Chapter 2

I waited until morning to ask for the meeting. Not because I needed time to prepare — I had been preparing for three years — but because showing up at his door in the middle of the night would look like desperation. And I was not desperate. I was his fated mate. The Moon Goddess had chosen us. This was a formality.

I found Bryce in his office just after eight. The door was open. He was standing at the window with his back to me, looking out over the training grounds where a group of younger wolves were running drills. His scent hit me before I crossed the threshold — pine and thunderstorm, so familiar it hurt.

"Bryce," I said quietly.

He turned. His expression was careful. Neutral. "Elora."

"I'd like to speak with you. Privately."

He nodded once. "Of course." Then he reached for the phone on his desk and pressed a button. "Declan, come to my office."

I blinked. "I said privately."

"Declan is my Beta," Bryce said. "He'll observe. Pack protocol."

Protocol. The word sat wrong in my mouth. Fated mates didn't need protocol. But I didn't argue. I stepped inside and waited.

Declan arrived two minutes later — a man in his early thirties with sharp eyes and a posture that said he missed nothing. He nodded at me politely and took a position near the door. Silent. Watching.

Bryce gestured to the chair across from his desk. I sat. He remained standing.

"You wanted to talk," he said.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist. A small gesture. Steadying. "We're fated mates, Bryce. The bond is real. You felt it the same way I did."

"I did," he said. His voice was even. "Three years ago."

"The bond doesn't expire," I said. "It doesn't change because time passed."

"No," he agreed. "But circumstances do."

I looked at him. Really looked. His jaw was tight. His hands were loose at his sides, but there was tension in his shoulders. He was holding himself like a man bracing for impact.

"Amelie is carrying your heir," I said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"And you believe that supersedes the bond the Moon Goddess gave us."

He didn't answer immediately. He turned back toward the window. "I need time to assess the pack's stability before making any decisions about the bond."

The words landed flat. Clinical. Like he was discussing a construction project.

"Assess," I repeated.

"Yes."

"The Moon Goddess doesn't require assessment, Bryce. She requires a fated bond to be honored."

He looked at me then. His eyes moved to my neck — the mark-point, the place where his teeth should have been three years ago — and then away. Fast. Like it burned to look at.

"I have responsibilities," he said quietly. "To the pack. To my heir. I can't make decisions based solely on—" He stopped.

"On what?" I asked. My voice was calm. Too calm. "On the bond the Moon Goddess herself chose for you?"

Declan shifted near the door. I didn't look at him.

Bryce's jaw tightened. "I'm not rejecting you, Elora. I'm asking for time."

"How much time?"

"I don't know."

I stood. My legs were steady. "You sent me your coordinates every day for three years. Every single day. I memorized them like a heartbeat. And now you're telling me you need time to decide if the bond matters."

He said nothing.

I turned and walked out. Declan stepped aside to let me pass. I didn't look back.

Sable was silent. She didn't whimper. She didn't rage. She just went very, very still.

That afternoon, I was walking through the main corridor of the pack house when Amelie appeared. She materialized from a side hallway like she'd been waiting. Her smile was soft. Concerned.

"Elora," she said. "I wanted to check on you. This situation must be so difficult."

I stopped. Two pack warriors were standing near the staircase, close enough to hear every word. They weren't looking at us directly, but they were listening. I could tell by the way they held themselves.

Amelie's hand rested on her belly. The gesture looked natural. Maternal. "I know this isn't what you expected when you came home," she continued. "But I hope you understand — the pack's future is at stake. Bryce's heir is everything."

I looked at her. She was good. Her voice was gentle. Her expression was open. If I didn't know better, I would think she actually cared.

"The Luna suite's nursery is nearly ready," she added. "The pack's healers have been so attentive during the pregnancy. Everyone is very excited."

Every word was a marker. A boundary line.

I kept my voice even. "The Moon Goddess does not require your nursery timeline. She requires a fated bond."

Amelie's expression didn't change. Not even a flicker. "Of course," she said softly. "I'm sure Bryce will make the right decision. For everyone."

She turned and walked away. The two warriors followed her with their eyes.

I stood in the corridor alone.

Sable stirred. *She is not his mate,* my wolf said quietly. *We are.*

I pressed my thumb against my wrist and kept walking.

Three days later, the pack gathering was announced. A "welcome ceremony" for my return, the notice said. Formal. Open to all pack members. I should have seen it coming.

I didn't.

The gathering was set for the main hall at seven in the evening. When I arrived, the space was already full — pack members lined the walls, elders seated in the front rows, warriors stationed near the exits. And at the far end of the room, a large screen displayed a video link. Three other packs, their Alphas visible in separate frames, watching.

Amelie stood near the front, her hand resting on her belly. Bryce was beside her.

I walked in and felt every eye turn toward me.

Sable went very still.

*Trap,* she whispered.

I kept walking.
