Chapter 5

I woke to white light and a silence I had never felt before.

Not the silence of an empty room. Not the silence of a house asleep. This was deeper. Older. I lay on the infirmary cot and reached inward, the way I always did without thinking, the way you reach for your own heartbeat — and found nothing. No warmth curled at the edge of my mind. No faint whimper. No presence at all.

My wolf was gone.

Not dead. I would have felt dead. This was worse. She had gone somewhere so far inside me that I couldn't find the door anymore. I lay there and stared at the water stain on the ceiling, shaped like a bent wing, and I understood with total clarity that this — this hollow, echoing quiet — frightened me more than the convulsions, more than the foam on my lips, more than Christopher's voice forcing the spoon to my mouth.

He had broken things in me before. My pride. My hope. My belief that patience was a virtue that eventually paid its debts. But he had never touched her. She had always been mine, even when nothing else was.

Now even that was gone.

I didn't cry. I was surprised by how little I wanted to. I just lay there for a long time, hours maybe, watching light shift across the stain on the ceiling, and somewhere in that stillness a decision arrived, not like a storm but like a tide going out — quiet, absolute, impossible to argue with.

I would not die in this house. I would not let him find out what it looked like when I finally broke all the way through.

I would reject him. And then I would leave.

I wrote the words on infirmary paper because it was the only paper within reach. My hand shook doing it, not from fear, but because my body was still recovering from wolfsbane, still weak in a way that made even holding a pen feel like lifting stone. I wrote it the way the old law required — formal, witnessed, unambiguous — because I needed no one to ever question it later. Not Christopher. Not the council. Not myself.

I walked to his office that night on legs that barely held me, one hand against the corridor wall the whole way. The pack house was asleep. Even the omegas who watched me at every turn were gone from the halls, as if the Moon Goddess herself had cleared them out of my path.

His office was dark when I reached it. I let myself in anyway. I set the paper on his desk, squared with the edge, the way I'd once squared invitations and treaty documents for him when I still believed being useful might someday be the same as being loved.

Then I waited.

He came in near midnight, exhaustion carved into his face, and stopped short when he saw me standing in the dark.

"Rosalia. You should be in the infirmary."

"I was." My voice came out steadier than I expected. "I needed to say this to your face."

He frowned, reaching for the lamp, and the light caught the paper on his desk before it caught me. I watched his eyes drop to it. Watched something shift behind them — not yet understanding, just unease, the way a wolf senses a storm before the sky changes color.

"What is this?"

I didn't answer. I only looked at him, at the face that had once made my knees weak with a scent of cedar and smoke, and I felt nothing where that weakness used to live.

"I, Rosalia Hunt," I said, "reject you, Alpha Christopher Tucker, as my mate."

The words left me clean, unornamented, final — and then the world tore.

Pain ripped through my chest like something physical had reached in and pulled. I heard Christopher gasp, saw him buckle against the desk, both of us dropping at the same moment as if some invisible cord between us had been cut with a blade too dull to be merciful. My knees hit the floor. His did too, across the room, his hand clawing at his own chest like he could hold the bond together by force.

Somewhere far below both of us, I heard it — his wolf, howling. Not command. Not fury. Just grief, raw and enormous, the first honest thing that wolf had ever shown me.

I absorbed the pain the way I'd absorbed everything else in that house. I let it move through me and out the other side. Then, while Christopher was still on his knees, still gasping my name like it meant something now that it was too late, I stood.

I did not look back at him.

I walked out of that office and I did not stop.

***

Before dawn, I went to the lower quarters where the pack kept my mother in the small room they called generosity. I packed her medicine, her blanket, the photograph of my father she never let out of her sight. I took my sketchbooks. Nothing else.

By the time the sun rose over Ironveil, there was no trace of us left. No note. No goodbye.

Rosalia Hunt simply stopped existing.
