Rejected by My Alpha Mate, Burned Alive for His Mistress Chapter 1

The wolfsbane hit my neck at 9:47 PM.

I felt the needle pierce skin before I saw the rogue's face. Cold liquid flooded my veins. My wolf screamed inside my skull — not pain, not yet, just recognition. Wolfsbane. Concentrated. The kind that stops a heart in minutes.

I hit the ground.

Around me, the battle continued. Claws on dirt. Snarls cutting through smoke. My vision blurred at the edges, but I could still see Vienna twenty feet away, crumpled against a tree, her chest heaving. A rogue stood over her, syringe still in hand. The same kind that had just emptied into me.

My limbs seized. The paralysis spread fast — fingers first, then arms, then the terrible stillness creeping toward my lungs. I tried to shift. My wolf convulsed once and went silent.

Then I smelled him.

Cedar and iron. Landon's scent cut through the smoke and blood like a command. The mate bond flared hot on my side — just for a second, the way it always did when he was close — and then went cold. Not absent. Cold. Like a hand pulling away from skin.

I turned my head. It took everything I had left.

Landon stood fifteen feet from me, his wolf-form massive and dark against the firelight. He was looking at me. I know he was. His eyes met mine for one breath. Two.

Then he moved toward Vienna.

I watched him shift mid-stride, human again by the time he reached her. He dropped to his knees beside her, uncapped a vial from his belt — Alpha blood, the only antidote strong enough for concentrated wolfsbane — and opened his own wrist with a claw. Blood welled dark and fast.

He pressed his wrist to Vienna's mouth.

"Vienna," he said. His voice was rough. Urgent. "Stay with me."

My wolf made one last sound inside my head. Not a howl. Something smaller. Something that knew.

Then my heart stopped.

I don't remember the twenty minutes after. The pack warriors told me later. They found me facedown in the dirt, my lips already blue. Ryder, Landon's Beta, cracked three of my ribs trying to restart my heart. It took four attempts.

When I woke, the bond was still there. But it felt different. Hollow. Like a room with all the furniture removed.

---

The infirmary smelled like disinfectant and old blood. My chest ached with every breath — the ribs, I realized, remembering what Ryder must have done. I tried to sit up. Pain lanced through my torso and I gasped, falling back against the pillow.

Footsteps. The door opened.

Landon stood at the foot of my bed, arms crossed, watching me with an expression I couldn't read. Not guilt. Not quite relief either. Something in between.

"You're awake," he said.

I stared at him. My throat was dry. "Vienna?"

"She's fine. Recovering in her quarters."

Of course she was.

I swallowed. It hurt. Everything hurt. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the cold, empty channel where the bond used to hum.

"You chose her," I said. My voice came out flat. Steady. I was surprised by that.

Landon's jaw tightened. "There was only enough antidote for one dose. I made a call."

"You made a choice."

"Morgan—"

"I want a formal rejection."

The words fell between us like stones.

Landon went very still. Then he moved, closing the distance between us in two strides. He leaned over the bed, his hands braced on either side of my shoulders, his face inches from mine.

And then I felt it.

The Alpha tone rolled out of him like a physical force, vibrating through my bones, pressing down on my wolf until she flattened inside me, silent and paralyzed.

"You will never speak those words again," he said. His voice was low. Absolute. "Do you understand me?"

I tried to answer. My jaw locked. The bond forced my mouth shut mid-breath, my wolf whimpering uselessly under the weight of his command.

Landon straightened. He smoothed my hair back from my forehead — a gesture that might have looked tender to anyone watching.

"You're confused," he said quietly. "The wolfsbane is still in your system. You don't know what you're saying."

He turned and left.

I lay in the dark, my cracked ribs pressing against the bandages, my jaw still aching from where the Alpha tone had forced it shut.

And I began, very quietly, to plan.

---

Two days later, I walked into the pack-law archives.

The archivist — an older wolf named Thane who had always been kind to me — looked up from his desk and smiled. "Luna. What can I help you with?"

"I need to review some administrative documents," I said. "Luna duties. Budgets and territory filings."

He nodded and waved me toward the back room. "Take your time."

I spent three hours in that room. I moved through the shelves methodically, pulling files on mate-bond law, Luna authority, and pack dissolution frameworks. And then I found it.

The Luna Renunciation Decree.

I read it twice. Then I photographed every page with my phone.

The decree was simple. Brutal in its simplicity. Once signed by the Alpha, it formally and irreversibly severed the mate bond. It stripped the Luna title. It extinguished all parental claim on any offspring.

And it had to be buried in a stack of routine paperwork to avoid recognition.

I thought of Landon at his desk, scanning documents with barely concealed impatience, signing the final line without reading the pages above it. I had watched him do it a hundred times.

I returned the files to their shelves. I thanked Thane on my way out.

That night, I sat at my desk in the Luna quarters and began drafting.

---

Vienna came the next afternoon.

I was reviewing pack budgets when the door opened. She walked in without knocking, carrying a glass bottle filled with amber liquid.

"Healing tonic," she said, setting it on the table. "From the healers. For your ribs."

I looked at her. She looked back. And then she smiled.

"Close the door," she said.

I didn't move.

She closed it herself. Then she turned to face me, and the practiced sweetness dropped from her expression like a mask falling.

"You want to know why he chose me?" she said.

I said nothing.

"We have a mind-link," she continued. Her voice was low. Conversational. "Have for years. Every night you spend in his bed, he's talking to me. Every time you think he's working late in his office, he's with me. Not physically. But where it matters."

She walked to the window, her back half-turned.

"He told me your wolf is an embarrassment," she said. "That your painting is a waste of his time. That he endures the bond because the Moon Goddess demands it. But he's never wanted it. Not once."

She let the words sit.

I sat very still, my hands folded in my lap, my face composed.

Vienna glanced back at me. "Nothing to say?"

I met her eyes. "Are you finished?"

She laughed. A soft, surprised sound. Then she left.

I waited until her footsteps faded down the hall. Then I stood, walked to the stone wall, and pressed my forehead against it. My cracked ribs ached. My wolf made no sound.

I stayed there for thirty seconds.

Then I straightened, returned to my desk, and continued drafting the decree.
