Chapter 2

Morning light streamed through the windows of the strategists' wing as I approached my office, my steps heavy with the weight of last night's humiliation. Sleep had evaded me, leaving dark circles under my eyes that matched the hollow feeling in my chest. Still, I held my head high. Five years of being Ryan's shadow had taught me to wear a mask of composure, even when breaking inside.

Selene paced restlessly within me. *Focus on work. The SkyTech project needs us.*

But as I reached for my office door, the handle wouldn't turn. Locked. I frowned, trying my key again, then noticed the nameplate beside the door—my nameplate—was gone. In its place hung a shiny new one: "Chloe Anderson, Pack Defense Strategist."

The air left my lungs in a rush. "No," I whispered, pressing my palm against the door as if I could will it to open. "He wouldn't dare."

*He would,* Selene growled. *And he has.*

Through the frosted glass, I could make out the silhouette of someone moving around—in my office, among my files, my life's work. Five years of research and development on the SkyTech Pack Defense System—the integrated security network that had given Shadowpine its territorial advantage—all now apparently handed to a she-wolf who wouldn't know a defense algorithm from a hunting pattern.

"Looking for something?"

I turned to find Marcus, Ryan's Beta, watching me with uncomfortable sympathy in his eyes.

"What is this?" I demanded, gesturing to the nameplate.

Marcus shifted his weight, avoiding my gaze. "Alpha's orders. The SkyTech project has been... reassigned."

"Reassigned," I repeated, the word tasting bitter on my tongue. "To someone who joined the pack three months ago and has zero strategic experience."

"Madison—"

"Where are my files?"

Marcus sighed. "Packed and moved to storage. Chloe will be working from your previous research."

A cold fury washed over me, steadying my trembling hands. This wasn't just about our relationship anymore. This was my work, my contribution to the pack. My legacy.

"Where is he?" I asked, my voice dangerously quiet.

"His private chamber, but—"

I was already moving, Selene's anger propelling me forward with each step. Pack members scattered from my path, sensing the storm brewing within me.

Without knocking, I pushed open the heavy oak door to Ryan's private chamber. He looked up from his desk, unsurprised, as if he'd been waiting for this confrontation.

"You took my project," I stated flatly.

Ryan leaned back in his chair, his expression maddeningly calm. "I reassigned pack resources as needed."

"Resources?" I stepped closer, planting my hands on his desk. "That project is my life's work. My design. My innovation."

"Pack innovation," he corrected smoothly. "Everything you create belongs to Shadowpine. To me."

The possessive glint in his eyes told me this was exactly what he wanted—to remind me of my place, to force me to beg for what was rightfully mine.

"You're punishing me," I realized aloud. "For last night."

"I'm ensuring pack stability," he countered, rising to his feet. "Your emotional outburst at the ceremony was inappropriate and disruptive."

"My emotional outburst?" I laughed incredulously. "You promised to acknowledge our mate bond last night. Instead, you practically offered yourself to another woman."

His jaw tightened, that telltale sign of his control slipping. "I made no such promise for last night specifically. And I certainly didn't appreciate your public display."

"Five years, Ryan," I whispered, pain threading through my anger. "Five years I've waited while you took credit for my work, while I sacrificed everything for you."

Something dangerous flashed in his eyes. "Enough." His voice dropped into the Alpha tone, that supernatural command that forced obedience from pack members. "You will apologize for your behavior, return to your quarters, and wait until I decide what to do with you."

The weight of his command pressed down on me, attempting to bend my will to his. But something unexpected happened—Selene reared up inside me, snarling in defiance, her strength flowing through my veins like liquid silver.

I straightened my spine and met his gaze directly. "No."

Ryan blinked, momentarily stunned by my resistance. "What did you say?"

"I said no." My voice was ice. "I won't apologize. I won't wait for your decision. And I certainly won't watch while you hand my life's work to your new plaything."

His face darkened with rage. "Madison, I command you—"

"Command all you want," I interrupted, turning toward the door. "But understand this: I am done being your shadow."

I walked out, leaving him speechless behind me, Selene's triumph howling through my blood.

---

Night had fallen by the time I returned to my quarters, my decision made. With methodical precision, I packed only what mattered: my personal archives containing copies of my most important research, the silver wolf totem my grandmother had given me for strength, and a single worn strategic quill—my first tool as a pack strategist.

Everything else could stay. I wouldn't need reminders of this place where I'd diminished myself for a man who never truly saw my worth.

Selene was calm now, resolved. *It's time.*

"Yes," I agreed, sealing my bag. "It's time."

I sat at my desk one last time, penning a formal resignation letter. No emotional pleas, no accusations—just the cold, professional severing of ties with the Shadowpine Pack and its Alpha.

Placing the letter on my bedside table where it would be found in the morning, I shouldered my bag and moved to the window. The moon hung heavy in the sky, illuminating the path ahead.

*Where will we go?* Selene asked, though I sensed she already knew the answer.

"Somewhere we'll be valued," I whispered, stepping into the night. "Somewhere we can become who we were always meant to be."

As I slipped away from the only home I'd known for years, a name echoed in my mind: Silvermoon Pack. Ryan's biggest rival—and perhaps, my greatest opportunity.
