Chapter 1

The words hit me at 8:47, right as the torches on the dais flared higher for effect. "I, Cullen Armstrong, Alpha of Ironveil, reject you, Adrianna Hudson, as my mate and Luna." The mark on my neck went from warm to white-hot in the space of one heartbeat, like someone had pressed a brand straight into the bone beneath my skin.

Three hundred wolves stood in that clearing. I felt every one of their eyes on me instead of him.

My knees buckled first. The ground tilted, torchlight smearing into gold streaks, and for a second all I could hear was my own pulse slamming in my ears. Zuri's hand was flat against Cullen's chest, right over his heart, like she was holding him up instead of the other way around. She was smiling.

I did not fall.

I locked my knees, planted my feet, and made myself stand up straight inside the ringing white noise of my own skull. Cullen watched me the way a man watches a door he's certain is about to break off its hinges. Waiting for me to sob. Waiting for me to scream his name and beg him to take it back.

I looked him dead in the eye and said nothing.

No echo. No acceptance. Pack law is precise about this — a rejection isn't finished until both sides speak it. I let the silence stretch until his triumphant expression started to curdle, confusion first, then something uglier underneath it. Zuri's smirk faltered for exactly one second before she smoothed it back into place. The murmurs started at the edges of the crowd and rolled inward like a tide.

I turned and walked back to the Luna quarters with my spine straight and my mark still burning like a coal under my collar.

Alone in the bathroom, I let myself have one breath. Just one. I pressed my thumb hard against the mark and slid down the cold tile wall until I was sitting on the floor, and through the bond — still open, still humming, because he hadn't finished what he started — I felt him. Smug. Hot with satisfaction. Somewhere with Zuri, wherever he'd taken her to celebrate, and I rode the wave of his gloating like swallowing glass, rigid, silent, until it passed.

Then I got up, pulled the loose floorboard, and took out the ledger.

*Public rejection ceremony. Three hundred witnesses. Value: $200,000.*

I closed it and went to bed.

By morning I was Luna again. Hair pinned, dress pressed, greeting the visiting Delta from the Ashwood pack by name at the breakfast table as if the torches last night had never guttered at all. I poured Cullen's coffee, set it by his right hand, sat without looking at him. Across the table Zuri leaned into his shoulder, loud with her laugh, and he let her.

Something low rumbled in my chest — faint, unfamiliar, gone almost before I registered it. I drank my coffee and said nothing.

He cornered me that afternoon outside my own door, one fist slamming into the wall an inch from my head. "Accept it," he snapped, and I felt the pull of his Alpha tone underneath the words, thick and commanding, dragging at something instinctive in my spine. "You're humiliating yourself, Adrianna. Everyone saw you fold. Just say the words."

My knees dipped — just slightly — every wolf passing in the hall behind him dropping their eyes on reflex. I gripped the wall and forced myself upright.

"I'll accept the rejection," I said, flat, even, "when my father walks out of the silver cells. Not before."

I stepped around his arm and walked away. His aura flared behind me, hot enough to prickle the hair on my arms, and I did not flinch, did not slow down, did not give him the satisfaction of my back stiffening.

In my room, I locked the door and opened the ledger again.

*Alpha tone used in private corridor. Partial compliance, full recovery. No witnesses — no monetary value. Note: the bond held. His control is contingent on my acceptance. As long as I withhold it, I have the only leverage he cannot buy or command away.*

I pressed the pen down hard enough to score through the paper, then shut the journal.

The rumble came again, low in my chest — longer this time, steadier, almost like approval.

Outside my door, footsteps stopped. Cullen's. I could hear him standing there, breathing, his fist probably still curled from the wall he'd hit ten minutes ago. Then, slowly, the footsteps turned and walked away down the hall — toward Zuri's wing, not his own.
