Chapter 1

At 2:17 in the morning, the mate mark on my neck turned to absolute ice.

Alpha Max Evans stood three feet from me in the drafty border cabin, his warriors flanking him in silent formation. He smelled of sweat, melting snow, and sweet almond blossom—Katelyn Taylor’s heavy perfume clinging to the collar of his wool coat. He hadn’t even bothered to wash her off before summoning me into the cold.

"I, Max Evans, Alpha of the Ironridge Pack, reject you, Genevieve Morgan, as my mate and Luna."

The vow hit like an iron spike through my skull. The heat drained from my throat, leaving a hollow, freezing numbness in its place, like a door slamming shut in an abandoned house. Deep in my ribs, my wolf woke with a feral, vicious snarl, lunging forward to tear his throat out. But before her fangs could strike, the severed bond snapped back like a frayed wire. The psychic recoil crushed her down into total, pitch-black silence.

Max lifted his chin. His Alpha tone dropped over the room like a slab of wet stone. *"Accept it and stand down."*

The command tried to force my knees to the floorboards. My teeth ground together so hard my jaw ached, and my nails bit into my palms until I felt the hot smear of blood. But I didn't drop. I didn't blink. I stood upright and looked directly into his amber eyes.

Max looked away first. "Katelyn’s outpost collapsed under the snow. She needs me."

Without another word, he stripped his coat, shifted into his massive brown wolf, and bounded out into the roaring blizzard. The six warriors surged after him, their paws pounding against the timber before vanishing into the whiteout.

The door banged open against the frame, letting the storm howl inside.

The mind-link was dead. The constant, low hum of pack thoughts that had lived in the back of my mind for seven years had gone completely mute.

I pressed two fingers hard against the pulse point of my opposite wrist, steadying my breath. *Mom.*

I tried to push a thought down the empty corridor of my mind toward the pack healer’s ward. Nothing answered. Only the flat, ringing buzz of static. Over and over, through three hours of darkness, I pushed against the wall in my head until my temples throbbed.

*Mom. Please hear me. Answer.*

Silence.

At daybreak, a border scout found me sitting beside the dead hearth, shivering in my coat. He didn't speak. He wouldn't even look me in the face as he drove the truck back to the central packhouse. His averted eyes told me everything.

I ran straight to the infirmary wing.

The smell of antiseptic and dried sage hit me first. The on-duty healer stood outside room four with a clipboard in his hands. When he saw me, he looked down at the linoleum floor.

"She passed around four," the healer said softly. "Her lungs gave out. She was calling for you across the link until the very end, Genevieve. We couldn't get through to you."

Four in the morning. Less than two hours after Max severed my bond and cut the line.

I didn't cry. I didn't scream. My fingers pressed into my wrist, feeling my own heart pump blood through a body that felt entirely hollow. I walked into the room, kissed my mother’s cold forehead, and pulled the sheet over her face.

By late afternoon, the pack had already moved on.

Word of the rejection had spread faster than the storm. The omegas who used to greet me with warm smiles hurried past with downcast eyes. Max’s Beta walked past me in the corridor without breaking stride, looking straight through me as if I were glass. I had spent four years running their supply lines, managing their seasonal budgets, and organizing the healer schedules that kept their patrols alive. None of it mattered. Without Max’s mark, I was less than nobody.

I buried my mother at dusk in the frozen dirt at the edge of the pack cemetery. No elders attended. Max was still sixty miles away at Katelyn's outpost, playing the hero.

The wind whipped dead leaves across the fresh mound of earth. I reached into my pocket and closed my fingers around the small cloth pouch she had given me years ago, filled with dried night-blooming jasmine. The scent was faint, sweet, and clean.

Standing over the grave, the last shred of softness in my chest turned to steel. I had shrunk myself for years to fit into Max’s shadow. I had abandoned my own life to keep his territory running while he chased another woman.

I was done making myself small.

I walked back into the packhouse at midnight, while the halls were dark and quiet. I unlocked the administrative records vault with the key I still carried.

I didn't take gold or pack assets. Instead, I pulled every commercial supply agreement I had negotiated with the southern territories over the last three years—every contract that bore only my signature and personal seal. I pulled the master distributor rosters for medicinal wolfsbane antidotes, names and private contact codes that belonged to me, not the Evans bloodline.

Then I went to my mother’s old locker in the back of the dispensary. From the hidden floorboard beneath her footlocker, I pulled out a sealed manila envelope. Inside was her silver locket, a small stack of letters, and my original master certification from the Northern Healer Guild—a high-ranking license I had earned in secret before Max convinced me my place was by his side.

Ironridge had survived the last three winters entirely on my paperwork and my trade connections. Without them, their medicine and grain shipments would halt by the end of the month.

I packed my clothes into a single duffel bag, slid the documents into the interior pocket, and tucked my mother’s jasmine pouch next to my chest.

Down at the southern perimeter gate, the lone guard was leaning inside the heated sentry shack. The pack’s shortwave radio crackled loudly on the desk, cutting through the frosty air.

Max’s voice came through the speaker, crisp and arrogant.

*"We're heading back now. Have the master suite cleared out by noon tomorrow. Katelyn is moving in, and she wants Genevieve's things burned."*

The guard reached for the mic to acknowledge the order.

I pulled my hood over my head, stepped past the open gate, and crossed the border line into the dark.
