Chapter 1

I should have known something was wrong when Edward started coming home smelling like vanilla.

But on that Tuesday evening—Teacher Appreciation Day—I was curled up on the leather sofa in our pack house living room, scrolling mindlessly through the Silverpine Pack's private social media group. Kasen was supposedly doing homework upstairs. Edward was at yet another "pack council meeting" that would run late. The house felt too quiet, too empty, the way it had been feeling for months now.

My thumb paused mid-scroll.

The photo was innocent enough at first glance—just another snapshot from the school's Teacher Appreciation luncheon. Several pack mothers had posted pictures throughout the day: plates of catered food, flower arrangements, smiling teachers posing with gift baskets. This particular image showed Celine Matthews, Kasen's homeroom teacher, standing beside the refreshment table. Her smile was coy, almost smug, as she held her wrist up to the camera in that universal gesture of showing off jewelry.

The bracelet caught the afternoon light, gleaming rose gold against her pale skin.

My wolf stirred uneasily in my chest, a prickling sensation crawling up my spine.

I zoomed in, my heart beginning to pound. The design was unmistakable—interlocking ovals, the signature screws, the delicate craftsmanship. A Cartier Love bracelet. I'd admired that exact piece in a catalog three months ago, tracing my finger over the glossy page while Edward glanced over my shoulder. "Too extravagant for a Luna," he'd said, his voice dismissive. "We need to be mindful of pack expenses."

Fifteen thousand dollars. I remembered the price because it had made me laugh at my own foolishness for even looking.

My hands trembled as I zoomed in further, studying every pixel. Maybe I was wrong. Maybe it was a knockoff, some cheap imitation she'd bought online. Teachers didn't wear authentic Cartier. They couldn't afford—

The reflection in the bistro window behind her stopped my breath entirely.

It was subtle, easy to miss if you weren't looking. But I was looking now, my wolf's instincts screaming alarm. In the glass, partially obscured by the angle, a man's hand reached toward Celine's wrist. The hand wore a distinctive ring—thick gold band, the Silverpine Pack crest carved into onyx, the Alpha's signet that Edward never removed.

My mate's hand. Fastening a fifteen-thousand-dollar bracelet onto my son's teacher's wrist.

The phone slipped from my fingers, clattering onto the hardwood floor.

My wolf howled—not outwardly, but inside my mind, a sound of pure anguish that reverberated through my entire being. The mate bond, that sacred connection I'd treasured for ten years, suddenly felt wrong. Corrupted. Like something beautiful had rotted from the inside out, and I'd been too blind to notice the smell.

I pressed my hand against my chest, trying to breathe through the sensation. It wasn't physical pain, not exactly. It was worse—a spiritual violation, the Moon Goddess's blessed bond twisted into something sickly and dark.

How long had this been happening?

I retrieved my phone with shaking hands, screenshotting the image, zooming in on that damning reflection until the pixels blurred. Then I opened my text thread with Edward. My fingers hovered over the keyboard.

What was I supposed to say? I saw you bought my son's teacher a Cartier bracelet? It sounded insane even in my own head. Maybe there was an explanation. Maybe the pack had taken up a collection for an extravagant teacher gift. Maybe—

No.

My wolf snarled, rejecting every excuse my human mind tried to construct. She knew. On some primal level, she'd known for months—every late meeting, every unexplained absence, every time Edward's scent carried traces of vanilla perfume he'd claim came from hugging grateful pack members.

I'd ignored her warnings because I was a good Luna. Because I trusted my mate. Because I'd spent ten years making myself smaller, quieter, more accommodating, convinced that was what love required.

I pulled up the pack directory and found Eleanor Walsh's number—my former mentor, the pack's elderly healer, the woman who was supposed to have passed her sacred calling to me before I'd abandoned that destiny to be Edward's perfect Luna.

"Eleanor," I said when she answered, my voice surprisingly steady. "I need to know the signs of a corrupted mate bond."

The silence on the other end stretched long enough that I thought the call had dropped.

"Oh, child," she finally whispered, and the sorrow in those two words told me everything I needed to know. "Come to my cottage. Now."

I stood, leaving my phone on the sofa, and walked to the front door. My reflection caught in the hallway mirror—a thirty-two-year-old Luna with auburn hair pulled back in a practical ponytail, wearing yoga pants and one of Edward's old pack t-shirts, looking every bit the devoted mate and mother I'd worked so hard to become.

That woman was a stranger to me now.

My wolf's eyes flashed amber in the mirror's surface, and for the first time in ten years, I felt her not as a separate entity I'd suppressed for Edward's comfort, but as a part of me I'd been slowly killing.

No more.
