved with predatory grace, ignoring the shocked murmurs of the pack council as she approached the head table. Her green eyes locked onto mine with calculated malice as she pulled out her phone.

"Luna Lily," she purred, her voice sickeningly sweet. "I think it's time we had a proper introduction."

She held up her phone, swiping through photos with deliberate slowness. Each image was a knife to my heart—Leo and this she-wolf by Crystal Lake, his arm around her waist, her head on his shoulder, their bodies pressed together in intimate embraces that should have been mine.

"Beautiful territory, isn't it?" Amora's smile was razor-sharp. "Leo's been showing me all his favorite spots. He says it's where he plans to build his future."

My Luna aura flickered like a candle in a hurricane. Around us, the pack council sat frozen, witnessing their Luna's public humiliation.

"I'm here to formally challenge you for the Luna position," Amora announced, her voice carrying to every corner of the chamber. "The Moon Goddess has shown me the truth—Leo and I are destined mates. And to prove it..."

She placed one hand on her still-flat stomach, her smile turning triumphant.

"I'm carrying his heir."
