Rejected by My Alpha Mate While He Spoiled His Mistress Chapter 1
At 8:04 PM, during the sacred fifth year of our mating ceremony, Hunter pulled me against his chest for the public embrace.
The moment my cheek hit the wool of his ceremonial cloak, the scent struck me like a physical blow.
It wasn't his usual fresh pine and cedar. It was honeysuckle and dark amber—thick, intimate, and unmistakably layered from months of skin-to-skin contact. Another she-wolf’s scent was ground deep into the fabric.
On the right side of my neck, the mark he gave me five years ago went ice-cold. It felt dead, like a heavy wooden door slamming shut in an empty room. Deep inside my chest, the wolf who had remained silent and asleep my entire life stirred, letting out a sharp, keening whimper of absolute agony: *betrayal.*
My hands shook against the lapels of his tunic. Hunter didn't even notice. He smiled over my head at the hundreds of cheering Ironveil pack members, playing the part of the devoted Alpha.
"Steady, Colette," he murmured under his breath, his voice lacking any real warmth. "Remember your focus. Don't let your emotions flare. You know affection weakens your wards."
For five years, I believed that lie. I believed him when he rationed his touches to once a month, when he blocked our mate bond with mental walls, telling me that feeding me affection would destabilize my magical energy.
I swallowed the scream in my throat. I forced my chin up, smiled for the pack cameras, and stood by his side until the last elder offered their congratulations.
The moment Hunter left to drink with the warriors, I followed the trail of honeysuckle up the grand staircase.
It led straight to his private study.
I used a silver hairpin to pick the brass lock on his bottom desk drawer. Inside sat three black velvet boxes. When I flipped them open, rare cut moonstones gleamed in the dim light—stones worth tens of thousands of dollars. In five years as his Luna, I had never received a single gem. Tucked under the velvet were handwritten notes on heavy parchment, written in the looping, delicate handwriting of Hayley Vasquez.
*To my Alpha. Count the days until the lakeside cabin. All my love, H.*
Beneath the letters lay a thick, leather-bound journal. I turned the pages, and the blood drained completely from my face.
It was a transcribed record of an encrypted mind-link channel. Hunter had bypassed our pack's main network to build a private line with Hayley. Five years of secret conversations. Pages of poured-out adoration, pet names, and lavish compliments.
And then, dated just two weeks ago, in Hunter’s own handwriting:
*Don't worry about Colette suspecting us. She’s just a useful little ward-witch. Keep her starved of praise, and she works twice as hard to earn a scrap of it. She won't ever look elsewhere.*
I sat down slowly in his leather armchair. I placed the open boxes of moonstones on my lap.
The pain inside me burned away, leaving behind a cold, terrifying stillness.
Deep inside my consciousness, the dormant wolf didn't whimper this time. She bared her fangs. A low, thunderous snarl ripped through my mind, vibrating with pure, coherent fury.
*No more.*

The following evening, the pack house dining hall was packed for the traditional Luna's banquet.
I spent eight hours in the kitchen overseeing every detail personally. When the servers brought out the platters, the Ironveil council members dug in with their usual appetite—and immediately froze.
Gideon, Hunter’s Beta, chewed his roast beef with a look of utter disgust, struggling to swallow. The pack elders glanced at each other in bewilderment.
The beef had no salt, no pepper, no seasoning. It tasted like damp cardboard. The bread was hard, gray, and flat. The ceremonial wine had been watered down until it was completely pale, tasting only of tap water.
Hunter grabbed his goblet, took a mouthful, and spat it back onto the linen tablecloth.
"What the hell is this?" Hunter snapped, his face reddening. He turned his glare toward me and unleashed his Alpha tone—a heavy, crushing wave of supernatural pressure meant to force submission. "Colette! Explain this insult right now."
The Alpha tone washed over me. For years, it had made me drop my eyes and apologize. But tonight, my awakened blood rejected it instantly. The command rolled off my shoulders like water on stone.
I stood up slowly, smoothing the silver silk of my dress. The entire hall went dead silent, shocked that I hadn't bowed.
"For five years, Hunter, this is what my mate bond has tasted like," I said, my voice calm, flat, and carrying to every corner of the room. "Empty. Bland. Completely starved of substance. I only wanted the pack council to taste what I have been swallowing in silence while keeping your borders safe."
Hunter’s eyes narrowed into slits. "You're humiliating yourself. Sit down before I have Gideon drag you out."
"You don't have the authority to drag me anywhere," I said quietly.
I reached into the sleeve of my dress and pulled out a heavy parchment roll, yellowed with centuries of age and stamped with the raised crimson wax of the royal Lycan crest.
I broke the royal wax with a sharp snap that echoed like a gunshot.
"This is an original Lycan Court blood-decree, granted two hundred years ago to the maternal line of Lane," I announced, looking directly into Hunter's stunned eyes. "This land, this pack house, and every acre within the Ironveil border belongs solely to my bloodline. You, Alpha Hunter Fox, have been living on my property."
Hunter lunged across the table, his claws ripping through the tablecloth as he reached to tear the document from my hand.
