Chapter 1

The scent of moonflowers filled our private dining room as I adjusted the last crystal glass on the table. Five years. Five perfect years as Conrad's Luna, and tonight would be our most special anniversary yet.

I smoothed down the silver silk dress he'd gifted me last month, my fingers tracing the delicate embroidery along the neckline. Everything had to be perfect. The candlelight cast a warm glow across the table set with all his favorites—rare venison steaks, roasted root vegetables with herbs from our pack garden, and blackberry tarts for dessert.

"Conrad?" I reached out through our mate bond, seeking that familiar warmth that had been my anchor since we were sixteen. "I'm putting dinner on the table soon."

Nothing.

I frowned, pressing my fingers to my temple. "Conrad, can you hear me?"

The silence in our bond stretched on, unusual and unsettling. Then suddenly—static. Sharp, painful interference that made me gasp as it sliced through our connection.

"Valentina?" Elena, our pack healer, found me doubled over, clutching my chest.

"I'm fine," I lied, straightening quickly. "Just a momentary discomfort."

But it wasn't fine. The pain lingered, a hollow ache where our bond should have been warm and vibrant. Something was wrong.

"The moonflowers are beautiful," Elena commented, her eyes darting nervously toward the door. "Are you expecting company?"

"Just Conrad," I replied, studying her expression. "Is everything alright in the pack?"

"Of course," she answered too quickly. "I should go."

As she hurried away, I caught a glimpse of her trembling hands. Another oddity to add to the growing list.

I tried the bond again, focusing harder. "Conrad, where are you?"

This time, the static was worse—a stabbing pain that made me cry out. But beneath it, I caught fragments of voices. Conrad's deep timbre, Zayden's measured tones, and Lachlan's clipped responses.

"—can't risk her finding out—"

"—the arrangement must remain secret—"

"—what's best for the pack's future—"

I moved toward Conrad's study, following the thread of their voices. The door was slightly ajar, and I could see the three of them standing close together, expressions tense.

"What's happening?" I asked from the doorway.

Three heads snapped toward me, and the conversation died instantly.

"Valentina," Conrad recovered first, his Alpha mask sliding into place. "We were just discussing pack business."

"Pack business that requires secrecy?" I stepped into the room, noting how they shifted subtly to block my view of the documents on his desk.

"Routine matters," Conrad said dismissively. "Nothing that concerns Luna duties."

The words stung more than they should have. In five years, he had never excluded me from pack discussions.

"But I thought—"

"Your dinner is ready," he interrupted, kissing my cheek perfunctorily. "We'll continue this later."

Zayden and Lachlan wouldn't meet my eyes as they filed out, leaving me alone with my mate who suddenly felt like a stranger.

---

Two weeks later, the pack buzzed with unusual activity. I stood on the balcony overlooking the main courtyard, watching as pack members gathered in excited clusters.

"What's happening?" I asked the guard standing nearby.

"Luna, there's someone returning to pack territory," he explained. "A wolfless from years ago."

My interest piqued, I descended to greet this newcomer. A small crowd had formed around a slender woman clutching a young child to her hip.

"Ophelia Gardner," someone whispered behind me.

I remembered her vaguely—a girl from our high school years who'd left after failing to awaken her wolf. Now she stood before us, more beautiful than I recalled, with wide eyes and a trembling lower lip that somehow commanded attention.

"Please," she said softly, her voice carrying across the suddenly hushed courtyard. "I've nowhere else to go."

Before I could step forward as Luna, three figures pushed past me.

"Ophelia," Conrad's voice held an urgency I rarely heard. "You're safe now."

Zayden moved to her other side, his Beta authority radiating protectiveness. "We'll take care of you."

Lachlan positioned himself behind her, his warrior stance making it clear no one would approach without permission.

I stood frozen as my mate and closest pack members surrounded this stranger, their concern palpable and overwhelming.

"Thank you," Ophelia whispered, her eyes downcast as she clutched her child tighter. "I didn't know where else to turn."

The little boy—about three years old—peered curiously at the gathered wolves. As he turned his face fully toward me, I studied his features with growing confusion.

No wolf child I knew had eyes that color. No pack bloodline I recognized ran through his features.

"Why is she receiving this level of protection?" I murmured to Elena beside me.

The healer's eyes widened in warning. "Don't question it, Luna. Not yet."

As Conrad lifted the child gently from Ophelia's arms, something cold settled in my stomach. The way he held the boy—with reverence and determination—made my skin crawl with unease.

What was happening to my pack? To my mate?

And why did no one think I deserved to know?
