Chapter 1

The morning light filtered through the curtains of our bedroom, casting golden streaks across the empty space beside me. My hand reached out instinctively, searching for the warmth that should have been there, but found only cold sheets that hadn't been disturbed since I'd gone to bed alone.

Four years. Today marked four years since Jason and I had completed our mating ceremony under the full moon, when he'd whispered promises of forever against my neck as his mark settled into my skin. I touched the spot now, feeling the slight raised scar that bound us together, and tried to remember the last time it had brought me anything but pain.

The shower down the hall told me he was already up, probably preparing for another day of avoiding me. I slipped from bed and padded to the kitchen, where I'd spent hours yesterday preparing his favorite breakfast – blueberry pancakes with maple syrup from the trees on our territory's northern border. The batter sat in the refrigerator, untouched, while the coffee maker gurgled to life.

Jason appeared in the doorway as I was plating the pancakes, his dark hair still damp from his shower. He looked every inch the Alpha he was – broad shoulders filling out his fitted shirt, commanding presence that made the air itself seem to bend around him. Once, that presence had made me feel protected. Now it felt like a wall between us.

"You're up early," he said, not meeting my eyes as he reached for his travel mug.

"It's our anniversary." The words hung in the air between us like a challenge.

His hand paused on the coffee pot handle. "Right. Four years."

The casual dismissal in his tone made my wolf whimper inside my chest. "I made breakfast. I thought we could—"

"I can't. I have meetings all day." He poured his coffee with mechanical precision, still not looking at me. "Pack business."

I glanced at his phone on the counter, the screen lighting up with notifications. His calendar was visible, and my heart clenched as I saw the entry for tonight: 'Private meeting - RC.' Raven Clark. On our anniversary.

"Jason." My voice was steadier than I felt. "It's our mating anniversary. Surely the pack can spare you for one evening."

Finally, he looked at me, and the coldness in his green eyes made me step back. "Fate doesn't require celebration, Ivy. The bond exists whether we acknowledge it or not." He grabbed his coffee and headed for the door. "I have more important things to focus on than arbitrary dates."

Arbitrary dates. Four years of marriage reduced to an arbitrary date.

I stood in our kitchen, surrounded by the breakfast I'd made with love, watching my mate walk away from me like I was nothing more than an inconvenience. The pancakes grew cold on the plate as I tried to process the casual cruelty of his words.

My wolf pressed against my consciousness, her pain radiating through every fiber of my being. She didn't understand why our mate rejected us, why the bond that should have brought us together seemed to be tearing us apart instead. I pressed my palm against my chest, trying to ease the ache that had become my constant companion.

The sound of his car starting in the driveway echoed through the empty house. I walked to the window and watched him drive away, probably toward whatever meeting he'd prioritized over our anniversary. The irony wasn't lost on me – on the day that should have celebrated our bond, I'd never felt more alone.

I dumped the breakfast into the trash, each pancake landing with a soft thud that seemed to echo the sound of my heart breaking a little more. Four years ago, Jason would have moved mountains to spend our anniversary with me. Now, he moved mountains to avoid me.

The house felt too quiet, too empty, filled with memories of what we used to be. I climbed the stairs to our bedroom and caught sight of myself in the mirror – Luna Ivy Thompson, mate to Alpha Jason Hoffman, looking every inch the abandoned wife I'd become. My reflection showed a woman who'd learned to smile through pain, to maintain dignity while her world crumbled around her.

But today, on what should have been our day, I couldn't summon even that facade.

I touched my mating mark again, feeling its warmth despite the coldness growing in my chest. The bond that once felt like a blessing now felt like a chain, keeping me tethered to a man who'd already chosen someone else.

Somewhere in the distance, I could hear the pack stirring to life, unaware that their Luna was falling apart in the privacy of her bedroom. Tonight, while they expected their Alpha and Luna to celebrate four years of unity, Jason would be with Raven instead.

The thought settled in my stomach like a stone, heavy and indigestible. Four years, and this was what we'd become.
