Chapter 4

Dawn came cold and gray. I stood at the edge of the training grounds in human form, my breath misting in the early air. Twenty pack warriors surrounded me in a loose semicircle. Their eyes were flat. Professional. This was routine for them.

Bryce stood at the far end of the field. He didn't look at me directly. He looked through me, the way he had since I returned.

"Shift," he said.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist. Then I reached for Sable.

She didn't come.

*Please,* I whispered internally. *I need you.*

Nothing. Just silence where her voice should have been.

One of the warriors shifted beside me. His wolf was dark brown, heavily muscled, built for endurance runs. Another shifted on my left. Then another. The air filled with the sound of bones restructuring, fabric tearing, low growls settling into readiness.

I closed my eyes and reached deeper.

*Sable. Please.*

This time, she stirred. Barely. Like something waking from a long, painful sleep.

The shift hit me all at once. Not smooth. Not natural. My bones cracked and reformed with an agony I hadn't felt since my first awakening. My spine arched. My hands hit the ground as paws — pale silver, smaller than they should have been. The world sharpened into scent and sound.

But something was wrong.

Sable's form felt diminished. Weak. Her coat, which should have gleamed Moon-Blessed silver, looked dull in the early light. I could feel her exhaustion like a weight pressing down on my chest.

*I'm here,* she whispered. Her voice was thin. Fragile. *I'm here.*

Bryce's voice cut through the cold. "Run."

The enforcers took off. I followed.

The terrain was brutal — steep mountain trails, loose rock, dense forest that required constant navigation. The pack warriors moved with practiced efficiency, their wolves bred for this kind of endurance. I pushed Sable as hard as I could.

Ten minutes in, my legs started shaking.

Twenty minutes in, my breathing turned ragged.

Thirty minutes in, I fell behind. The gap widened. The enforcers didn't slow. They weren't supposed to.

Forty minutes in, my front leg buckled.

I went down hard. My shoulder hit a tree root. The impact jarred through me, and the shift — already fragile — collapsed entirely. One moment I was wolf. The next I was human, my face pressed against cold earth, my hands scraped raw.

I tried to push myself up. My arms wouldn't hold.

Sable said nothing. She was just... gone. Silent.

Footsteps approached. Heavy. Deliberate. Two enforcers in human form lifted me without ceremony. One under my arms, one at my knees. My head lolled against someone's chest. The forest blurred around me.

Then everything went dark.

I woke in the healer's wing. The ceiling was white. Sterile. The scent of antiseptic and wolfsbane ointment filled my nose. My body ached in places I didn't have names for.

Maren Cole, the pack healer, stood at the foot of the bed. She was older, her hair streaked with gray, her expression professionally neutral. "You collapsed mid-shift," she said quietly. "Your wolf is severely weakened. Three years of suppression did more damage than you realized."

I tried to sit up. Pain shot through my ribs. I stopped.

"Rest," Maren said. "You need at least two days before you can walk without assistance."

She left. The door closed softly behind her.

I stared at the ceiling and pressed my thumb against my wrist. Sable didn't stir.

The door opened again an hour later. I expected Maren. Instead, Amelie walked in.

She closed the door behind her. Locked it. The soft click echoed in the small room.

Her expression was different now. The gentle concern from the gathering hall was gone. What remained was flat. Precise. Clinical.

"You should leave," she said.

I didn't move. "This is my pack."

"No," Amelie corrected. "It was your pack. Now it's mine." She stepped closer to the bed. Her hand rested on her belly. The gesture looked habitual now. Practiced. "Bryce has what he needs. An heir. A Luna. A stable succession. You are a complication."

"The Moon Goddess—"

"The Moon Goddess," Amelie interrupted, "is not standing in this room. I am." She tilted her head slightly. "I noticed your drafting case. The Whispering Valley blueprints. Interesting work. Very detailed. Very... personal."

My blood went cold.

"If you leave quietly," Amelie continued, her voice almost gentle now, "this can end without further unpleasantness. No more public gatherings. No more punishment runs. You simply go. Cleanly. Permanently."

I looked at her. Really looked. Her eyes were calm. Steady. She believed every word she was saying.

"And if I don't?" I asked.

Amelie smiled. It didn't reach her eyes. "Then I will make sure everyone sees exactly what you are. A bitter, unstable she-wolf who can't accept that her mate chose someone else."

She walked to the door. Unlocked it. Paused with her hand on the handle.

"Think about it," she said. Then she left.

I lay in the healer's bed, bruised and exhausted, and said nothing.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist.

I did not leave.

Two days later, I returned to my guest room. The door was unlocked. I stepped inside and froze.

My drafting case sat open on the desk. The leather straps hung loose. The interior was empty.

The Whispering Valley blueprints were gone.

Every structural drawing. Every Moon-Blessed annotation. Every private sketch honoring my parents' architectural philosophy. Two years of work. The only physical record of the sanctuary I had designed as their tribute.

Gone.

I searched the room methodically. Under the bed. In the closet. Behind the dresser. Nothing.

I walked through the pack house with controlled, deliberate steps. I checked the common areas. The library. The archives. My hands were steady. My expression was calm.

I found Amelie in the main hallway near the Luna suite. She was speaking with two pack members, her voice warm and engaged. When she saw me, she smiled.

"Elora," she said brightly. "You're feeling better. I'm so glad."

I stopped three feet away. "My blueprints are missing."

Amelie blinked. Confusion settled across her features with practiced ease. "Your blueprints?"

"The Whispering Valley designs. They were in my room. Now they're not."

"Oh." Amelie's hand moved to her belly. "I'm sorry, I don't know anything about that. Have you checked with the pack archives? Sometimes documents get moved during cleaning."

The two pack members — warriors, both male, both watching me with the wariness reserved for unstable wolves — shifted slightly. One of them cleared his throat. "Is there a problem?"

I looked at Amelie. Her expression was open. Concerned. Perfectly innocent.

"No," I said quietly. "No problem."

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I heard Amelie's voice, soft and sympathetic. "Poor thing. The stress must be getting to her."

I returned to my guest room. I sat on the edge of the bed in the dark.

Sable stirred. Just barely. *We are alone here,* she whispered.

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and held myself very, very still.

I understood, with absolute clarity, that I was alone in a territory that should have been my home.
